Boxes hiding in plain sight

img_0028sThese are the boxes hiding in plain sight – right under the serger table and there is also one under the sewing machine table.  I put projects that I’m going to do in the immediate future in these boxes.   The only problem is they don’t get looked through, hence, the project doesn’t get finished.

Box 1 contained

  1. This valentine heart that I was going to make for my mil, but she didn’t live long enough.img_0030s

  2. Seattle streets quilt started, but not much is done.img_0031s

  3. A dressy shirt with net sleeves.   That won’t happen anytime soon, and wasn’t started, nor was fabric pulled for it.  So I put the magazine back on the book shelf.

  4. A bag with several tiny quilt patterns which go together and make one larger piece.   Fabric and patterns are there.img_0035simg_0039s

5.   32″ square “double stars duo quilt which appears cut out.

img_0034wimg_0038x6

6.  Fabric and pattern for a Lone star quiltimg_0040ss

  1. 7. Extra fabric and pattern for a small wall hanging “Baby Honu”img_0041x

Box 2

This box contained Ziplocs of fabric scraps from quilts made and mostly donated, so no need to keep them separate.  They went into the scrap box which is also overflowing and needs attention. There was one Ziploc I kept separate because I don’t understand how it came to be.  There are many green triangles cut out – obviously for something.   So that box has been eliminated.  I’m saving Box 3 for tomorrow.

Big white trouble with 4 feet

img_0082After the gym this morning, I went across the street for a few more fresh vegetables and some oranges.   This stand was new.   There must be a lot of people who really like it to take this much floor space.  img_0088fBIG WHITE TROUBLE with 4 feet.

Upon getting home, as I came through the gate, Lacey, the one in the rear, darted through it.  Beau had already made his escape.   She dug under the fence, into the garden and out.  Since they were both in the pasture together when I left and DH was  home, I left the gate open until I got back.   Big mistake.   We spent about an hour finding them and convincing them to come home.    It is so much fun to roam the neighborhood and see if any of the neighbors are outside and would give a cookie.   They didn’t realize that neighbors are not out at 11AM in the freezing weather with cookies.  Beau wears a GPS just for these special occasions.   It undoubtedly means the difference between life and death for him as we can find him before he gets to a main road.

img_0095sWe no sooner had them back in the pasture when the serviceman came to install this nice new cooktop.   It is so nice and new, I don’t even want to mess it up by using it.

There wasn’t much sewing time, so I pulled out these lovely pillowcases Mother made and had put away in a  place where she kept things special to her.   It’s too bad she didn’t use them.  I am using some and passing the others on to my children with special instructions to use them and remember their grandmother.   We save many “special to us” things and why?   They won’t be as special to anyone else.    If you are one of the savers, please get your items into your everyday life and enjoy them.    Life does come to an end and no one will enjoy them like you will.

40 year old MOLA

img_0081dThis Mola was gifted to me by an exchange student from Bogota, Columbia more than 40 years ago.   I think because I was unsure what to do –  pillow, hanging or question, I did nothing with it.  Also back then, the green was not a popular color and difficult to match.    How things have changed.   I had this fluffy trim in my studio which goes with it beautifully.  It is 5″ wide so was tricky to put on.  I doubled it and taped it down a bit so that I could sew it.   The Mola part finished at 12 x 17.  With fringe it is 17 x 22.  The little travel pillows JoAnn’s has are 12 x 16, so I inserted one of those.

img_0080The back has an envelope opening.

img_0075sWe also had to include a trip to the vet this morning.   Lacey has been limping for a week, so we thought we should have it checked out.   These two cuties were just leaving.    The vet didn’t find anything wrong, so updated her shots and we came home.

At this point, my song is “Oh, what fun it is to live on a farm today” which I swiped from Jingle Bells.     No photos as we were too busy sorting everything out.   Our swinging property gate is not moving by itself, so we have to get out, open, drive through, get out, close, etc.   DH thought since all the animals were in pastures we could just leave it open while gone.    I  wasn’t convinced that Beau wouldn’t try to get out since we had Lacey with us, so I closed it.   Driving up to the gate, Beau met us, which meant that had I not closed the gate, he could have been miles away.    Driving further, I notice the 8 younger sheep are not in the right place, in fact they are in with a breeding sheep group.   After a good half hour, everyone was back where they belonged, but I’m afraid with what I saw, that we might have a very young mother in 5 months.  One or more of these animals tested a fence that was shut with baling twine, that was well rotted and kindly let the others out.

To add more fun, a neighbor sent an email saying she saw a cougar in another neighbor’s pasture yesterday.   Life can be fun when you are never sure what to expect.

The blocks quilt, a promise kept

img_0062I promised this little blocks quilt last night, that today was its finishing day  I kept my promise and it is finished including the hanging sleeve on the back.  I think it will get to hang either in the living room until I make something else I want to hang there.

img_0027sDH and I have been reading and watching videos that were recommended to us for his symptoms.   We decided to try the juice fasting program for 21 days first to see if we would get any results (we are both doing it).   This was our third day and so far, other than less thinking about what to fix, I haven’t noticed any difference.  But that really isn’t very long, so we will keep at it.   But the carrots in the garden are going at a fast rate.  I may have to buy some for the last week and I had a LOT of carrots in the garden.  I used a quarter of the pumpkin in the morning drink as well.   Who would have thought to eat raw pumpkin other than the sheep.   I will keep you informed if this makes us feel any different.

