Latest squares quilt finished and a run-about

IMG_4428

This quilt is 54 inches square and finished.   It is now in the laundry room waiting to be washed and then will be put in the charity pile.    It seems there are so many requests end of summer that I like to get ahead.

And the dentist and the ophthalmologist are now behind me.   Yes, I get to go back and have a couple small fillings in June, but the eyes are no longer swollen and the eyesight is 20/30 in one eye and reading distance in the other.   So now I’m a happy camper.

And just to have a bit of fun, these two decided to go investigate the neighborhood today.  They got about 1/2 mile away when a neighbor called.  They love the game “catch me if you can”.   But fortunately that doesn’t last too long, and they are ready to get into the car and come home.

A play day?

I started my morning by announcing to DH that I needed a day to play and wasn’t planning to do anything “because I had to”.    So the first thing I did was sweep all the non carpeted floors – because I wanted to, which made me feel better.

IMG_4425

After breakfast, I realized that all the stuff piled on the table and night stand was bothering me.  Therefore, that’s what I wanted to take care of – which I did. And which took me until time to go to the gym.  Now there is very little on the nightstand and these are organized.   Plus I now have a spinning area once again.   Somehow, papers and “things” get tossed on top of each other until I feel I have no room to breathe.   Still this was play because I didn’t have to do it – I wanted to.  And we have been in the car so much that neither of us wanted to go anywhere.

The class we attended at the gym was strength training with about 30 seniors.  It started out easy.   The others have been attending for some time.   We copied what the leader was doing – or tried to.  Apparently this will get better as our strength isn’t up there with the others.   So now, we have signed up for one day of yoga and two of this strength training (at 11am – which kills my day and maybe me.)   This was not on my “play” list – but was on his.  I keep thinking that someday I will learn to like exercise, but it still hasn’t happened.

After lunch, we rested while he read more James Harriot stories.  Those stories will never grow old.  We really just lazed around most of the afternoon which was very pleasant.  After supper, we put the animals to bed and look what I found when getting the hay.

Do you see her way up in the back.   I’m not too concerned since we no longer have a rooster.  Tomorrow is the dentist and the eye doctor, so we will be out all morning, have a late lunch and I always need a rest after the dentist.   I like the dentist as a person, but I so DISLIKE going to the dentist even for a cleaning.

Yoga and another quilt

Today we went to the senior yoga class at the nearby gym.  It was supposed to be easy and some of it was.   There were also many of the balance stretches that weren’t so easy for us.   So we decided we will go each Monday until they are easy.  Then we hurried home, had lunch and went to the chiropractor in Bellevue – think 60 minutes each way.

IMG_4419

Even so with good time management today, this quilt is now quilted.   It still needs trimming and a binding, which I can’t find.  That is the strangest thing, because I would think that orange would be easily seen, especially since I used it very recently.

A wintry day and a quilt

IMG_4418

IMG_4417

Now we don’t have Texas type hail, but we had a lot of our little hail today.   In fact, it happened twice, which is the first time I can remember that happening.   You can see the tiny little icicles on both the chair and on the deck behind it.   Just little tiny ice pieces, but it went on and on.   It was enough like winter that I spent some time in the studio, quilting.

This quilt is now quilted.  It still needs trimming, a label and binding.  I am delighted to have it off the machine.  By the end of the week, it should be finished.

I then started this quilt.  The back is sewn and the quilt is mounted.  However, there was a programming error and I ended up removing all the stitching that I put in.  What takes 10 minutes to put in, will take two hours to remove.   It was very helpful that DH was willing to read some of James Harriot as I picked stitches out.   That was an excellent place to quit for the day.

Socks, etc.

IMG_4401

This is the last you will see of these socks this week.   I’m getting tired of them, though I’m about half way to the toe, so they will find a back burner for awhile.

IMG_4400

These are the peppers that will be going out to the hoop house tomorrow.   I forgot to green peppers, so I’ll have to purchase some plants.   These seeds are from peppers we ate.

And just so you will get an idea of how relaxing this environment is for some,  enjoy this.

