Fencing, stall walls, some embroidery

Fencing:IMG_0104d

Today was a supervising and “go for” day.   I had two young men show up to help me which was terrific as I could use the help, one for fencing and one to work in the barn.   Here is a photo of the perimeter fence that should be completed soon.   It is a work of art.   As you can see, it is nice and straight and the angle and corner posts are sunk in concrete.  However, while he was working on this, Lacey thought she should check and see how secure the existing fence is.   She found that the chain link side which we share with neighbors had no hot wire – just fencing.   She worked at getting under that until she succeeded.   Therefore added to our day was going after more hot wire and insulators and getting them installed.  Apparently keeping the sheep safe is not a big enough job for her.   All of our perimeter fencing will be hot.

A lot of the added pasture is open and will support a good number of sheep during the summer.  Cross fencing will happen later as needed.  The building about mid photo, is our house across the pasture.

Stall walls:

The other young man worked inside the barn, cutting and putting up the stall walls.   As you can see there was a run to the store for lumber which will be the doors.  I am so pleased that we were able to accomplish this much today.  Next weekend, I’m hoping he will come, make the doors, and hang them.

After all of this was accomplished, I was able to come in and work in the studio for a couple hours.  These blocks will eventually be the centers of a churn dash quilt.

And I promised the church I’d try to get at least one quilt done to help with the homeless men that try to stay a bit warmer up next to the church doors.  Hopefully tomorrow, after gym, I’ll get to work on that project.   I understand there are several men who could each use a quilt, but I am only one person, so do what I can.

Snow, snow, snow; little sewing

IMG_0081IMG_0084IMG_0085Snow is rare in the Pacific Northwest

And when we got up, there was 7.5″ of it!  So we made our way through it to feed the livestock while thinking what a challenge this must be for those in areas where snow is common.  While we gingerly picked our way through it, these two thought we had bought them a whole new playground.  As the internet was down, we watched snow.

I did get this put together, although, I still need to cut all the threads between the words and finish off the back.

I have misplaced a piece of fabric and a project that I wanted to get to the flimsy state this month.   I have looked where I KNEW they were and they have gotten up and changed places.   So tomorrow, there may be a big hunt.

Busy day, not much to show

img_5654dWe had a busy day, but mostly running around to the gym, to the chiropractor, and two stores.   No we did not purchase anything, and yes, my back is better.    But that didn’t leave as much time as I would have liked for sewing.   I wanted to finish this flimsy, but that will wait.   I have one more row and then borders.  I’m thinking I want to put something in the border corners, but that hasn’t come to me yet.

Last night I was looking through my 2014 goals for knitting, sewing, etc.   I did not make one quilt on that list.  However, in 2013, I achieved 10 out of the 12.   I think much of my quilt problem is like the one above.  I catch an idea from someone/somewhere and it soon morphs into something else.   This one started with a Christmas quilt I saw, but didn’t need a Christmas quilt, so I changed the colors to autumn and then I was off and running with an entirely different quilt.  So the lack of getting something on that 2014 list done, isn’t because I didn’t make quilts.   I didn’t make those quilts, but I made many quilts.   Yes, I’d still like to make them and I have another entire list to add to it.   Perhaps next year, I can put one a month on my list the first of each month and actually achieve some of them.   Too many busy days.

The same thing happened with the machine embroidery.   I have plenty on my list, but nothing was done this year.   It is time to clear everything off this desk except for the notebook with all the lists.   Then maybe I can check off some of the items.   I would love to check off more than I add.   But I know that the neighbor lady and I are planning two gardens this year to feed both families.  I’m not sure if that will give us more or fewer busy days.

System shutdown

IMG_5168These are something new that I found interesting.   There were 30 little bulblets in the package and are now planted in the hoophouse.   Many will be transplanted outside in the spring as they have to be planted a foot apart.

My laptop and the chainsaw weren’t working yesterday so we took both in to have looked at and with minor adjustments, both work now.   And since we were out at noon, we made a stop at Panera’s for lunch.   Out of the last 5 times I have been there, 4 have had mistakes in my order.   No wonder I don’t eat there often.   Yes, they fix them, but it is inconvenient.

