Red varigated summer socks

IMG_4674We get venison scraps in the fall for our dogs.  They come packaged in the large banana boxes with 40-50# of meat in a box, frozen.   So when we have room for separate packages in the “dog” freezer, we thaw it out and repackage it into daily portions.   This was one of the morning chores today.

IMG_4677

When that was done, I started another pair of short summer socks, because after counting, I need at least another 5 pair for this summer.  One should not have to wash more than once a week and then sometimes, it is a tad longer.   So rummaging through the scraps, I like this variegated red yarn and had this other yarn that had some of the reds along with whites and blues.   I took time to go to the dentist and when I returned, I definitely needed something to sit and do.  I have just finished the heel and picked up the instep heel.  If this isn’t enough yarn (after weighing), I’ll look for another solid to go with them.  Or maybe the blue-gray and white that I have would work.

How many of you are now knitting socks – even summer socks?  And how many of you are mixing the yarn left from other socks to make a new pair?  I’d like to think that I have company.

A Barn Door

IMG_4620

I am so excited about getting this barn door.   It will make life  when I need to work with the sheep.   They won’t be able to escape their pen when trying to get one in.     We were going to put up a new small barn, but we would have had to ask for a variance and then it would have cost more money than we wanted to spend.    So after much thought, we have cleaned this old aviary out and had this door made.   We will put in 3 lambing stall across the back a gate across the outside sleeping area and I will be a very happy person.   And so will DH since it is so much less expensive.

IMG_4622

These socks are finished.  I got a little carried away and went to far on the toes, but I’m not going to take them apart as it doesn’t bother me when they are on my foot.   So you can see in this photo, the two pair of short socks and one pair of regular socks from which I took the leftover to make this short pair.  (ok, the lights are bad today)

And did I mention we picked up enough fertilizer for the next two years.   The store had what we like to use and so often I can’t find it, that we just put in a supply.

A new quilt starts

IMG_4594These are the big pieces of the new Daffodil quilt.   There are many small pieces that will fill in between the major pieces.   Today I cut it out and barely started sewing as you can see.

On days when they forage the other side of the road and around the house, this is what they do 5 minutes before feeding time.   They mill around and look through the sliding glass doors to let me know the time.

Here is my 90-year young aunt showing off her birthday quilt.   She was so delighted, I was happy to have made it for her.

It seems I can go hard for 2-3 days and then I need a slower day – is that normal?

Bed, bath and Beyond trip

IMG_4568A threadbare sheet which has been replaced

IMG_4559with a set of this color (actual color is more champagne).   I do not like buying sheets, so until they give up, we keep using them.   When they give up, they get repurposed.

IMG_4567Why is it when one finishes off rooms, they just don’t get totally finished.   At least this happens at our house.   So today, we purchased switch covers for 3 rooms.  It really does make the rooms look better.   We were short these 2 screws, which we intend to pick up tomorrow.

IMG_4565This is a lamp my father made in the late 1930s.   Somehow, the finial was lost in moves

IMG_4566

so today, that was replaced and it is once again a working lamp.

IMG_4561I like to wipe my feet right before getting into bed (maybe because there is always dust or sand or ??).   So I purchased a small rug to go on either side of the guest bed.

IMG_4560And a nice little waste basket to complete the basic furnishings of this room.

IMG_4564Then there was a little matter of towels and a rug for the bathroom.  Again I used blue.   Ewalda, I’m ready for you with your favorite color – blue.

No we did not get to everything on the list done.   We did retrieve the sewing machine and with my birthday coupon, I got 3 packages of needles, which I can always use.  The big garden was fertilized, but the greenhouse did not get my attention except to pick a large bowl of greens.   They are crisping now and tomorrow morning, I will clean them again.    Parsley, cantaloupe, and sweet Williams were put in the seed starting tray.

The chairs will be picked up Friday as we have to go over there for an eye exam, the alpacas are going back to the 4H area tomorrow, and  I will mop the entertainment room/kitchen floor.   I should have time to fertilize and water the hoop house. Then I have a dinner to put together and cleaning the kitchen after I make the food.  Mid afternoon, it is off to the airport to get my brother who will be visiting from Florida for 2 days.     However, sewing will have to wait until Wednesday, or Thursday or Friday, after he leaves.