Frogging and a guest

20160420_170611_1461197172755

There was a good bit of frogging on my socks today, so I thought I’d share my friend’s work with you.   Mary came with her knitting for a lovely visit.   She is making this sweater for her aunt in 100% baby alpaca.   It is wonderfully soft. imagejpeg_0

She is a beautiful knitter as well as her other skills.   This is the point at which she left here to return home.

The second eye

I’m done with the surgery.   Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers.  Most of today was spent resting.   And tomorrow I expect the blurring to clear up by evening.   I am ever so glad to have this over.   Now life can move onward.

faded blue socks and salads

IMG_4391

Since my eyes still aren’t cooperating enough to do much sewing, I’m still working on knitting and gardening.    This is Elan’s  “Sock it to me” color puzzle.   I am using #2 needles and the pattern is K6, P2.

IMG_4390

I keep seeing photos of salads in pint jars.   So I made enough for us to last until Thursday or Friday, depending on how hungry we are.   It is nice chopping all the veggies at one time.  It surprised me how much salad can go into a pint.  We each had one for supper and my guess is there will be times we will share a salad, depending on how filling the main meal is.   In these jars, I started with a couple walnuts, then cuke (though I won’t expect a cuke to last more than 4 days), carrots, celery, red and orange peppers, cauliflower or broccoli with lettuce on top.  Then we just turned the jar over into our salad bowls and added dressing.   Oh, how convenient!   If you look up “salad in a jar” there are many ideas.

Tomorrow at 8, I will have surgery on the other eye.  Then in a month, they will check my vision and give me corrective lenses as needed.

For those of you in flooding Texas, our prayers are with you.    I know when you asked for our rain, this isn’t what you meant.  (It was 88 and beautiful here today)

Thinking of Mother

IMG_4386

It’s still 3 weeks until Mother’s Day, but I was pulling some pillows off the shelf and found these.   I’m not sure how many Mother made  – but I think she made one for each of the children (long before Joann’s had that size).   They are filled with goose down from her parents farm.  She also made the two long thin ones for in the car as well as the corduroy covered “U” shaped ones.    Somehow over the years I still have 3 of these pillows, but all the extra pillow cases have disappeared.

IMG_4389

I am very short on children’s prints – so did what she did – used what was here.   I noticed her pink and white stripe is actually part of an old sheet with the label still on it.

IMG_4388

This is another form of pillow she made.   It is a 6 x 7″ piece of foam, nearly the length of the door, covered with upholstery fabric.  It has a zipper on one side so it can be washed.   There are even welts on it.   She put these behind doors so door handles did not go through the wall.   I know there were several, and I am happy I did get one which brings back memories.

And for those of you interested in the little lamb, he is still being tube fed, but putting on weight.    His new mom is a older lab who has had several litters and loves cuddling him.    He looks very much like he will soon be on the bottle and placed in his forever home, where he will be able to eat the weeds under the grapes along with his new sheep friends.

Interesting creatures

Husbands are such interesting beings.   Often times one gets surprised.   For instance, we are trying to supplement this lamb.   DH comes and asks what he can do to help.   I said he could refill the 2 gallon bucket.   So he picked it up, promptly tripped over the 2×4 opening and the 2″ of water remaining in the bucket landed where I was sitting.   No one was injured, but we were both very surprised.   Ah, marriage is filled with such interesting moments, and the only thing one can do is laugh and know that life is a roller coaster of interesting happenings.

IMG_4381

The lamb is a fighter, but still quite dehydrated.   By this time, his ribs should not show.  His little tongue wants to go out the side of his mouth instead of forward under the teat or nipple.  He will get a tube feeding again tonight, which he very much hates, but it could make the difference for him.  May I repeat that teenagers of any species should not be trusted.   These teen moms were a bit young for this, but she is protecting him and doing her best.   Her body just wasn’t quite ready.

IMG_4378

This morning, daughter #3 and I went shopping.   We both needed – no wanted – items from Costco and elsewhere.    The guest room is shaping up.   Still needed are pictures and books and perhaps a lamp.   I think I’ll get a couple of my brother’s photographs for the wall.   They are incredible.

My prayer is for each of you to have a marvelous week end.
