“Tell it to the Stars” quilt top + garden

This is the finished “Tell it to the Stars” quilt top.   It took parts of three days to assemble it, but it turned out to be a nice masculine quilt top.   It has a green edge all around it, which is difficult to see because my quilt wall is a bit small.

And these are the garden boots and shoes I could not get a colored photo to show you yesterday.  I did want you to see how pretty they are BEFORE the mud season.

So after finishing the quilt top, I went outside to pick food.   Here is the first thing I saw.   Yes, this bantam outwitted us and has two small chicks.

So back to picking veggies.   5 cantaloupes – personal size

P1020271 todays personal cants

2 gallon bucket of tomatoes

 P1020270 more tomatoes

and more tomatoes

 P1020268 tomatoes

and a few beets

 P1020269 beets

two gallons of green beans

 P1020267 2 gallon green beans

about 2 quarts of raspberries

 P1020265 2 qts raspberries

and not shown about 40 pounds of apples.    We will pick more in 2 weeks or sooner.  It was a full day.

Shoes and canning

I did sew this morning, but nothing really to show yet.

The doctor ordered new shoes, so that was the first order of business when the stores opened.   New Balance, they are.

Then it was off to the hardware store and Costco.    When I can get the camera to take color again, I’ll show you the new garden boots and shoes.     Costco was more expensive trip.   They have really changed things around since we were there three weeks ago and now near the entrance, have an organic section with many gluten-free selections.   In case you missed them there, they are also in the regular section.   We were like kids in a candy store.

Then home to face a mass of tomatoes.   Fortunately there are still about 5 gallons that are not ripe enough to process.    But I did make and process 22 pints of salsa.   Since we use about a pint a week, I’ll get some more green peppers and onions and do about that many more.   The rest of this years tomatoes will just be sauce and canned as is.  I do write the products and date on the lid so we have some idea of age and product.

SEAHAWKS DAY (not winners) and cantaloupe

I didn’t know if  cantaloupe would grow in this area or not, but since the summer was so warm, I thought I’d give it a try.   They were late getting into the ground and didn’t get the fertilizer attention needed, but there are quite a few of these little ones.  I would call them personal size.   This is a teaspoon sitting beside it.  We picked 4 of them today.   Well, picked isn’t the best word, because they had already disengaged from the plant.  We simply picked them up.

The one we opened today was a bit overripe, but we enjoyed it anyway.   Tomorrow we’ll try another one.

Seahawk’s day is almost like a national holiday around here this year.   And all because they had a great year last .  We were invited to our oldest son’s new place and I took my knitting.   I am now nearly up to the heel.

And I had some time this morning to put the quilt blocks in some sort of order.  So here you see a very rough idea of “Tell it to the Stars”

Relaxing

Today we drove over to a friend’s house to give her some jars of jam for her birthday.   Then we drove into Seattle for a lovely, relaxing. visit with our youngest daughter and her husband.     We had a delightful lunch and then settled on towels beside the lake to visit, relax, and take in some of the last really warm summer rays.  We need enough summer memories to get us through February and March when it seems summer is still a long way off.   The lake has all ready chilled a bit as the weather is changing.

Learning and trying

Thank you Lois and Darlene for your recipes.   I will try them soon.   I feel like a stranger in a foreign country with this new way of eating.   I had no idea we were consuming that much wheat and at first thought it would be no big deal.   HA!

Today I got out the package of Organic multigrain bread mix that I found at the store this week..   The ingredients are all organic and include:  brown rice flour, sorghum flour, tapioca starch, quinoa flour, evap cane juice, xantham gum, yeast, and salt.    ‘

Here it is nearly risen.

and after it came out of the oven

P1020230 GF out of oven

This is how a slice looks

P1020233 GF bread sliced

Notice how dense it is.   It holds together quite good and slices easily.   It is edible with something on it.   I think it will be okay for sandwiches thinly sliced, if the real thing isn’t around..    But it is NOT bread, nor does it taste like it.   Still I am thankful we have food to eat.

I also tried this mix using the biscuit recipe on the package

P1020226 GF sjhortcake

This accidentally is not organic.   The ingredients are brown rice flour, non aluminum baking soda, non GMO cornstarch, vanilla bean powder, sea salt, baking soda, xantham gum.     Although this baked up fairly good, because it is not organic, I will try to come up with something similar from scratch.

P1020228 vegan GF strawberry shortcake

with the strawberries and the “ice cream” (not real) we nearly fooled ourselves and it was a very pleasant treat.

I also made a batch of strawberry jam for a gift.

Gluten-free Sept 11

Breakfast – only had time for our smoothies and supplements

Lunch:  We tried a new patty we found called Sunshine Garden Herb which consists of brown rice, sunflower seed, carrots spices, and sea salt.   They were a bit bland for us so won’t buy them again.  With that we had Quinoa cooked in vegetable broth, broccoli, cabbage/lettuce salad and hummus (on the quinoa.   So we did better today

Dinner was another fruit smoothie and some vegan “ice cream”

I also signed up for a gluten free baking class on Craftsy.   I feel so lost in this world.

An ordinary day?

Maybe, that is if there is such a thing, this was almost ordinary.   I had a doctor’s appointment early this morning for a curling toenail.   Somehow, between being early, the visit, the x-ray to make sure there were no spurs, and then going back to the doctor to make an appointment to have him remove the nail temporarily, we used up 2.5 hours.    That was bad enough, but to make things really interesting, I managed to forget to turn off the lights when we arrived.    It was just getting light when I left home, and very much daylight when I arrived there.    So the next nearly two hours was spent relaxing while we waited for AAA to come with jumper cables.   By the time we arrived home, it was noon and time to do the lunch tasks.

A new pair of socks and some weeding

This pair is all wool, so they will need to be hand washed.

P1020215 socks

The wool is some of my oldest and I purchased it in Australia about 14 years ago.   As you can see by the label it says it was on sale for 1.19.   At that time one American dollar was worth two Australian dollars.

P1020216 sock label

Between knitting and other chores, I did take a look at the garden which has so outrun me.

P1020214 weeds

And I did actually get most of this side weeded.  Maybe after my appointment in the morning, I’ll be up to more, but since I’m having a toe worked on, I may have to just sit and baby my foot.    What do you think?
