Better storage and Sunny Chinese coins

IMG_0069sChinese Coins is one of the fastest, easiest and brightest quilts that I remember making.  It was fun watching the bright colors come together in this “rain forest”  labeled as Seattle.   Not complaining – just sometimes a bright spot is fun.   The rust color panels are a solid panel so that went rapidly.   This quilt measures 51 x 70 because I wanted to add a bit of rust color to the coin stacks.    I used Babylock’s love of Sewing with Pat Sloan’s lap quilt pattern.  Her jelly roll had much more variety than the one I had on hand which is why I add the rust.

Rain, gray skies and yellow blocks

IMG_0064jyu

This morning I did go to the gym, but only did 10 minutes on the bike and I realized that my energy is not back, so did other “run around” chores, like get the co-op order, get the new calendar with the Jewish dates, and go grocery shopping.    By then it was lunch and half the day was spent.

After that, it was time for quilt therapy.   But I wanted something nice and bright so took half a jelly roll and cut yellow blocks to make Chinese coins  (2.5 x 6.5″).   Because the fabric is already 2.5″, cutting goes fast.   Then I tossed the pieces together and started sewing.   It is nice and bright isn’t it?   And this is how many of my ufos happen.   I have a whole list of January projects and this one was not on it.  Nor was it even a thought until today.  But I like it and will finish the top and then go back and finish the top 2004 Shop Hop block flimsy.

Sheep shelter and last block

IMG_0057jUnnamed yet, but leaning toward Frosty, escaped detection from the coyotes last night.  Today, in the pouring rain, I tried to make an area safe from the beasts, but failed, so put them in the pen near the Shetland rams.   I’m not sure how great an idea that is, because the fence between the boys is in need of repair   But the Cormos are safe inside a building for tonight and maybe tomorrow there will be some rainless spots in the day.

IMG_0056lLast block:

This is block 16 and paper pieced.  Not perfect, but I’m going to let it pass until  tomorrow.   I spent all morning on this little block.   Paper piecing just seems to take a lot of time.   Tomorrow is gym and grocery day.  I need to pick up my co-op order and should go to Costco.   But I really want to stay home.  I know there are kindred spirits out there.

A new baby and more blocks

IMG_0044S

IMG_0046

He’s really new in this photo, but he had it figured out by the time we found him.  So he’s a strong little one.   This is Ava’s first baby.

IMG_0052s IMG_0053z IMG_0054s IMG_0055zAnd I’ll soon have enough blocks to put this together.

2004 Shop Hop Blocks

IMG_0035a IMG_0036s IMG_0037s 2004 Shop Hop Blocks:

I am at the point where not all the pieces that are attached to that particular pattern make sense.    I do need to make 6 more blocks to complete a top and since I do not have 6 more patterns, but I do have an extra package of pieces, I’ll make one up.    A complete quilt is better than a ufo, right?  And when one gets these patterns, one usually only gets some of the pieces, therefore, I also will be coming up with some extra pieces to complete some of the patterns.    However, this quilt top will soon be done and on a hanger which is so much closer to someone being able to use it.IMG_0038s

On another note:  I received these two skeins of yarn from Knitpick in place of the ones with dyes that didn’t come through.   They are really very nice to work with.

PS:   The weather promises to be warmer tomorrow – meaning above freezing day and night for a time.   I’d so much rather rain than freezing.

Sunrise, an apron, and blocks

IMG_0019S

SUNRISE

This was the gorgeous sunrise I enjoyed when I went out to let the animals outside.

IMG_0027X

This wonderful apron was in a squishy that came arrived in yesterday’s mail.  (We do get late mail).    Sally, my friend, made it and sent it as a surprise.   Everyone needs a ” Sally” friend.   After being down all week, it was a real ” pick me up”.   And the workmanship is quality beyond fault.   Thank you, Sally

IMG_0028C

Look at the pocket.   It looks like a flower pot.   And the words are so positive.    I just love it!   It is my “Special Occasion” apron.  Mother worked in the kitchen, then when it was time to sit with the guests, she would change into her special apron – which for her was often one of those frilly half aprons.

More quilt blocks

IMG_0033S

It would have been so helpful if the shop owners had come up with a one size block.   My various blocks were meant to be anywhere from an 8″ block to a 9″ block.   At this point, I’m not real sure how that will work.   For now, I’ll make the blocks and see how many of each I have.

