Relish making, watering, summer produce

The relish I started last night turned into a lovely product.   I made a double batch and canned 11 cups of relish.  DH can’t have sugar, but can have honey.   So I substituted 1 cup honey for the cup and a half of sugar.  Next time, I may go down to 3/4 cup of honey.  It does have salt, but I’m hoping that if he eats a little once in awhile and we aren’t using salt other places, he can get by with it.   If he gets swelling in the legs again, I’ll be sharing it with the children instead.  If you are interested in the recipe, let me know and I will share.    Thank you so much Dar for sharing with me.

Harvest today, included more blueberries, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, basil, and potatoes.   The summer produces so much bounty that it keeps me  busy.   That’s why you see very little creative work then.  In the winter, we live off the summer’s bounty and I have more time for the fiber arts.   Maybe some of you can send me some photos of your work and I can help you enjoy your creative arts.

Even so I need to use fiber just to stay sane.   I thought the month was nearly over, but I just looked at the calendar and I still have most of a week.   Maybe I can sneak in another finish this month.

July monthly goal link up + cooking

I am linking to http://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2017/07/one-monthly-goal-july-goal-setting-link.html with this little fox.

I won’t make all my goals this month, but that seems to be the new normal.

Today, after going to the gym and picking blueberries, I tackled Lasagna from scratch, making a double recipe of marinara sauce.  It took two hours to chop and prepare everything for the marinara and “cheese”, then an hour in the oven.   It will be gone in two meals.   Something seems wrong with that, however, that’s goes to show how much being able to buy preassembled items affects our lives.  And I do have enough of the marinara sauce for another meal.

Dar, one of the readers here, sent me a relish recipe to try.   This is as far as I am.   Everything is cut and salted and spending the night in the refrigerator.   At least when I tackle that tomorrow, it will be half done, so it won’t seem like it is taking so long.  I am nearly caught up on the cucumber issue.   Next I’ll tackle the zucchini.  I can grate that and put it in the freezer to make items during the winter.

And I did get a chance to check on the bees who are doing just fine.   One hive received another box today.

Paper pieced fox; dogs, cucumbers

I used both ends of the day to be able to complete this little fox.   The pattern comes with two sheets to paper piece, one facing each direction.   I decided with this month’s intrusions, one will have to do.

This is the way the cucumbers looked going into the dehydrator and here they are finished.    Then I crumbled some in the blender for sauce or soup  so you could see how that looks.

This is a quart of dried basil.   Growing and dehydrating basil takes so little time and is really cost effective.

The rest of the day was spent trying to outsmart the 2 dogs who live here, but would rather be off checking out the entire neighborhood.    They are in escape mode once again.   So I erected some electric netting in one place and am hoping it stays hot.   In another place, I put a 2 x 12 x 8.   Let’s see if they can chew their way out of that! They can be challenging.   DH says it is because they have the coyotes trained to not enter and they have nothing else to do but think up escape plans.

And we did get a visit from youngest grandson  who turned 12 yesterday  – (along with his mother who is tad older).  It was terrific to have a normal day.

The little fox and cucumbers

I’m currently working on this little fox, but progress is slow right now, and there are many small pieces.

The garden also beckons me and there are now 9 trays of cucumbers on the dehydrator.  These will be great for sauces, dips, and flavoring.   Although there are still many cucumbers to share.  I am only making a very few pickles this year, because there are still some from last year.   I am also looking for a great relish recipe if anyone has one and is willing to share.

The current plan is rest and relax tomorrow.   I hope you will join with us in enjoying the day.

Happy Independence Day

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

Summer and it’s produce have official arrived.   We are scheduled for an 80 degree week and we have started picking zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes.    The tomatoes and zucchini, I’m fine with.   And I can make some pickles, but these plants are loaded.  Besides pickling and eating fresh, how else does one save cucumbers.

And we now have 12 cups and 1 pint of strawberry jam.  In this house, it’s not good to run out of strawberry jam or peanut butter and we ran out of both.   Therefore, tomorrow must include a run to Costco for their Kirkland brand organic peanut butter.

That was the limit of our work today.   We enjoyed a bit of sun and are listening to all the crackers that are popping while still daylight.  The noise scares the animals, so they are locked up for the night.    Enjoy the sights and sounds tonight.

July challenges and Elm Street’s OMG

I didn’t quite finish all of June as I didn’t get the Sparkling snowmen done for Judy’s challenge.   The others I did finish.   Now for July is seems there are more that I want to get done, but there is strawberry jam to make and pickles to start preserving, the tomatoes are starting to ripen,  the garlic will need to be pulled in about two weeks,  and the garden is needing watering 3 or more times a week.  Plus there are 4 birthdays.   However will I fit all this into a month that is always shorter than I need.   Summer is here and I am loving it.   So I’ll do what I can.

July challenges:

  1.     Linking up to Elm Street OMG with the Winter woodland paper pieced fox.

  2. Patchwork times #12 will be to finish the binding on the sunbonnet Sue that has been quilted.

  3. Washington state quilters to finish the Sparkling snowmen

  4. My Hatched in Africa challenge will be to use one of their designs on something, but as of yet, I haven’t decided.

Have you committed yourself to some challenges this month?   If so, I’d love to hear about them.