When we came home, I collapsed, my body wouldn’t go any farther, so I listened and napped.

This afternoon, I watched a webinar with Lindee G on applique and am hoping tomorrow I will feel refreshed.   Does your body ever just quit on you?

Birthday embroidery

IMG_4333

It’s time to start thinking about all the birthdays coming up this spring, summer and fall.   There are a number of them in this family.  So I started prepping with this embroidered chef’s apron.  Costco had the aprons and the design is an Anita Goodesign.

It is possible there will not be a post tomorrow.   I have to be at the outpatient surgery unit at 10.30 tomorrow morning for my first eye cataract appointment.  I probably will not be doing anything exciting tomorrow – or maybe I will be, but won’t get it posted.   I mean, isn’t eye surgery exciting????.

Pumpkins and Owls

IMG_3505

IMG_3503

Our daughter and DH is hosting the annual Thanksgiving dinner.   She always does a lovely job of decorating.  This year I am contributing, with the help of the dollar store, these pumpkins. They now all have her last initial.

IMG_3507

And here is an owl for each of the boys.  They may enjoy the owls on their doors and they may finish decorating them or leave them as is.

An easy, cute bag

IMG_3166

I  found a little bag called a “small flat tote” on the label.   In fact, it was a flat bag without the side seams sewn.   I embroidered this on one side.

IMG_3167

Here is the back side of it.

IMG_3168

Then I sewed up both sides and across the bottom corners and here is a cute small bag which measures 11″ square.    Another little gift ready when I need it.   And the embroidery took the longest.   If you don’t embroider, you might want to do some other thing such as paint, etc.

A day out

IMG_2802

Today. Mary and I decided to have a day out.   We first went to Sew Fun at Quality Sewing and the photo above is of some of the items Lana Jones made to entice us to buy books and other items.   She is truly an artist and we enjoyed her tips and hints.   And to our surprise, we were each given a DVD of hints, embroidery patterns and other items for coming to the meeting.

Then it was off to Trader Joe’s for a very few items, followed by lunch at Panera’s.   Our next stop was Costco where we stocked up on dog treats and off to the post office to turn in the orange slip and pick up a package.  After that we went to Wal-Mart  where I bought a pre-quilted panel for a baby boy and she purchased flannel for various projects for the 5 babies that will soon be entering her world.    After that we were tired enough to come home and rest.

The last bear and pattern trouble

IMG_2780This is the last of the bear blocks.   So I cut out and put together as directed all the connecting units.   Here’s where  the pattern is wrong.   The kit has 6 fabrics which are to be cut into 2 x 2 squares, which I did.

IMG_2781

As you can see, 5 – 2″ squares do not equal 10″   The squares are to be cut 10 x  10.   So next sewing time I will have to find a coordinating fabric to add to each of these pieces.   And just when I was so ready to put the top mostly together and sit it to the side until baby is born.  One block will have her name, birthday, etc on it, so can’t finish until she arrives.    However do you think they got the idea that if I cut 5 – 2 squares that I would end up with 10″ after 1/2″ seam on each piece.   If I had figured it out to begin with, I could have cut the pieces 1.5″ and it would have come out perfect.  Then again, if a mistake had to be made, at least this is one I can fix by just adding another piece.  6 x 2 = 12 – 3 for seams will be 9 and I need 10.    I’ll have to think on this overnight.

IMG_2777

Meanwhile the fleece that didn’t get clean Friday is in the washing machine soaking – I’ll take it out so it doesn’t get agitated.   But I think it can soak overnight and see if it can get cleaner.   Tomorrow is another good day for drying a fleece.   I may have to card it to get the ends open and then rewash.

I did finish spinning some wool that I purchased in roving years ago.   Now I’m not sure if I want to ply it on itself or with another color.   I’m really leaning to another color.

Hot day in the Pacific Northwest

91 degrees may not be hot in other parts of the US, especially in the south.   But it is unusual here.   It certainly keeps one from being energetic.  One more hot day and then the weather will drop into the upper 70s which is very comfortable.

 IMG_2776

Here is one more block for the quilt.   These little bears are turning out so cute.
