Jeans and hospital visit

Jeans – one more thing off the list – well, not quite, because I still need to stitch up the inseam.  This stitch out took 2.5 hours of stitching.  The design is from  Hatched in Africa called “Jacobean Jewels #1669″   It would be pretty to add the crystals, but I think they are pretty just the way they are.   For each pant leg, I combined two designs to make the design go farther up the leg.

In addition to that, we visited a neighbor who is in the hospital.   She is 91 and should have better care than she is getting.   Tomorrow, she is being transferred to a hospital in Seattle.  After heart valve surgery, we don’t know how long she will be there or where she will be transferred next.   She’s been inpatient since the first of April and very tired of it.

Tomorrow, we will try to put more coats on sheep and then for the near future, I may be spending more time visiting with Alice in the hospital.

I am surprised I didn’t hear from more of you about how much you are getting done that you didn’t realize you are doing.   Keep listing.   You’ll be surprised.

Uncoordinated bits and pieces

Todays news is uncoordinated bits and pieces

You know someone is walking really close behind you when they step on the back of your sandal.  She does wait at the door when I come into the house, though I think if given any encouragement, she would love to come in.  Her nose is frequently in my hand and sometimes checking out the pockets.

Daughter gave me this cute knitting bag.  My guess is she was tired of seeing the Ziploc bags in which I was constantly carrying the knitting.   So now this bag carries the beginning of a new pair of socks.   Perhaps I can find the instructions soon and put them in the bag as well.

I also took apart the legs of 2 pair of jeans in preparation for adding designs on them.  If you have ever had to remove the original stitching, then you know why they hold together so well.

Today’s frustration was that I hire people, tell them exactly what I want and after 1/2 day’s work, they tell me that they are done for today and will come back next week or later in the week for another day.  Today, I was privileged to have 2 people help with the clearing and one to spray fruit trees and whatever else needed doing.   The fruit trees are sprayed.   She lasted 4 hours today and will be back to work more tomorrow.   The others- one lasted 3 hours and the other 6 hours and they want to come back next week for a day.   Is this something new?  I mean the sun was shinning, which has to be better than working in rain.  How does one hire people who are willing to work all day and several days until the job is done?

Humming birds

These humming birds are for the neighbor’s  90th birthday next month.   They are humming birds digitized by Hatch in Africa.   (I’m sorry, the link above is not working, but you can google is as they have many beautiful designs.)    I was told a party was being planned, and since she is sometimes in a wheel chair, I think this lap quilt will be a good size for her.   The next time I have, it will go on the quilting machine.

I finished quilting this piece today as well.   It still needs to be trimmed and bound.   Here is an up close of the quilting.

I neglected my walk today and spent another entire day in the studio getting these 2 quilt to this point.  Tonight will be an earlier to bed night.   Tomorrow I’ll have to be out and about food shopping etc.   Perhaps this weekend I can catch up on the walking again.

Sewing Snowmen and snowflakes

Sewing Snowmen and snowflakes has been an all day project which obviously isn’t finished yet.  The digitizing isn’t perfect .  It’s a learning process.   Even so, it is so very much better than if I had just done a machine zigzag around each of these pieces.  It took a lot of time to cut around the fabrics before I could continue to sew.    I need to get my Scan n Cut learned to make this faster.   Now that I’ve taken a photo of this with the sashing, I think I may have to change that.   It has the same aqua/turquoise, but just doesn’t seem right.   I will decide later.

It will not get finished as I have other embroidery that must be done tomorrow.   A neighbor is turning 90 in April and needs a lap quilt for in her wheel chair.   So that is a priority tomorrow.

Neurologist, new phone, digitizing

DH has been having some issues with balance and shuffling.  Today we went to the neurologist for a review.   He says the only thing he can see that indicates Parkinson’s is the shuffle and is sending DH to the physical therapist to work with him on that.  He also said that DH should be reminded frequently to stand up straight and take long strides.   His brain will be retrained in that way.  DH had a brain scan and the doctor remarked that the brain “looks beautiful”.    Apparently if it is Parkinson’s, DH is very fortunate that he is getting it at this age instead of younger as it advances more slowly.

Since Christmas I have not had a dependable phone, even though the Apple people have tried to repair it, and replaced it once.   We went to the store and I now have a new IPhone 7.   So hopefully all my phone woes are over.

