Repositioned geese

One goose in particular would like to bite and stay attached to anyone entering his domain – meaning the back yard.   Apparently this is why.

Buy why did she/they put them down the fence line and then move over to the garden to start a new nest?    We absolutely cannot co-exist while she sets on the nest for a month.   So if we are to have a garden this year,  they must move.

P1000946 resettled eggs

They were moved and the eggs with them to the area where the bunnies lived this past winter.   There is a very shady side (where I put the straw and eggs) and the sunnier side.   It is a U shape and I’m guessing they will build a new nest on the sunny side.   But if she gives up that’s okay with me as well.   The main thing now is that we are once again safe and really they are safely enclosed as well.

Seam Ripper Day

I may have taken out more stitches than I put in today – at least it seemed that way.   Can you relate to any of the following?

I started an embroidery.  Then the machine jumped and I didn’t catch it right away, however,  I’m going to finish it and try something creative.

Then I did a practice buttonhole for my jacket which went great, but the real one didn’t.     I have now taken that out and decided this might be a day better spent doing something else.    So, after some chocolate and since I really want to end the day on a happy note, I’ll show you a quilt that I finished this past year and hung on the wall.   It’s bright colors cheer me each time I walk past it.

After church dinner

This is the photo I promised of a Jerusalem artichoke (sunchoke).   It is very knobby and this one still has lots of dirt attached.   Sometimes a knob has to be cut off to wash all the dirt.   I used them in the salad sliced thinly as “water chestnuts”  however, next week I plan to cook some as potatoes.

P1000938 sunchoke

Today we invited 5 guests for dinner to get to know them better.  We enjoyed Broccoli Quinoa, roasted cauliflower, roasted squash, corn,  tossed salad, zucchini bread, and regular whole wheat bread with hummus.  We didn’t have dessert as we rarely have room left after eating a good meal.

(DH was concerned that I not show the people as recognizable since I hadn’t asked for permission.  What is the rule on this?  Do you know?)

Beautiful and sunny

The day was lovely and the daffodils have started to open.   I love their sunny color.

 P1000935 first daffodils

I started my day by dropping my cell phone in water.   We dried it as much as we could and it still doesn’t want to work.  However, there were appointments so we spent a lot of the day going from place to place.  First DH had a Dr. appointment, then we went to get some sunchokes to plant (also called Jerusalem artichokes)

They are in the sunflower family and have a smaller flower.  “They look like small, knobbly  potatoes  but crunchier, sweeter and do have a slight taste of artichoke. They practically contain no starch, but plenty of inulin (not insulin), which becomes fructose when spuds are stored in the ground or refrigerated.  The humble sunchoke  is considered gourmet fare by many.  Raw, it’s an excellent substitute for water chestnuts in hot and spicy stir fries, or cooked in cream soups, broiled with sweet potatoes, or simply scrubbed and baked..” from  http://www.localharvest.org/sunchokes.jsp   I want to plant some because I have read they are great winter animal feed as well as being nutritious for humans.   And it is the end of planting season for them.   (I shall try to remember to get a photo tomorrow for you).

We stopped and picked up the animal clippers so bunnies can be clipped again, and made a visit to Panera Bread.   Then off to the phone company to get help with the phone. which ended up with me having a new phone.

P1000936 turned the heel

While the car was running, the knitting needles were also busy.    I have turned the heel and am now working on the foot of the sock.

Retirement and Socks

Today was the first real day of retirement for DH.   Some of today was spent discussing what adjustments will be made.   We just needed clarity on things like which days will be spent doing things we will do together – such as shopping and which will be at home.    He knows I will never run out of projects I want to do and he will work at getting projects he wants to do, though for the immediate future that may be lots of reading and the gym.

P1000918 mountain color socks

I was ready to start a new pair of socks and found this pair had a few inches knit.   It also had a pattern with it, but not the pattern that the socks were being knitted.  I’m not sure how that happened.    I undid a few rows to figure out the pattern and am now knitting them as my March pair of socks.  Since they are larger yarn and larger needles, they will go faster than the last socks.    I’m using “Mountain Colors  Golden Willow”  from Weavers Wool Quarters which is 100% worsted wool.

Retirement Lunch

No, I didn’t retire.   A wife and mother doesn’t  retire.   We love our work too much.

