Pompeii

IMG_1887

Today’s activity was to visit the Pompeii display downtown Seattle.IMG_1890

Pompeii was an ancient Italian city of 25,000,near Naples and  the sea, which was destroyed when Mt Vesuvius, a volcano, erupted in AD 79,  killing 20oo people and burying the city.   I was  intrigued by the “moderness” that was depicted.   I think of the first century as very poor and villages like we often see in Bible pictures.   Pompeii was not that  way.   In fact, in many ways, it looked like it just walked out of the last century.  It was the seaport where the wealthy went to live and relax.

IMG_1893 Because the city was a mix of Roman and Greece cultures and architectures, they often had gods from both in their homes.   These gods were given daily sacrifices mostly of food.   This is a Mediterranean area and the people still eat the same as they did…many fruits and vegetables and some meats.    Pompeii was known for its fish sauce.IMG_1927 The courtyards were large and livable.   They often would pull their couches out there in the evening and enjoy the cool air.   This basin was set to catch rainwater and pipe it underground.   They had extensive water systems to meet their needs.

IMG_1928

Because money was not an issue, their walls were decorated with frescos and boards like this

IMG_1930

Each little tile in this is about the size of the end of my pinkie.

IMG_1929

Marble was an easily acquired item, so was used extensively for floors, walls, and tabletops.

IMG_1934

The town square was actually a long rectangle with stores, a gym, medical places and any other necessary buildings.   It was also a meeting place and city business was conducted there.    The “gym” was much like ours with men and women’s dressing areas, exercise area, swimming pool, saunas, massages, baths, and a cooling bath with which to end.     They were a bit different because slaves bathed them and gave them massages.

IMG_1935

Doesn’t this look like an ordinary kid today?   This is a bust of Gaius Caesar at the age of 10.

IMG_1936

Gladiators provided entertainment and this is one of the preserved hats.

IMG_1937

I enjoyed these clay pots and bowls because we still use these types of things.

IMG_1938

As for medicine, I’m not sure we have advanced a whole lot.   Here we have a tweezers, scales, and a square.

IMG_1939

When the mountain of fire and ashes descended on the city, the bodies were “frozen in time”.    So when uncovered, plaster could be poured into the molds made by the lava and ash and used to recreate these bodies.   They are so complete that one can tell the type of shoes they wore.  Pliny was a survivor and 18 years old at the time.  He watched from a distance what happened and later wrote his memories of that time.    Pliny – I have added a link for you to read.   Just double-click on red.

IMG_1940

And I guess because we have the volcanic mountains within 50 miles of us, the curators didn’t want us to get to complacent, so they added this poster and had a display of emergency supplies and a back pack.   However, the emergencies supplies would be handy no matter what the emergency – even a hurricane or fire.

Crocheting and shepherding

IMG_1860

After achieving a 26″ square, I decided that I didn’t like how it looked,IMG_1877

so now it looks like this.

IMG_1880

The grass outside the pasture is growing very fast, so instead of mowing it, we have decided  to be on hand to watch the sheep do the mowing.   Yes, it takes longer, because one has to be watching them so they don’t get into landscaping.  But they are so very good about going back into their area.  Well, it does look as though one is headed the wrong way, but they like to stay together so they all went in.

Irish meadows

IMG_1869

It seemed like a great day – sunny and cool for eating at our favorite Mexican restaurant – The Rio Blanco – a nice little family owned restaurant.   Bill had a vegetable burrito wrapped in corn tortillas plus rice while I had an avocado vegetable tostada.   We really enjoyed it.   Then we came home so I could finish this top.

IMG_1873

I wasn’t sure how I’d like this, but I do like all these greens in a random mixture.   So it will get quilted and bound and given.   I have used a good share of my green scraps now (I hope).    I found that some of the other drawers in that little drawer stack have other colors, so there will be other striped quilts coming up.   I like them as they always seem so cheerful.

It seems the quilt tops are stacking up a bit faster than the finished ones, so may have to switch jobs for awhile.

Surprises keep coming

IMG_1861

It’s hard to believe that these green stripes have been evading me.   They are scraps from several years ago and I don’t even remember the original intention – hopefully this was it.   However, I opened a small drawer to put something in and these begged to come out.   They are now a new  quilt top just waiting to be quilted.  It measures 41 x 48. I really don’t know what is about these greens as green has never been my favorite color, but I do like it for quilts.

IMG_1863

I also worked at moving a box in the hoop house.  We have to move it over about 18″.   So I’ve been clearing where the new side of the box is to be – digging the dirt from the left side, tossing it onto the right side.   The post on the right side will eventually be in the middle.   I still have a couple weeks before planting the tomatoes so I’m okay.

 IMG_1865

And here is the point from where Lacey enjoys watching the most.   No one can come or go without her watchful eye.    However, usually she must be in the pasture with the animals.  (The alpacas were allowed out to eat weeds today, so she was able to watch from here.)

Little green crochet blanket

IMG_1860

This has really been fun.   It goes quickly, is pretty, and has been a good piece to practice skills.  At this point I am about half done.

More green squares

IMG_1855

There are now 10 green squares consisting of 25   squares in each.  All of these have been out of remnants from other projects.  I haven’t decided if I want to put anything between them, or just sew them all together for one big patch.   Any suggestions?

Some of today was spent outside, taking inventory of what needs to be done.  Then daughter, Jen, came to visit with her two sons and DH.   We had a great visit.

Mt Rainier

IMG_1768

Since it was sunny, we arranged to go for a walk in the park this afternoon, but it was cold and windy, so we (our daughter, her DH, Bill and I) decided to go for a drive to the east side of Mt Rainier instead to Chinook Pass   I can’t even begin to show you the beauty we enjoyed on this mini trip.   So instead of talking, I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves.

Crochet (after housework)

IMG_1755After we spent the morning doing housework, it was time for a break.   Mary came over, which is always a treat, and had lunch with us.    Afterward I brought out the yarn.   We could not find the pattern for the blanket I wanted to make, but Mary remembered how it went.   So she started this blanket and we both worked on it.

IMG_1758

Of course, the yarn had a fit and didn’t want to come out to play nicely, so while I worked on the blanket, Mary rolled this lovely new ball from which to work.   It is a beautiful Paton baby color and I think the baby’s mother will enjoy using it.

IMG_1759

Bill (DH) even joined the party by crocheting on a purple baby hat.     So now we have a much cleaner abode and fun projects started.

More green blocks

IMG_1748Today I accomplished 3 more green blocks.   I’m still deciding whether I want to  separate them or not.

IMG_1747

I find that making sure the seams all go the correct way on the back to be the most challenging part of these blocks.

Food!

Have you ever thought about how much time we spend on food?   Now if we could just eliminate that little detail, we’d have more time for other things.   This morning we went to the grocery store, came home and put all those items away………..after, I washed all the fresh food, made about 4 gallons of fresh salad, which will only last a week.  I was so hungry for fresh greens.   Then it was lunch time and we ate.

IMG_1745 Someday, I want to move, so I’ve evaluated what would be the most difficult in my sewing studio to keep straight in a move.   All these bits and pieces would.   So this afternoon, I sewed many strips together and then cut them with the above June Taylor ruler.

IMG_1744

It has nice slits to guide the rotary cutter.   So after the pieces were 5 strips wide, I just put this ruler on them and cut away.

IMG_1746

Then I started assembly, which is going to take a few days.   The strips are only two wide at this time.