I am feeling so much better that DH is getting a turn at feeling the bug.   It’s really difficult to not try to get right back in the swing of things, but remembering that people seem to get this twice in a month, is slowing me down a bit.

“GoFor” -my new name

img_0009s

I don’t remember applying for the job, but “GoFor” seems to be my new name this week.  Another fun day started with me dressed to go to the gym and then the dog escaped through the gate before I did    I did not know that he had escaped the pasture.  So instead of gym, I went dog hunting.  It was enough exercise getting him back home.   He seems to think that our little bit of land isn’t enough and he should check out at the very least 10 neighbors and their land.  About the time I got him home, the fellow erecting our fence showed up, so he checked the pasture and repaired the “hot” wire so it is now very hot.   Both dogs respect the heat and will not dig under the wire.

Then the real “GoFor” started”  more posts, more nails, rebar, brackets, wire, etc.   Do you think that I would find it all in one store?   Think again.   First I had to return the bad posts from the load yesterday and come back with some replacements.   Then to another store, that didn’t have the brackets and  it was off to a different store (of course, farther away)  to get the brackets and other items.   Then back home at noon to fix lunch.   After lunch, I finally had time to get the groceries.   And yes, I did make it home by 4 to feed the sheep.

img_0010iBefore I left I made these two blocks from my “Shop Hop 2004” collection.  This is a quilt I want to finish in January.  Each block is from a different store and each store had their own pattern.  I would really like to finish the top this coming week.  But time will tell.

After a week like this, it is so wonderful that God has prepared a special time of rest and renewal.   Happy Sabbath to all of you.

It’s so wonderful after a week like this

One monthly goal

img_0155

This month I am linking up to One Monthly Goal at Elm Street Quilts.  It is difficult to choose only one, but this quilt won.   It needs to be quilted, bound and labeled.   So that is January’s goal.  So stay tuned as I try to get this done.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! a time for scheduling

HAPPY NEW YEARimg_0148sToday I finished scheduling the lists of what I really wanted to get done in 2017.   There are more things, but I knew there were too many to realistically get done.   I settled for a dozen in each category.   Then I spent the rest of the day putting together a kit for each item.

img_0149sThis is 12 pair of socks with the pattern and yarn in each.   The list is under “Construction” at the top

img_0150sThis is the fish quilt and the bear paw, both time consuming and needling many parts.

img_0151sThese boxes hold the other 10 quilts and the 1/2 of the sewing projects.    DH wanted to know how I managed to get 10 quilts in there, but the batting is not in there and that makes the difference.

I did not fair so well on the embroidery projects.  I have two projects with the designs copied onto a jump stick, but I still need to find the fabric I purchased for the one and I need to purchase 3 fat quarters for the other one.

img_0153sOver the past few days, I have been making these chia seed crackers.    So we’ve been enjoying munching these during the day.   Vary the vegetable and the seasonings for fun.

  • 2 cups chia seed
  • 1 large onion
  • 3-4 stalks celery
  • 2 carrots
  • 1/2 red pepper
  • 1/4 cup sundried tomatoes (I used shredded)
  • 3 med garlic cloves
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • braggs or soy sauce to taste
  • 1 cup water
  1. Mix all in blender or food processor.   Let set 8-12 hours the optionally you can add 1/2 cup soaked sunflower seeds which I don’t think I’ll add next time.   Spread thinly on the plastic trays or parchment paper in the dehydrator and start checking them after 10 hours.

  2. The original recipe that I took off from was from Lorraine Godsoe in the book Raw Inspiration by Lisa Montgomery.    There are several good cracker/bread type receipes in this ook

Double star duo finished top

img_0133a

After spending some of each of the last 3 days on this Double Star Duo paper pieced top, it is ready to go to a hangar until its turn.

img_0130s

Getting to this point was fairly easy, if time consuming, it was tearing off all the paper that took me so long.   And then I found the red runs bleeds.   So I tried washing some of the left over pieces and eventually the red does quit bleeding.   I will finish this and wash it with a color catcher which should handle the problem.  I chose these colors years ago, so am not sure why I chose to put those white squares in there or why I didn’t choose to make each star different.  But this is what it is, and it will be cute for an infant.  AND it is close to leaving the ufo pile.

There are left over pieces of the tissue with the pattern printed on them.   If one of you would like to make this little quilt, I’ll gladly share the pattern.   Just let me know.
