Daffodil flimsy and produce

IMG_4722I really need a better background to hang these larger quilts, but until then, I’ll make do with this.   Here is the finished flimsy.   The pattern is called “Summer’s Promise” by Ann Lauer.   The instructions are excellent.  I found it in the American Quilter magazine dated May 2016.   It does a good job of showing off the focus fabric.   In this case, I had the daffodil fabric hanging on the wall, just waiting for the right pattern.

IMG_4720This afternoon’s harvest was three lovely heads of broccoli.   I had planned to pick berries and lavender, but after fertilizing the hoop house and getting it water, the heaven’s opened and it poured.   So maybe I can pick berries tomorrow as there is only a 30% chance of rain.  And that will give me a break from the housework from which I am way behind.

Why we test quilts

IMG_4708

There is no pay for testing quilts and often it isn’t a pattern I would have chosen.   I am testing this one, because the other testers were avoiding it.   However, it really needed to be tested before being published as there were a few errors that might make it become a ufo for someone.  I can’t show  you the quilt until September, but here is a section of the border.  One of the pieces was not quite long enough – so that will be a correction in the pattern.   Also I tried different methods of putting it together and decided one really needs to make a template for each half of the block to trim it before putting it together. It’s a pretty border, but also a more advanced one as there are 5 pieces to match in each half of the chevron.

Yes there are places it doesn’t match perfectly.   Since testers are to follow the instructions, some of the pieces are too short and I tried to make it work anyhow.   Some of the other mismatches are due to my imperfect sewing.

Daffodils revisited

IMG_4667At last I was able to work on this daffodil quilt again.   I love the colors!   My goal is to get the top done this week.

IMG_4664

2 quarts of strawberries picked last night are tonight’s treat.

IMG_4665

This is the most beautiful kale I have grown.  Not an insect bite anywhere on any leaf.   They just looked so perfect.  You’ll notice that I picked a huge bowl (fits on the lawn chair).   I washed and froze it and it will crumble beautifully after frozen, so it takes very little room.   Then it will be available for many dishes this winter.

A Reason to Launder

IMG_4648

Here is the reason that I launder each quilt that I make before it leaves the house.   I would hate to have recipient get a quilt and then have problems.    These quilt squares were made from fabrics that were already squares which makes them difficult to preshrink, so that didn’t happen.   IMG_4650

They frayed more than a quarter inch in places.   I’m not sure if this was because of the fabric shrinking or if they were just fabrics that fray a lot.   I have made more than a hundred quilts and never had this happen.IMG_4651

So I pulled the fabric back  under and hand sewed the various places that came apart.   Next week sometime, I will go back over all the seams where the square meets the yellow as that is the place they pulled apart, using a several step zigzag.   That should hold them.   I just didn’t have time to do it today.   (there was more work outside to be done)

As far as the blog is concerned, the quilt is finished, but I want to make absolutely certain no one else gets a bad surprise.

Churn dash revisited

IMG_4646It is quilted now and ready for binding.   I’m really hoping to finish this tomorrow as well as transplant tomatoes and get some laundry done.   Then there are  meals to make for the weekend.   Why do these other things get in the way?   I guess it’s all a matter of priorities.

Pattern testing

IMG_4613

I won’t be able to show you the quilt until September, but this is a part of a pattern I am testing.  Or is it testing my skills?   These still need a good pressing.

IMG_4611

And just to make a bit more room, these 2 boxes of books which were consuming 2 book shelves are on their way out the door.   There is no use storing cookbooks when one is mostly cooking by what pops into the head or sounds interesting on the internet.   So the books will go to someone who will be happy to  go through them and look at them.  Now I can actually put all the other books in that room on shelves.

Daffodil progress

IMG_4604

There are many small pieces to add to the few larger pieces in this quilt. So I’d like to show you how it goes together.

IMG_4599Do you see these units?

IMG_4601

Then they are sewn together like this and a border is put on each side.   I know it looks like it is wrinkled, but that is actually the design in the fabric.

IMG_4602

Then there are different triangles in the border that goes around the quilt.   I really like how it makes the daffodils stand out.

IMG_4598

We are having a nice mix of hot, rain, and clouds.   Tomorrow, forecast to be cloudy, will be a great day get back into the gardens, especially since rain is forecast for the weekend.

A new quilt starts

IMG_4594These are the big pieces of the new Daffodil quilt.   There are many small pieces that will fill in between the major pieces.   Today I cut it out and barely started sewing as you can see.

On days when they forage the other side of the road and around the house, this is what they do 5 minutes before feeding time.   They mill around and look through the sliding glass doors to let me know the time.

Here is my 90-year young aunt showing off her birthday quilt.   She was so delighted, I was happy to have made it for her.

It seems I can go hard for 2-3 days and then I need a slower day – is that normal?

The circus is ready to start!

IMG_4583

I can’t believe this is finished and ready to put in my charity pile.   That makes me so happy.
