Home again, Hurray! and Felici

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts.  We appreciated them.

This machine records echocardiograms.  It is fascinating to watch the heart as it pumps.  No problem with DH’s heart.   And truthfully I’m not sure what we are going to do differently.  He is back to normal now and the doctor said with exercise, the body will create new pathways to take the place of those that were blocked.  That leaves me not knowing how to try to prevent this in the future or when to know if there is trouble.

So what does one do when needing to relax?  Obviously, go to the sewing studio and sew.   There is a luncheon we are invited to tomorrow and the 4 ladies involved in the company will be there.  So I thought perhaps they would each like a pair of bowl cozies.   (https://craftwarehouse.com/sew-this-soup-bowl-cozy-free-pattern)  They are now ready to wrap.   It helped a lot that they were all cut out.

Uncharted territory

Is this as much uncharted territory for you as it is for us?   It was like we were in a foreign country speaking a foreign language.  The doctor suggested that there have been good outcomes using this for Parkinsonian symptoms without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.  I must admit we were out of our comfort zone.   But DH will try it for a month and see if he gets better sleep and appetite as well as having better balance.   Any one of those would be more than he can get from the medications now offered.  If this is something you have had experience with, I’d truly appreciate it if you would share.

I have started making the bowl cozies.  They will take a bit of time, but I’m liking them and they are reversible which is terrific.   I put the website for making them on yesterday’s blog.

Bowl cozies

https://craftwarehouse.com/sew-this-soup-bowl-cozy-free-pattern/

It’s time to think of gifts and here is another idea.   Today I selected fabrics for the microwavable bowl cozies,(https://craftwarehouse.com/sew-this-soup-bowl-cozy-free-pattern/ I’ll be making).  Of course, I was really getting my act together and had chosen and cut out the fabrics when I realized that a trip to JoAnn’s was in order.  Fortunately I had 2 60% off coupons, one for 50% off and a 25% off entire order.   Plus I was using a gift card, so my little excursion was inexpensive.  If you are making these to put into the microwave, it is imperative that every item you use is 100% cotton to avoid a fire.  Many battings have “scrim” on them which helps it to hold together, but it can also catch fire in the microwave.   If you are using the cozies only when you take the food out of the microwave, you can get by with that.   But since these will be gifts and my DH always heats his soup with the bowl in one of these, I play safe and pay the extra for this batting.  (If you click on the red, the website for the cozies should pop up).

These bowl cozies take 2 – 10″ squares of coordinating fabric plus the batting.  The pattern is on the website.  Enjoy making them.   I’d love to see a photo.

Remember the list I wanted to accomplish in November.   Now that it is Nov 10, I have finished one of the projects and started 2 more.  I’d better get more serious since there are 20 items on the list you saw, but more that weren’t on that list.

Challenges

This day was full of challenges.   First the weather with very gray skies and a real downpour, then the dentist which is not my favorite thing.   Oh, and yes, I missed the exit off the interchange half an hour away coming home. I’m not familiar with that exit and I get lost very easily.   So I turned on my phone GPS  and it insisted on sending me to Canada.   I had entered the house address correct, but hadn’t put in the city and state.   So that took me about 45 minutes to get all figured out.  What a relief it was to get on a familiar road again.  That essentially ate my day.   I fed the animals, then us and came to the studio to collect my wits.

These are the two little pea pods made today.  As you can see they are not perfectly the same size and that is because there is room for trimming if the edges didn’t exactly meet when folded.     Ideas for use:   paperclips, USB sticks, half dozen cookies (in plastic wrap), knitting markers, chapstick, small package of tissue.   I’m sure you will come up with many more ideas.   I will make 10-12 as I like to have them on hand because one never knows when a small gift will be needed.  And Christmas is coming.   If I have a small gift, this is the perfect wrap.

Dentist and zippers

An hour drive to the dentist, an hour to clean the teeth and an hour back.   Plus I get to repeat it tomorrow since they had a cancellation and I have a small cavity.

By the time I returned home, the rain was coming down.  That seemed like a great time to start on my gift making.   I pulled out the long zippers that I like to buy when a store is having a close out – the same zippers that I rarely have a use for but can’t resist a 50 cent sale.

This Lazy girl Sweetpea pattern calls for a 16″ or longer zipper for each little bag.  I now have 10 cut out and ready to assemble.   For me choosing the fabrics often takes more time than I think it should.  I’m all ready now to make these next sewing time.

October mug rugs and dozer work

I made 2 of these mug rugs experimenting with how they are done.   The designs are from Julia’s needle work.   My daughter and her friend both have cats and ride their bikes a lot, so they will enjoy them.

And finally the dozer, the sand, and the contractor are all here and the dozer work begins.   The tanks go underground and then will be covered.   The propane and water tanks were to be completely buried by the end of August.   I will be so happy to get it done.   They are now saying by the weekend, they will have it done.   I have learned now to believe contractors.

Grape clean up time

In Costco on October 1st.

Today my favorite sewing machine refused to work, so I tried the next favorite and it didn’t like the fabric, so that means a trip to the hospital for repair.   I hope that I find the time tomorrow.   It also means I didn’t sew today.

The grapes are finished for this season and

this crew was very willing to clean up the leaves and any left grapes that weren’t suitable for humans.

Devastation and a scarecrow

Devastation is the only word to describe what is going on in the path of Irma.   We have been to some of these islands and the people were very poor before this storm.  I can’t even imagine not being able to get clean water.  The sadness of it seems to bog me down.  So after picking up my co-op order of rice and dates, feeding the bees which has become a daily need, and dealing with the garden produce,

I decided to start work on this happy scarecrow.  It was designed for turn under applique which is not going to happen here for a small seasonal wall hanging.   So I am putting seam-a-seam on the back of pieces and re-cutting them.   This has a lot of small pieces, but it should go fairly fast.  There are enough pieces cut for two hangings so I’ll have one for me and one for a gift.

Whirlwind August

What a whirlwind this month of August has been.   I feel as if I have been chasing my tail.  Today is the end of the month and I did finish 4 sewing/knitting goals, but two were left undone.  A third,

is now put together with backing and batting, but when I have time, I’d like to add more quilting.

In addition to these projects, I have spent an incredible amount of time in the kitchen.  Today again, there was more pear butter canned as well as more produce brought in.   I have another dehydrator full of cucumbers for chips, the last batch of pear butter is condensing in the crock pot, the refrigerator is full of cucumbers waiting their turn.   I gave up and gave some raspberries, blueberries, cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes to the neighbor.   The grapes are starting to get ripe and the weather is so incredible, this scenario may continue for another month.   We have started new beets and greens for the winter and they have popped their little heads above ground now.    And we water, water, water, water.  Usually it rains a day or two when school starts, but not this year.

Today a neighbor came over and we wormed 1/3 of the sheep for the winter.   We will be dividing them and giving each group a suitor soon.   Then we count out 5 months to start the baby business.

In between all this, we have made time for doctors visits and a very few staples to eat.  (Today, I visited with the Geek squad so I could bring you this report – I love those fellows) And we have daily fed, watered, and cared for the bees, sheep, ducks, geese, and dogs – oh, yes, and for each other.   I am loving this crazy, out of control summer.