The rest of the afternoon, I played with the digitizing program and hopefully tomorrow will be able to do some more stitch outs.

unknown socks/digitizing practice

I knitted 2 inches of ribbing for these unknown socks and then decided the yarn is too heavy for the pattern I chose, so will look on Ravelry to find a different pattern.  There are plenty of socks patterns that use a size 2 needle.   See the shadows, even the weather person didn’t forecast sun for today, so it was a big, happy surprise.

Today was productive, but so much was background work, like cutting and washing the batting and backing for the next quilt to be quilted, choosing fabrics for a quilt for my neighbors 90th birthday next month, and cutting the blocks which will be embroidered.

I did a bit more practice on the digitizing and this is the result stitched out.   All these things are done in the background and there isn’t much to take a photo of until things come together.   Then there are the normal living things, like getting up, dressed and walking the 10,000 steps. meals.   I try to get half the steps done before lunch.  It seems if I fail that, the steps don’t get done.

I started reading the time management book last night and one thing I picked up was to not only make a list – which I do, but to put times beside each item so you know how long it really takes as so often we under guess.  That was interesting.   I found that a 2.5″ sock cuff (cast on 3 times) took me 3 hours with a 10 minute break each hour for walking.   Some things took longer than anticipated and some took less.  Some things didn’t get done, which is okay.  I also only allowed 30 minutes of computer reading time until late afternoon.   I realize when I don’t really want to do something, I’m very entertained by reading email instead.

Tonight, I will put together a list for tomorrow, which will include grocery shopping.   I am hoping 90 minutes will be okay for that.  And I need to chose a design for the quilt that is now mounted on the machine and threads for the neighbors quilt.

Learning new skill is difficult

Once again, I am reminded of how frustrating and difficult learning a new skill is.   I don’t wonder why children get tired and balk .   I’m ready to throw up my hands and scream.  Their whole early life seems to be learning new skills.   I think I understand and have the concept learned, and then, I mess up.   It is very frustrating and exhausting.   And if I keep at it without taking a break, I start making all types of stupid mistakes.  So tonight I have only my first attempts at digitizing applique to show you.   I was going to do the owl quilt in the conventional way and got “smart” and decided it would look nicer if the applique was embroidered on.   Yes, it does look much nicer, but the learning will make the quilt take me longer.

So tomorrow, I will try to get a quilt on the quilting machine for a change of pace.   Then I will go back to work on the digitizing.   If I intersperse it with other work and keep practicing, I’ll learn.   Never too old, right?

Never too old to learn

One is never too old to learn.   Mary came over today I had fun learning once again (refreshing) the basics of digitizing for applique.  I have several quilts that I want to do including

this owl and flower quilt that will be so much easier to do and neater looking if I digitize the designs for the eyes and wings and do them with the machine embroidery.   It is fun and can carve a few hours out of your day while you are having fun.     And there is a snowman quilt next on my list.    On my, I can find so many things that will be much easier and prettier with this method.

Tomorrow, I will be going to a funeral for a neighbor.

Cleaning, New friends and March goals

Cleaning

Some days are just not meant to happen the way I had them planned.   When I was getting ready for the knitting adventure this morning, I looked at my phone and found that the service people were coming to service my embroidery machine and my knitting machine at 9.  That put me in fast action as  it was 8:15 and I needed to tidy up some before they came.  At least knitting wasn’t until 10.    So that is exactly what I did.

Now I have these papers and books that were laying all over in two nice neat boxes and I can actually find them as they are standing up.

Then I went to a new knitting/crocheting group which started this morning and meets once a month.  We started out with 5 of us and ended with 10.   So that is a good start.   The room is small and I think after 15 they may have to move to another room

March Goals

The projects I am planning to work on this month:

    1. Frosty’s alter eg0  (WA state)

    2. Under Construction (Judy)

    3. make enough rose blocks and get quilt to the flimsy state     Linking up to  Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal March Linkup)

    4. McKenna Ryan “It’s Fishy” which will be on going for several months

    5. Learn to digitize some embroidery

    6.  Embroider Dish towels using HIA designs

    7. Make screens to keep hummingbirds from suicide as they  get up into the outside skylights and can’t get out.

    8. Make one pair of socks

    9. Clean out greenhouse

    10. plant seeds for peas and greens

That should keep me out of trouble for the month of March and maybe even April.

Do you have some goals for March?

Footsteps finished

Footsteps is now bound and finished.    It was an embroidery design by Anita Goodesign that has been waiting to get embroidered.    It is done in tiles.  One hoops the muslin and then when the block is outlined, put in the fabric you are using.   That saves a lot of fabric as it is not hooped – just treated as  applique.

This was a January project, so now I will go work on the January socks that are waiting to be finished.