P1000875

P1000877

However DH(on the right in the first photo)  is retiring the day after tomorrow.   I was invited to the luncheon.  The man they  talked about and the innovative things he did for the aerospace industry and especially to help the engineers were all new to me.    According to the gentleman giving the talk, he has designed programs  that have helped the company be 5-10 years ahead of other aerospace companies.   Who knew?   He never talked about his work and I  am not  technically inclined so didn’t ask him about what he did.  Perhaps we both thought I wouldn’t understand all the technical stuff and that would be true – I just knew he worked as a programmer who worked with engineers and yes, I did know he had a nice title.

But the side I know is the husband and father, the provider and protector – the man who bristles when I call him a genius.   He considers himself just an ordinary man.    To me, it is very interesting how a person can live two such varied lives.   But that could also be because the issues are home are so very different from the issues at work.  And he handles the issues where he is while he is there.

And though I learned things about him that 51 years of marriage didn’t tell me,  it really wouldn’t have mattered if he hadn’t done all that, he is still the man I fell in love with all those years ago.

Friday Variety: Quilt, food, & dog

P1000849 quilt bound

The quilt has been bound and is ready for a child who might be cold.   It has a heavy batting and will be quite warm.

P1000854 sweet potato flour

I tried a new flour in the pancakes this morning.   I was told to use it straight across for wheat and it is gluten-free.  This is not an inexpensive flour. but there are times when one needs to have something for someone who is gluten intolerant and it is good to know what to use.  The pancakes were a bit thicker than I usually get from this recipe, but they were extremely delicious.

P1000859 potatoes done

A casserole is ready for tonight and one for tomorrow.   Bill says he’s never seen a potato he didn’t like and can’t ever get tired of them, which is good for me.

P1000852 lacey digging feet

Lacey is digging a cave.   It is on the hillside under the side deck.   So far, she has it deep enough, that when she is in it, you do not see her.   I think she is planning to have puppies there.  We have other plans.  As dirty as those feet look, as soon as they are dry, the “Teflon” dog will shed the dirt and get up looking as though she had never seen dirt.   I love that their whole coat does this.

I went to the doctor to have the stitches removed from my finger and he was very pleased with how it looked.

An incredible woman

This article is from  “MaryJamesFarm” a  magazine to which I just subscribed.    This magazine is for the woman with a Farm girl mind whether or not she actually lives on a farm or in a city apartment.  This issue has a variety of topics from cooking pasta and baking mini tarts to tool tips, other crafting and even beginning beekeeping.  There is a lot of variety.   I highly recommend you at least take a look at it.  This article is in the Feb-Mar 2014 issue.

Happy Valentine’s Day

The house was nearly ready for company tomorrow and the meal was ready to be heated etc. so I had about half an hour to  work on an embroidery project.

P1000828

OOPS!   One careless moment later cost me 5 hours of time as the machine needle broke trying to go through my finger, leaving a threaded eye in my finger.  It took the orthopedic hand specialist over 2 hours to get it out.

P1000833 finger needele

Therefore, I don’t have a new project to show you.    But I’ll find ways to work around it!  There will be new projects this coming week.   And I’m happy to report that so far this month, I’ve kept up with my walking goals.

Getting behind

P1000815 Blue sky

What an absolutely gorgeous day!    One would never guess that we had 3 1/2″ of snow on Sunday.   Today the ground is nearly dry.   It was a great day to have good weather,  as I had to restring some hot wire and will need to find about 900 feet to finish the job.

P1000818 hot wire box

P1000819 hot wire

Here is the power box already in place, but not hooked up to power. and a look at the wire I’m putting back up.   Things happen over the years.   How or where it went, I don’t know, but all the plastic wire seems to have vanished.

P1000817 Beau

Here is Beau who actually stays home and on the job.    Lacey is determined to spend time guarding the entire neighborhood instead of staying home and guarding her own family of animals.  And I am determined to thwart her efforts.   It’s a real tug of war.

P1000820 doll dress start

The grocery shopping did happen today (before Lacey escaped).   However, very little sewing happened.     I did start one doll dress, which I plan to finish tomorrow.  Tax work scheduled for today was postponed for a few days.   Maybe next week as I’m not real excited about doing it.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who gets sidetracked, and not always of my own doing.
