Starts with few finishes.

IMG_1345

Some days I don’t feel like much has been achieved because a some of several things were done.  To day we planted 85 daffodils here beside the grapes because I didn’t want to go to all the trouble of digging up grass where I wanted them and they are getting in so late.  But I didn’t want to lose them.   They will be done blooming before the grapes need the room, so they won’t interfere with each other.   Maybe in the fall, I can “get a better start” or I may just like some color where they are. (the dark area).   In another place we put the last 15 tulips.   The ones planted at the right time are now coming up.

We  picked up some starting soil and other items at the wholesale house.

I put a quilt on the frame to quilt.   And I started the binding on another quilt.  Then I cast on for another pair of socks, – a number of starts today, but now I need finishes.

Dragonflies, butterflies, & hummingbirds

IMG_1310

These black squares with butterflies, hummingbirds, and dragonflies were given to me to “make something”.   They were part of a stencil and paint demo at a Sew Expo two years ago.    Now obviously, if you were  going to paint something to be used in a quilt, the stencil design would have a bit more variety.   These were pieces she had left over after the show.   So I have turned them into a small quilt with which I hope she will be happy.    I have used random scraps left from various projects.  It is 44 inches square.   Would you just bind it with one of the circle fabrics or would you border and bind it with one and which one?

2014 Super Bowl mystery quilted

IMG_1274

This 56 x 72′ quilt was Quiltbug’s 2014 Super Bowl mystery quilt.  It is now quilted, but not bound.  I haven’t decided yet who will get this one..   I rather like it and the print is from Mother’s collection.  As soon as I decide on a label, I’ll bind this quilt.  Or maybe I’ll bind all but the corner the label where the label will be placed as I like to sew the label into the binding.

This evening we had another box of bananas that were ripe enough to put in the freezer plus 1/2 of the dehydrator trays.   I’m guessing the other 3 boxes will be ready tomorrow and possibly Monday morning.

Excitement

IMG_1260

Such Excitement!   During the Super bowl yesterday, I was emailed that the local humane society had our cat.   First of all, she’s a barn cat and people leave cats out here, not take them.   Secondly, she will not let us touch her.   So when the message said they reached me because of her chip, I was a bit surprised.   About 9 years ago, we received her from the feral cat rescue because they could not calm her down enough to place her in a pet home.   The only thing we can figure out is that she must have hitched a ride when our son went to Starbucks and then got off the car.   So DH went off to rescue her this morning.   She was not happy being gone from here..    My guess is she will not do that again.

Come quilt with me!

I chose to work on this ufo today.   Most of the pieces were cut out and I finished these 4 blocks.   Galactic Explosion  by Nancy Rink was a 2009 BOM.   I did make one which is my extra cover up when I am cold at night or take a rest.  I liked it enough to cut out another and then didn’t sew it.

Sunday and Seahawks

991[1] 18099701976[1]

Yes, they lost.   But there’s another year and quite honestly, I thought the teams were well matched.

Here is a great humus recipe:  2 cups canned garbanzos drained, 1/3 cup sunflower seeds, 1 T lemon juice, add seasonings.   Blend well.

I did get this quilt on the machine and ready to quilt

 IMG_1254

And I have now turned the heel and am working the insteps.

P.S.  I love to hear from you.  Feel free to use the comments box as it makes me feel more connected to you.

January overview

IMG_1190

This Christmas quilt was a 2014 BOM and is completed.

IMG_1248

5 of these quilts have been completed and though they are all 40″ wide, they vary in length between 44 and 60′   Today 4 of them were gifted to the church for street mission.  I used a heavy batting and since the night temperatures are in the 30s, I’m sure they are welcome.

IMG_1197

This was a quick quilt using 4″ squares

IMG_1140

“The Grim Ripper” is a 9 x 12″ wall hanging that only needed quilting and binding.

IMG_1133

Hedgehog needed the key ring sewn back on (10 year job) and the two little coin purses have gone to a friend who loves blue.

IMG_1136

The pot holder is a prototype for some I will do in Seahawk colors with logos.   (WE WILL WIN!)

These are the first pair of finished socks this year.

January 28, I planted Endive, Escarole, lettuce, and broccoli in the back containers.  Today’ they are peeking.   Yesterday. I planted tomatoes and peppers in these cups.   They are inside and under lights since we could still have a very cold February.

In addition, the apples and grapes are pruned, a good share of the bark has been laid and the front flower bed is ready for annuals.

Third is finished

IMG_1224

Today was totally lovely.   The sun was shining – probably about 60 degrees.  My delightful grandsons came over with their parents.   We had such an enjoyable time, I forgot to get any photos.   So I took this one, just as they were leaving.   They helped my husband get the new ducks down to the pond, had some lunch and went out to play football toss.  The 11-year-old is almost eye to eye with me.IMG_1225 And there are enough strips for 2 more.    I will be so happy to have these strips finished into something usable.  I had them hanging on hangars from which they just kept slipping off when I walked to close to them.   Tomorrow will be a garden day, so I’m not sure when I’ll get back to them.

I went out and checked my bees and they were out in the sun.   I decided to give them a bit to eat, since the flowers aren’t yet in bloom and I don’t know what their reserves look like.   I do know that when the days started getting longer, the queen started laying more eggs.   If I make it through this winter, it will be my first year of not losing a hive.   Yea, I only have two, but it will be exciting to actually get the bees through the winter.

The third is on its way

IMG_1219

I hope you aren’t tired of these yet.   The third one you see here is quilted, but still needs binding.   I can get 2 more out of these scraps that we were given.  That will make a total of 5 little quilts.   I’m putting the same frogs on all of them.  Do you know a child that would turn down nice soft frog fabric?

And then there were two

IMG_1217 I haven’t finished the seed order yet, but needed a break, so I spent half the day quilting the second striped blanket.   I just love the flannel with the bright frogs.  And it feels so cozy working on it.

The squares

IMG_1197

Remember the squares I put together last  week. (It doesn’t have those waves when lying down, it’s just too heavy for the board after quilting)  I decided it would be great for a man in a wheelchair as it is just the right size. IMG_1199

So I used a fishing scene on the back IMG_1198

and quilted it with a clover design.  The  quilt is finished in less than a week.
