Tomato and other plants

These tomato plants have been in for three weeks and are doing very good, so today I planted some tiny little sauce tomatoes that are barely up, but it’s now or it won’t happen.   Tomorrow I will try to get some more peppers in.   The peas, onion, garlic and cauliflower are doing good.  The kale is ahead of me.

I took out most of the winter broccoli to make room for something new.   I picked a large amount of kale.   It is amazing – first you plant and water and fertilize, then you get to wash and process the food.  This all seems to take so much time.    Grocery store food is CHEAP.   But what we grow is better.

When I got to the fairgrounds there were still many unsold fleeces to be picked up.

I was happy as half of mine sold.  The fleece that went with this rosette was sold.  Though I know this day had 24 hours, like every other day it seems it has  been a long day.

Shopping

Shopping was my word for today.   Beau went with me to get the sheep grain.   I didn’t think ahead or I would have left him home.  He usually lays down in the back of the wagon, but when these bags of grain were loaded, he had a difficult time as they are bagged in that slippery plastic paper.   At first he slid around a lot and then he found a place for each of his 4 feet straddling the bags and planted himself.   He probably won’t want to go next time.

For lunch I made tabouleh with some of the parsley I picked yesterday.   I then made falafel patties to go with it, which made a great lunch and there is enough for another meal.

Then off shopping again.   We signed up at a new gym, and shopped Costco, Fred Meyers, and Office Depot.   We came home shopped out.

Cooking/gardening day

My cooking/gardening day began in the kitchen.  I found another 10 jars of pear sauce to turn into pear butter since we eat the one, but not the other.   So I filled the slow cooker with the sauce and will cook it down to a bit less than 1/2 what it is now.    Then I went out to the hoop house.  The weeds have started growing again with this warmer weather as well as the plants.   So I spent time removing them and picking produce, I pulled the rest of the Brussels sprouts which were starting to flower.   I picked then pulled out half of the winter broccoli which is basically done.   The winter cabbage is still there along with half the broccoli plants.

I washed and stemmed the parsley.   When I was done I had these 2 full gallon bags of parsley ready to use.   I washed, cooked, and froze the broccoli.   Winter broccoli is very different from spring  broccoli in that it doesn’t have the nice big clusters, but rather many shoots with buds which are very tender.  So between weeds, harvest, and cleaning, I filled the day.   It seems to take as long to prepare some of these foods as it does to plant and water them.

Amos and Andy arrived

Amos (dark) and Andy arrived in this world while I was bottle feeding thee three that started the birthing event this year.  Most of these lambs have a dark daddy and a white mother.  And they are pretty well split between the dark and the white.

We had company share lunch with us today.  I made a lasagna using foods from the freezer, which were tomatoes, zucchini and Swiss chard.  It was delicious.   I’m working hard on my goal of using all the foods in at least one of the two freezers before we start putting food in for the next winter.  We start with strawberries, so we will need some foods in the second freezer to carry us through until the bulk of the seasonal produce that we freeze gets ripe.  But it would be nice to start the winter with totally new foods in the freezer.

It was suggested to me tonight that if I wanted to be inspired to lose some weight, I should watch a Netflix film “Obesity – the post-mortem”   It was an interesting film, but takes a strong stomach.

Moving day

These two have learned to pull things down and drag them around, so it is definitely Moving Day.    They were also trying to jump onto the couch. They were moved to the barn.  They have their kennel in a heated room for the nights. as I was afraid moving them from the house to really cold might be a bit of a shock when the nights are below freezing.  But in a couple days they will have acclimated and after Saturday, we are supposed to have a week of above freezing nights.   They will become real sheep and learn the ways of their kind.  And I will get the toys picked up and clean the floors less frequently.  Plus today was vaccination day and it was easier for them, to all be together.  I will still be taking bottles up for them 5 times a day so we will have a lot of interaction.

When you need a boost , it’s very handy to have mom resting nearby.

There! – With mom’s help, she made it into the feeder.

My next step is to try to figure out how to get some of these cute videos onto this page.  Apparently I am very limited as to size, so will work on that to give you more entertainment in the future.   One can spend a lot of time enjoying them.

As for the people who live here.  Today, we had our general blood work done.  When we came home, the friend that was here visiting yesterday stopped by with the most delicious loaf of home-made sour dough bread which we willingly accepted and is now half eaten.  It is wonderful to have friends share with you especially when you have added responsibilities.

Juliette won!

Today, DH felt a real need to go to Costco, because we hadn’t been there this year yet and this Parkinson stuff makes him worry even more than before.  So while he was putting on his shoes, I started out to the car.   You don’t have to guess who bolted past me and past him, going from one end of the house to the other, with a pause in each room as if looking for something.   Juliette won!   She toured the entire floor (without mishap) before I could get her turned around with animal crackers.   Then out the back door and up to  where the other sheep are, she followed.   She is now a sheep again, in the pasture with the other sheep.  Grain does wonders.

