Lab Visit

P1010403 dr visit

This 4 hour glucose tolerance test had me really nervous as I remember having this test about 50+ years ago and it being nasty.  Of course many changes have happened in that time.   I think the worst part of it was that they also wanted us to take a tiny bit of blood each 15 minutes during that time and record the number on a glucometer.  No, they were not looking for diabetes, but apparently there are a number of other health concerns they can find by reading that test.   Anyway, it is done and in two weeks, I should know the results.

I took my knitting along, although, with having to lay it down every 15 minutes to take a snippet of blood, I didn’t get as far on these socks as I had hoped.   They are just straight stockinette stitch, so will have them as a car and waiting project.

Craftsy

Have you been to Craftsy, yet?   They have a multitude of classes on different topics.  They even have some mini-classes that are free so you can try their classes and see if you like them.    Look here for the list of freebies http://www.craftsy.com/classes/free?_ct=sbqii-wqbbuho-ikrdql&_ctp=free.

I have taken the pizza making one and just now enrolled in the one on knife skills.   I have also signed up for several that have been on sale and still have not finished all those classes, but am working on them.

Once you sign up for one of their classes, you can take it as many times as you want until you master the subject they are teaching.     I’m delighted with these classes as sometimes it takes me seeing something new a few times before I really retain it.     Class subject are on food, gardening, painting, drawing, sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.   I know I missed some, but I think you would enjoy having a look.

Easter and socks

Easter is the time of year, we think even more on what the Resurrection means to us.   This past month has been full of loss:  Planes, a mudslide, a ferry, a bus accident, and 3 extended family members gone.  I long for the time when this is over and we meet with our Lord to never part again.

Some of us went for a walk in the park this beautiful morning to get our steps in and to enjoy each other’s company.   Shaula, my DIL and my son, Darrin gave me these beautiful flowers.

Then we came home and  weeded in the greenhouse and my nephew came over to get some tomato starts .  Then it was time to feed the bees, dogs and us.

I did get this pair of socks done which makes the 4th pair this year.

March Socks

The mudslide near Darrington, WA was about 1 1/2 hours from here.  It was where my grandparents lived much of the time they were raising their younger children.    Many people are still missing and our prayer is that they were not there and since Darrington lost power for days, perhaps they just haven’t been able to report their whereabouts.   Our prayers are with those who have lost loved ones in this ordeal.

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Here is where you get to see my cooking mistakes as well as wonderful successes.    At lunch I failed to bake the wraps to crisp state BEFORE putting pizza toppings on them.    So we ate them folded over with a fork.   They still tasted good.     Tonight I crisped them (about 8 minutes in the oven) before putting the tostada toppings on and they were even better.

The past week has had it’s share of trauma and depression so I needed something really cheery with which to work.  This yarn somehow found it’s way into my yarn bin a few years ago.  I think it has been there for so long, because I didn’t really think I would wear these colors.  I don’t even remember buying the yarn.

However, because of  happy  colors, I pulled it out.  It is just so much fun to knit these sherbet colors, that I’m having trouble putting them down.   They look so much prettier knit than in the ball.   These socks are cheery and I will definitely be wearing them.   I am using a Christine Pike pattern which you can find by double clicking the red.

It’s a fairly easy pattern, so if you already knit socks you might want to give these a try.

Spinning

P1000675 hanson closer

The electric Hanson Spinner is wonderfully small and portable.  It is a dream to spin on and will go as fast or as slow as I wish.

P1000967 black angora

The black wool here is from one of the Angora rabbits.    It’s a bit tricky to spin as it doesn’t have the little hooks on it that wool fiber has.   So it needs to be spun thin and with lots of twist so that it will hold together.   After spinning, it will need to be plied with another spun fiber.   I’m thinking I’ll use either alpaca or wool as pure Angora is too warm for our area.

I was going to show you dog fur being spun, but it is hiding from me at the moment.

2014 Socks #2 finished!

I’m a bit hard on the toes of socks and these socks are 100% wool.   So I added a thin strand of 75% wool, 25% nylon along with the yarn I’m using, which will increase the wearing time on them.  It does make the toes a bit thicker.

This thin stranded yarn is made to add to toes and heels to prolong their wearability and can be obtained at knitting stores.

You can see how thin it is compared to the yarn I’m using

Retirement and Socks

Today was the first real day of retirement for DH.   Some of today was spent discussing what adjustments will be made.   We just needed clarity on things like which days will be spent doing things we will do together – such as shopping and which will be at home.    He knows I will never run out of projects I want to do and he will work at getting projects he wants to do, though for the immediate future that may be lots of reading and the gym.

P1000918 mountain color socks

I was ready to start a new pair of socks and found this pair had a few inches knit.   It also had a pattern with it, but not the pattern that the socks were being knitted.  I’m not sure how that happened.    I undid a few rows to figure out the pattern and am now knitting them as my March pair of socks.  Since they are larger yarn and larger needles, they will go faster than the last socks.    I’m using “Mountain Colors  Golden Willow”  from Weavers Wool Quarters which is 100% worsted wool.

Striped sock finish

P1000836 striped socks

At last – the socks that did not want to be finished are finished except for the bind off.  I’m wanting to use “Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bindoff”  which is new to me, so will finish them when I have had time to learn it in a day or two.   Other than that the pair is finished.  A normal pair of socks will average about 18 0 20 hours for the pair.   This pair took a lot longer, since the pattern wasn’t long enough in the foot and I didn’t realize that until I had turned the heel.  Then about 4 inches had to come out.   So the socks were set aside for awhile.  I plan to  finish the bind off before week’s end.

Knitting lifeline

Remember the lifeline I put in the socks for “just in case” I needed to back up.   After knitting another inch and a half plus, I gave up – they were going to be too short.  I like my socks to fit.   So I ripped back a couple inches, back to the lifeline which I was so very glad to have put in there.   It saved me from ripping out the entire sock and starting over.  I went to the knitting group who was doing that sock as a knit-a-long and have asked what could have gone wrong.   So socks are on hold until I hear from someone who has successfully done them.    They have become ufos for now.   Just in case you aren’t familiar with that term, a “ufo” is an “unfinished object”.     In the quilting world, they are called either “ufos” or “pigs” which is “project in grocery sacks”.