Yes, we did Yoga this morning and walked my 10,000 daily steps as well.   So I should sleep well tonight.

Circus quilt and lamb update

IMG_4495Applique goes very slowly, so this much is done.   Will work on the other blocks next week.

IMG_4492This is the quinoa salad for Mother’s day lunch.  It has tomatoes, broccoli, orange pepper and seasonings.

IMG_4489Aren’t they just the cutest little lambs.

IMG_4490

Mom is very black and dad is all white.   So I don’t know from where these spots came, but sometimes we don’t know everything in their background.

IMG_4494They were born last Sunday and will be nursing for some time yet, however, they were eager to try the weeds that I gave mom.  They are so tiny that I need to fix an outdoor place they and mom can get some greens where they don’t get run over by the big sheep.

In the Kitchen

No photos today as I make a vegetable soup from what I found in the refrigerator.    Then I made a bulgur wheat dish with miso for flavoring.   It doesn’t look like much, but it tastes good.  I made cashew milk and cereal for breakfasts.   We make steel cut oats for 3 days at a time and then just heat them.   I have the  Quinoa cooling to make a salad for Sunday.

In between, I supervised some yard work and did research on AI on sheep.   It turns out that it is much more difficult than on cattle.   There is also the expensive proposition of bringing in the semen and all the paperwork that involves.   After talking to Washington State University, it doesn’t look like something I can afford.

IMG_4486

So near the end of the day, I decided that I needed something fun and started this dish cloth.   The yarn is pure Peruvian prime cotton from Juniper Moon Farms.  It’s a simple K and P pattern from Janet Nogle

Birthday

Now that I have arrived at the 3/4 century mark, I am middle-aged.  I have so very many blessings for which to be thankful—in fact, too many to mention and then I have all of you as friends.    I am very VERY blessed.

We didn’t do much before noon.   Then DH wanted to take me out to lunch so did that.   When we came back, I decided to get some of this applique done.   I can’t find the block I showed you last month, but these are the ones I have done this week.   There are a total of 9.

And this is what happens when supper time is at 6:30 and you are still getting the dog food ready at 6:35.   I can assure you that animals arrive having little clocks inside those bodies.IMG_4480

Sun and another giraffe quilt

IMG_4466This was our view as we ate lunch outdoors today.   The weather was beautiful!  The extra dark “bushes” are really nettles that the sheep won’t eat, so we will have to weed whack them.

IMG_4467

I’m having a bit of trouble pulling myself away from the new babies.  They are just too tiny and cute and spots are developing on them, which was unexpected.

IMG_4468We went to Yoga this morning, but I did get this quilt finished this afternoon.   It is small – only about 38″ square.   I mostly did stitch in the ditch on the straight lines and added a few clouds.

The May day gift I received this morning was these two darling little ewe lambs.   They are so tiny, but then so is their mother, weighing about 50#   Dad weighs is a much larger sheep

I am so far behind my goals, but I’m going to blame it on surgeries – both foot and eye and now it’s gardening time.   It may be that I don’t catch up this year.   And if I don’t, that’s okay.   Without goals, I get nothing done.

Latest squares quilt finished and a run-about

IMG_4428

This quilt is 54 inches square and finished.   It is now in the laundry room waiting to be washed and then will be put in the charity pile.    It seems there are so many requests end of summer that I like to get ahead.

And the dentist and the ophthalmologist are now behind me.   Yes, I get to go back and have a couple small fillings in June, but the eyes are no longer swollen and the eyesight is 20/30 in one eye and reading distance in the other.   So now I’m a happy camper.

IMG_4146

And just to have a bit of fun, these two decided to go investigate the neighborhood today.  They got about 1/2 mile away when a neighbor called.  They love the game “catch me if you can”.   But fortunately that doesn’t last too long, and they are ready to get into the car and come home.