And we did our damage at Costco.   It is amazing how much one can spend without buying much food.   We did buy raisins and figs, and some dog treats.   The bulk of our buying was things like toilet paper, dishwasher soap, jeans, etc. and it added up fast.     I was glad I had made mashed potatoes, with falafel patties and green beans to fill up before we went to a grocery store.  It does save money.

A shopping experience

Today was sunny, so I forced myself to go to the mall which is half an hour away.    Why do I have to force myself to go where I once loved to go.  I think it has to do with the traffic –  both cars and people, plus I don’t need many things.  I had to return 3 items of clothing that didn’t fit DH.   The Nordstrom’s experience was absolutely delightful – the clerk there was so very kind and helpful.   I will not darken the doorway of JCrew again.  Maybe these clerks just see too many unpleasant people, or maybe they don’t care about their jobs.  A shopping experience like today makes me think about how I treat people with whom I come in contact, because like them, I represent Someone.

I finished processing the split pea soup and I will be contacting Amazon on that.  I just purchased a number of boxes of jar lids and had a 20% sealing rate.  I popped all that didn’t seal into the freezer, so they are not wasted, but I think I may have encountered a bad lot of lids.

I managed to land sitting on the floor a couple days ago, rather unexpectedly, so I also worked a trip to the chiropractor into my day.  What is it about an adjustment that demands a rest?   Does it affect any of you that way?

The sewing didn’t happen and as the day was just not long enough to include it.   But the laundry is done and the floors are swept..   Tomorrow is gym and a physical.

Did I mention that we did pregnancy checks on the sheep yesterday and we are looking at the first of February for lambing, which is good.   I can sneak a few more things into this month before then.

And because I like to end positively, the closet shelves in my closet are now put up properly (when I originally put them up, I used molly screws instead of finding the joists) and the underground propane tank has been approved by the city, so we can now move forward on that.    Life is good.

See  you tomorrow.

Split pea soup

Somehow I didn’t get a photo, but we made two batch of split pea soup.   We canned 24 pints and the rest will happen in the morning. DH enjoys this EVERY evening for dinner.

Some days, I run out of energy.   Maybe because I spent time in the barn changing sheep coats and cleaning out a stall that I left too long, so it was deeper than I like.   Tomorrow after I get back, I have more stall cleaning to do.  If I was really, REALLY smart, I would pick up the dropped hay weekly and then it wouldn’t have a chance to mat so badly and would not be such a workout.

I did a minor amount of work on these brown flying geese.   I think these geese will take all week, because tomorrow I have to go up to the mall and return some items.   I keep putting this trip off.   Shopping is not a high priority anymore.  But eventually they will get done.

Merry Christmas 2017

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2017

Yes, it snowed just under 3″   It is the 6th snowy Christmas since they have been keeping records here in the Seattle area.

This 2/3 yard of sparkly fabric insisted on coming home with me when I stopped at JoAnns for some rotary cutter blades.   And for 1.50, I couldn’t refuse.  Now, I’ll be on the look out for the perfect use.

This is called “portion control” or maybe, I should just say, they were so late for lunch, they thought we’d already eaten so stopped to eat before coming, and therefore weren’t hungry when they arrived.

This is what the tag might look like when you don’t have tags, but you do have an embroidery machine and some felt.  Truly we had a wonderful Christmas.  We took a group self photo of the family by setting the camera and the operator, ran to get into the photo on time.   This is the first time we’ve had the entire family together at one place and one time since they started leaving home.  However, you will have to wait a day or two for that because I have to wait for him to upload to his computer and then send it to me.  But I will share it with you.   We were so busy visiting with each other, that photos in general didn’t happen.

Tomorrow life starts again, with the annual recapping, and getting ideas ready for the next 12 months.

And now “to all a good night”

Recipe and taxes

I tried this new recipe today https://www.connoisseurusveg.com/vegan-mac-and-cheese/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=classic_vegan_mac_and_cheese_my_tips_for_making_amazing_vegan_mac_and_cheese&utm_term=2017-12-20   It was absolutely delicious!.   If you don’t use dairy and want a nice creamy cheese for pasta, this is a keeper. (I was out of macaroni so used these noodles).   I’d like to put it on everything I make for awhile, it is so good.

Then I worked some more of the tax material.   Lambs start coming mid January, and taxes just get in the way, so I like to have as much as possible out of the way, or at least organized in Quicken.   I’m behind this year, because other things popped into my life.

Between taxes, I did finish part 1 “On Ringo Lake”.   Part 2 is 200 Flying geese, so that will take a bit longer.  Now until Friday, I’m only 3 parts behind, which feels like I’m catching up.