Lemons and skips

Yes, we have lemons – that is 4 lemons the size of cherry tomatoes.   It’s time study up and see what went wrong.  The little tree is now full of fresh blossoms and seems to be very happy out in the hoop house this summer.

I continue to have new experiences and usually just when I think I have learned this machine.  This is a scene put down with heat and bond.   The quilting machine didn’t seem very happy about that.  See those skips.   I continued on and then took it to the sewing machine, which also refused to sew on it.   I washed it and then I was able to stitch it on the sewing machine.  I have quilted through this before without any issues.  Does anyone have any ideas what was happening?

I did finally finish this “cabin in the woods” hanging and it’s okay, but I wish the quilting would have gone better.   This was a test quilt for the on-line Quilt Magazine.  I think it was featured in the October 2016 issue.  It was in line to be quilted last fall when it decided to vanish.   I found it after Christmas sitting between two stacks of drawers.   It finished at 34″ square.

Gym, dogs, groceries and heat

I was off to the gym this morning and when I returned, it was to a mind exercise.   I had to trick the dogs into going into the upper pasture that is now secure so they would be with the sheep.   They’d so much rather be close to the house.    So I felt that I had exercised both the body and the brain.

Then it was time to read email and download the grocery freebie.   Our grocery store offers a free item every Friday.   It can only be downloaded on Friday.   Often it is something we don’t use, so I pick it up and it is always welcome in the food collection basket at the church.   Some of the items are things the grandchildren will enjoy – like the gummy bears.

By then it was  lunchtime.   So that accomplished, I went to the grocery store and bought some petunias for the front yard as well as the few groceries.   Petunias always look so happy.   I will try to get them planted Monday, because it is forecast to be in the 90s for Saturday and Sunday.   So I’ll leave them in the shade until I plant them.

Does heat encourage you to take a siesta?   We did and then it was time to feed animals again.  I am not complaining about the heat, but I do go just a bit slower.   The weather is certainly not typical as June is often a very rainy month.   These are August type days.  So I just keep watering and try to keep up with the most important things and my sewing/quilting has to take a back seat, just as the plants did during the winter.

Shopping for essentials

We spent much today shopping for essentials.   That is if you call tractors and washing machines essentials.   We looked at both and will take the next week to make decisions.   The tractor salesman may have talked himself out of deal.   He is coming over next week to look at the land, but really thought he knew someone who would do the work we need at an incredibly low price.   But then sometimes that is too good to be true.   We will wait and see.

The washing machine has a higher priority.   I am not finding a top loader that has all that I want and that I can still fill with water if I want to soak something or even dye it.  So I’m still searching.   It seems the companies have gone to the programmed machine that weighs the clothes and decides how much water that load will need.

We did buy groceries and light bulbs, so we are all set for the weekend.

Overwhelmed, understaffed, and lists

What do I do when overwhelmed and understaffed?   I make more and more detailed lists.    At the top of the day, when I wasn’t sure which way to go, I started writing down all the things that were bothering me.   I knew they couldn’t all be achieved today or even this week.  On paper, they are not bogging my brain down.  Having made these lists, I could then do a better job of prioritizing.  And yes, more was added as the day went on.  I mean who knew that

the washing machine wanted to die today?    And who knew that when I went to REI to get a pair of gym pants, they would have nothing casual?  Every pair they had were meant to show every wrinkle in the skin.  So after an hour of driving to and from REI, I went to my list and added, “shop for pants and a washing machine”    Costco is sending me pants to try and probably Sears will be delivering a washing machine (still deciding).   Now that was so much easier and better than chasing all over the countryside, wasting time and gas.   I do love some of these modern conveniences even though I believe that we should know how to be self-sufficient.

And who knew my neighbor would call trying to find another neighbor who was no longer in the nursing home (she was transferred back to the hospital)?   Who knows what a day will bring, which is one reason I need my lists for a larger picture of what has to be done and what can be pushed off.

What did I achieve today?

  1. made these muffins that we had with yogurt and fruit for dinner.

  2.  made a list of things to be done by the woman who periodically helps me with the garden and animals.

  3. Called repair for washer and water under wood floor.   Will run fan for 2 days to try to save floor.

  4. at stated above made a trip to REI

  5. researched which washer I want to buy and sent link to

  6. checked bees water

  7. went through fleeces and put a lock in that sheep’s folder

  8. watered hoop house

  9. paid the bills that were due

  10. Copied the utility bills and delivered the neighbors for them to pay

  11. Checked in with a sheep neighbor for info and to see she’s okay

  12. contacted sheep person for registrations for sheep I purchased a year ago

  13. ordered dog food

  14. did two loads of wash before disaster

  15. got lemon tree moved to hoop house

  16. checked on Aunt and found she was moved to rehab today

  17. sew a button on a jacket

  18. and all the things we do every day and don’t count – sweep floors, make meals, feed animals, etc, etc, etc.

  19. There will be more things done between now and bedtime that I can check off.  But then again, I’ll think of more to add.

  20. sewed on my bunny.

Did you notice how many of these items only took a few minutes?     What did you achieve today?   I’ll bet it was a lot more than you gave yourself credit for.   Make a list of everything you do in a day.   It will surprise you, because normally one gets to the end of the day and can’t think of much that was accomplished.  At least that’s what happens here.  When I make a list, I can see that something is done which in turn makes me feel better.

Okay, it’s your turn.   GO make those lists.  And I would love to hear how it went.