Tomorrow doesn’t come often

img_0026sTomorrow doesn’t often come, but for this little quilt which has been folded up in a bag for years and then hanging on the board for weeks, tomorrow came.  I quilted and trimmed it today.   Tomorrow, I’ll look and see if I can find any of the fabrics left from this and bind it.    And while I’m at it tomorrow, I will be doing more straightening in the sewing room.

img_0025a

This was a class project and small – only 29″ x 33″ – and since it will be a wall quilt, it doesn’t need a lot of quilting, so I kept it very simple.   Tomorrow, little quilt is your day to be bound washed, and hung.

Mixed up and busy day

It’s been a busy day.  We started out with going to the gym, only this time it was a bit different.  He went out the front door and I went out the back door.   Because my car was not in the garage, but up on the flat in case it snowed, we didn’t see each other start our respective cars, so each was waiting for the other to come out and get in.   We finally connected with our phones.

After the gym, we went to get the apples and almonds, which is at least a 2 hour round trip, then stopped at the grocery for a bit more salad greens.  So it was 2 pm by the time we got home.

After that it was hurry and clean the house for Sabbath.   I guess that’s what I get for playing  sewing for two days.   But I do like the house respectfully clean for the weekend.  I won’t wish for the longer days of summer because life is going by at a rapid race without wishing it to hurry.  I hope each of you has a wonderful and safe weekend.

Baby Honu is almost finished

img_0017s

Baby Honu is finished and ready to hang! – well almost, as it still needs beaded eyes and to be washed.   This pattern is by Lisa Boyer, who gave me just a bit of a push yesterday, saying she hoped I’d  finish it – no pressure.   I purchased it as a kit on Kauai when we were there one rainy day, as it was really difficult to drive by the quilt store and not go in, especially when they have a “husband bench” out front.

img_0019s

I used a very simple pattern to quilt this as I wanted the turtles to shine and also, I had a hard time quilting what looked like waves.

img_0016s

There is now a hanging sleeve and a label on the back.   I did not know Lisa reads my blog and was as surprised to hear from her yesterday as she was to see this quilt on the blog.   She has graciously allowed me to show you her quilts that she made while making the pattern.  Thank you, Lisa.   And of course now, I must make a table runner as that is also very cute.  She said she made a baby blanket of which she doesn’t have a photo.  These are just such cute turtles!  Please go look at her site and see other cute patterns (www.lisaboyer.com)

A wee visitor

img_0015sA wee little visitor and his grandmother came to visit me today on his 11 month birthday.   Mary and I had a marvelous visit as usual, but with Tristan we did not do any sewing or other crafts.  We mostly entertained him for the afternoon – or maybe it was the other way around as he pulls himself up and walks around things now.  I’m going to have to create a “safe zone” for him in the sewing area before we can work there again.

img_0014aI finished freezing all the peppers we picked last week and these crisp, carrots were brought in out of the garden today.   It was 20 degrees when we got up this morning and the weatherman is promising the next 10 days to be freezing – at least during the night.   It is wonderful to have fresh food that will stay in the ground until you need it.

Hono quilt?

img_0013

This “Hono”, meaning turtle, quilt was started many years ago, after a Hawaiian trip.   I purchased the kit there, came home and made it up right away.   Because I didn’t know much about the actual quilting at that time, I sewed all those little stuffed turtles on, then had to take them all back off again so it could be quilted.   So it has hung for all this time waiting and waiting.    “Hono” needs to be done and hung so we can enjoy it and remember the fantastic times we had in Hawaii.   So I put it on the quilting machine, but didn’t like the quilting, then picked the quilting back out.   It is now quilted with a pattern I can live with, and the little turtles have been sewn back on.   It still needs a binding, label, hanging sleeve and little bead eyes for the turtle.   It has taken several years to get this far, but it is closer to being done than it was a month ago.    This is one of those projects that “done is better than perfect”

The list (I really should have hibernated) isn’t finished yet.   Today the (5) electric entrance gate is not functioning.   And the (6) GeekSquad has had control of my computer for the last 4 hours as the printer wasn’t working and since they started a defrag, it could be the rest of tonight.   Maybe this is a new game of “12 days of Christmas”.   If so, we’re halfway through the list.  So shall I get up tomorrow or hibernate?

“Hang on tightly for a wild ride”week

img_0012This week was one to “hang on tightly for a wild ride”  and try to enjoy the ride as the disasters happened.

  1. A shattered cell phone

  2. A broken cooktop

  3. A computer not working

  4. 2 now defunct microwaves

I’m hoping we are at the end of this ride.    The phone has been replaced for a very small fee, courtesy of Apple.    A new cooktop sits here in the entry way awaiting the installer.  The first microwave died after many good years of use.   We went to use it and it was too tired to move.  So we brought in the other one which was given to us several years ago and had seen little use.  It worked for 2 days.  After an on-line search yesterday, I found one to purchase at Amazon – yes it did cost $13.00 more than if I went out and picked one up.  However, it was snowing in the morning and they delivered it in about 6 hours to the front door.   We were willing to pay for that convenience.   And so far it works wonderfully.

The computer was quite another story.   I spent Saturday night and most of yesterday, until midnight, working with the Geeksquad on-line to get it back up and running.  We don’t know why it misbehaved, but after all that time, and 3 different “geeks” on their end, it is up and working again sans my email list of addresses.  Their advice is to get a different email program before it happens again as it has been happened to others as well.

God has blessed us that we are not usually big spenders, grow much of our own food, and only buy necessary clothes, so we had the savings to handle these issues.

img_0009y

Look at this blessing that opened out of season.   There is only one stem, but unexpected and we are enjoying it

Today, we went to exercise, bought grain for the sheep, and took a nap.   Maybe tomorrow, we can get back on track.   It’s time again to clean surfaces that attract “stuff”
