New arrival, blueberries

Here is our new arrival, still wet, and having her first meal.  We thought McKenzie and the other Shetlands were all bred earlier, so were not concerned and put all the ewes together with our Cormo herdsire.   Dumb idea which won’t happen again.   This was a bit of a surprise as we thought we were done.   And again, we think we are done.

These are the blueberry bushes that I am becoming very acquainted with.   See on the right how the berries will ripen 2-4 at a time/place.   So the same bushes are picked over and over again.  It seems slow as I only get about 5# or l gallon an hour.   However, I now have 50# in the freezer.  We love blueberries in various ways during the winter.

My design wall is not as big as needed for this flimsy.  I have finished and the border you see on the bottom is all the way around.   Next, I will pick out the backing and get it on the quilting machine where I will look at it for 2 weeks and then decide I need to get it done right away.   And the frenzy will begin, but it will get quilted and bound in time for gifting.

And in between the other fun stuff on this farm,  with this heat, we are fighting fly strike, which is no fun for humans or animals.

Interesting email

This is not yet pressed, but it is together and when I have time, I will put borders on it.   The finished size will be 70 x 80.  Getting all those stars to come together properly took good pinning.

Interesting email  with your laugh for today

Hunter star update 7/10

Hunter Star update 7/10

The piecing is done and it is ready to have the rows sewn together.  The trickiest part is getting those little stars to meet properly.   So I’ll grab a few minutes in the morning before it gets warm enough to pick blueberries and get started.

Surprise vacation

I was given a surprise vacation this week.   Wordpress updated automatically and a number of us have not been able to get into our blogs and websites.   I have spent hours upon hours this week.   I am tiptoeing in here, because things aren’t quite right yet

At any rate, I hope you had a marvelous Independence day, whether Canadian or American.  This usually indicated summer as officially here in the Pacific Northwest, although it was early this year.

As you can see from the above photo, I haven’t made much quilting progress.  Maybe tomorrow, my machine will be ready to come home.  If so, I can pick it up when we get the hearing aids fitted and ordered.

Most of the sheep have fresh coats on now and will move Sunday to a new field of weeds.

We have been picking and eating blueberries and other foods from the garden, and most of all, we have been watering and watering and watering.

So my plan is to be back to blogging again on Sunday to fill you in on life on a mini farm near the city.

Putting pieces together – Hunter Star

Putting pieces together  – Hunter Star

Using the above two blocks, I am making one block.
Which becomes one quarter of this block
Here there are two sewn together and you see the flower starting to develop.   I am ready for this step with all the blocks now.
Then I will be creating rows like this and
pressing the seam between blocks open, so the middle of the flowers won’t be bulky.

Last week

Last week was spent in the car.  Somehow we managed to put 6 appointments into one week.   There were eye exams, hearing tests and doctor (on different days) as well as the second stem cell treatment and a chiropractor visit.    I’m going to be careful to not let that happen again – at least not in the near future.   That is all that I got done.   So today, I took the day and sewed and sewed and sewed.   What luxury!  I really hope this week will be a normal week.  Normal is good.

Warm weather and appointments

16 block hunter star

We are getting warm weather!   Summer has come and I really want to enjoy it.   Plus we have 3 days of appointments this week, so I am planning to take the week off and enjoy it.   If something comes up that I think you’ll enjoy, I’ll pop on my computer and share, but mostly it looks like we will be in the car a lot, driving to appointments.

Hunter Star:   I now have 25 of the 150 blocks I need for the quilt.

Hunter star block

This is the a picture of the beautiful block from which I am making a quilt.   It looks very complicated, but watch as I step through these steps.

Sew the piece to each side of the middle piece and press.   Take note that you do not do the following:

It is very tempting to match the sides and that’s not going to work.  So when you have them like the bottom piece, press and addthe top triangle.   There are only the 4 pieces.   Now reverse those colors to make the other half of this blockMake 4 of these simple blocks and you have a very complicated looking quilt piece.    It is assembled in rows.    Because it is summer, mine will be on the back burner a lot of the time, but it is really quite easy and I’d love to see in what colors you will make yours

Weed whacking, phone

Did  you know that you need to periodically clean out the little hole where you plug into your smart phone.   I didn’t which caused me a trip to AT&T to find out why it wasn’t charging.   It had too much dust and dirt to connect.

I am feeling hemmed in by the weeds which have grown as tall as the flowers, so today, the weed whacker and I spent some time together.   But it is so overwhelming and really very difficult to find help.

And because today the computer is somewhat behaving, here is a photo of the green and cream colors that I cut for the quilt, plus the picture of 4 blocks put together.

Other than that, I cleaned a stall in the barn and worked on more lamb halter training.   They do not like those lessons.

Stack and Flip quilt finished

The Stack and flip quilt designed by Missouri quilts is finished.  I used a most of a 2.5″ roll.   It languished for over a month while spring chores took my time.   It measures 57 x 74″ which is a good nap size.   Since I wanted it to feel nice and airy, I used these clouds to give it that feel.   The backing has some pretty flowers which also make it a happy quilt.

Farm life is busy

eseDH went to the gym alone this morning.  Beau wanted to go for a car ride, but settled for a good brushing and a treatWhen we were through, this office waste basket was full of discarded dog fur and he was happy with his treat of string cheese.   And I bet he feels a lot better in this warm weather.

Even mini farm life is busy, and especially so with this beautiful weather we have had.  There is always so much to do.   And the dogs don’t get brushed often.   There are the lambs that need to be halter trained and the stalls that each need cleaning at least twice a week if I want to keep the work doable for me.  There is the fencing, and the weeds, thistles, nettles and most of all, we need a garden, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, and an herb garden in addition to the hoop house we have.   This year we are moving the garden that has been on the hillside up to a flat area, so that means creating new beds.  There are hanging baskets to water and flower bed weeding to do.

These are all extras in addition to the normal feeding and household duties.  I have accepted that I cannot do it all without help.

So today, I hired two young men to layout the new garden beds and plant somewhere around 300 potato starts and one hundred onion bulbs.   It feels so good to have them in the ground now.  Sometime in the next the two weeks, we will plant corn, green beans, and squashes in the rest of this area.  They will return to help with the nettle, thistles and weeds on the fence line

While they were doing the new garden area, I was able to get the tomatoes tied up as well as weeding in the hoop house.  It should have been done 2-3 weeks ago, but it is done, and now, I need to keep up with it.   Already the kale is getting out of control.   I picked the parsley and it is time again to pick the peapods and once again, I managed to plant more lettuce than we can eat.  But neighbors, chickens, and sheep are always willing to help. These are called Egyptian walking onions.   The little white bulb lets on the end bend down and plant themselves into the soil, thus reseeding themselves over and over.   They are a hot onion, so I use them in cooking.
