Cooking and Cleaning

IMG_3961 IMG_3962 IMG_3963I was looking for something else, but this is what I found.  Somehow, they were put in a tub and the tub was put on a shelf and though I knew I had them, I didn’t know where.  I don’t even remember how old they are.   The giraffe is the only one open so far and the pattern date is 2002, although, it probably was  purchased in a later year. They are kits,  so the fabric is with them.   They are reasonably small – the giraffes are 25 x 23, the owls are 36 x 42 – and the elephants 25 x 33    I may just make each of them into a baby quilt.   The instructions are a bit scarce and the giraffe pattern is only of the three giraffes, but they include fabric to make legs, hooves, and faces.   Too bad, they didn’t create the pattern that way.  These will be next on my list, if only to get them done and out of a box.  I can at least get them to the flimsy state, which is where I seem to be stopping this year.  Maybe that’s a good thing as I’m supposed to be able to see better after the April cataract surgery.

The rest of my day was spent at the gym, making a lasagna, washing clothes, and cleaning house.   Yes, I cleaned the house, but not the studio.   It’s nearly time for a deep spring cleaning and since I no longer climb step stools, I have a younger friend that will help me at that point.   Do you take everything out of your cupboards and closets, and clean and do all the woodwork as well?   I like to get that all done at one time.  Then I feel I can garden and enjoy the summer without that hanging over my head.  And this weekend, I will try to start the tomatoes, greens and peppers.  No promises though.

Sock progress

IMG_3956

The heel is done and now I’m on the home stretch.

IMG_3953

After the doctor, we stopped at Whole Foods and each had a veggie burrito.   They really fill the shells up.   I have tried filling them like that and end up with a mess that doesn’t all fit.

IMG_3955

On the way home, we stopped in Renton

IMG_3957

as I needed a pair of size 5 needles to do these socks and I was limping along with one way to short and one waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.  I like a 24″ length to do the socks.  I’m not sure about this pattern, so am trying to follow their directions.

Finished owl flimsy

IMG_3950

This is the finished top.   I decided to redo the last owl upright as too many didn’t like that he was falling.   It is 36 x 40″.   The owls sit on a background that was cut 6 x 6.5″   I cut 6″ width of fabric twice = 1/3 yard.  Then I used width of fabric 6.5″ wide for each side and 3.5″ for the length between the columns.  There is a 3.5″ piece sewn on top of the column and then again on the bottom of each owl.  I With 42″ fabric, it worked out that  I could cut 3.25″ from each side and put it on the bottom of two of the owls and by cutting the 3.25″ off the middle two columns and sewing it together to place under the center column of owls, then using 4 widths of 2.25″ for the binding, it took 1.25 yards for the front and binding.   Another yard will do the backing, unless you are doing it on a quilting machine, in which case it will take a bit more.   The owls, etc are cut from scraps.  There are about 86 leaves, and are for the most part cut the same as the wing.   I used the width of 2 and the length of 1.8 zig zag on my machine.

IMG_3952

IMG_3951Then I received a bit of a happy surprise this afternoon.   Mary and her daughter, Tiffany (Tristan’s mom) came over to show him off.  He’s a bit unhappy as he had just seen the doctor.   He looks all boy to me.

Up to the heels and more

IMG_3949These socks are progressing nicely.   They will have a  contrast heel and toe.   I’m also happy it is an easy pattern, so I don’t have to think too hard.    The pattern I’m using is an internet find, called “Lace Socks” by Jacqueline W.  I am using an 8 ply wool made by PANDA.   The contrast for the heel and toe is by them as well, but 50% wool and 50% acrylic, so hopefully will wear well.

Today was a great day with some spinning, some sewing, some knitting and added to that, I took the machine to have it serviced and went to the Dr.   I feel like I accomplished much.   I’d love every day to be like this, but then I might not appreciate it as much.   Oh, and did I say the sun has been shinning today.

The owls

IMG_3947

Today, I cut and applied a lot of leaves on this little quilt.   I am using 2 wide and 1.8 length on the machine   I’m liking the way it is turning out, even if I am designing it as I go.  And yes, the last one is falling out of the tree.  I have two rows of appliqued leaves to go and then sew the quilt together.

While I wasn’t looking the machine decided to wrap thread around the wheel which ends up inside.   This is why I have contracts on my machines.  It takes  care of things I do inadvertently.  So tomorrow, the machine goes to the repair shop, which is why I need a back up machine.

A birthday party! and a bag

IMG_3923

IMG_3941

We had a terrific “open house” birthday party yesterday for DH.  I think there were about 20 of us and he was given a number of cards which are now in his special place to  be read periodically.  He loves his kids and his cards.  So it was a great time.  We had a token cake because most of us enjoy pie more.

I worked on the bag again for a bit today.   In fact, it is now completed!.   These are the front and back blocks that I chose to put on it – just keeping it simple, but I do love that owl.   The bag finished at 18 wide by 15 high by 7″ deep.   Here it is completed and very roomy with two large pockets on one side  and 3 on the other side.   They are about 9″ deep.  So now a 2005 project  is finished.   Yeah!!!!

If you would like this pattern – I am done with it.   Just let me know your name and address and the first request gets it.

2005 Kit

IMG_3913

Does purchasing this in 2005 mean that it’s vintage?    It’s a fairly small project and time to get it out of the sewing room.   I can only assume that the blocks that were supposed to be on the pockets became part of a quilt, so I will have to come up with a couple blocks for the pockets.  I did get everything cut out and the front pieces and the back pieces sewed together.

IMG_3910

Then I put batting on the back and drew some lines 2″ apart and sewed on them for the quilting.    So now I need to make blocks, put them on, and start the inside pockets

For the first half of this year, I’ll have fewer hours for handcrafts since I am taking treatments for 2 months to hopefully avoid knee surgery and then in April will have the cataract surgery.  That will be gardening time, and I am so hoping to be able have a garden.    Please be patient, even so. I will try to get some fun and informative things done to tell you about.

IMPORTANT:   For those of you who are over 65, check with your insurance to see if you can get a Silver Sneakers card.  If you can, many gyms will honor them and you can use the gym at no cost.   If you want training or classes, they are less expensive as well.

Sock new start

IMG_3909

I took this cuff out and started again.   It is a heavier wool and I needed to go up a size on the needles.  So I have just started the actual sock.   With the larger needles, they should get done faster, right?

Life seems to have its challenges.   Today, I had a 2 hour visit with the cataract surgeon and his crew.   They had several measurements that needed to be taken with fancy machinery.    I tentatively  made plans to have one eye done in March and one in April.   But after reading all their materials, I may just have both done in April so they can be done a week apart instead of a month apart.   I would love to hear from any of you that have had this done.   The word surgery is bad enough.  And very honestly, I’ve had enough of doctors, even though I am thankful they can make my life better.

Hawk knee socks

IMG_3907

Some things do not get done in a timely manner, but eventually they do get done.   So it was with these socks.  They are not as easy to do as they look, since they must be stretched some while sewing.   These socks are to be worn with boots and since we are in “Seahawk” land, what else would do but they needed little hawks.   I embroidered out the hawks and then appliqued them to the socks.

Rain and a celebration

IMG_3898IMG_3899

Today, I chose to go to a new doctor who works with trigenics with the thought of possibly getting back on my feet a big faster and to get rid of some knee pain.   The knee has been x-rayed and shows no signs of arthritis, but I twisted it last September and it is still swollen.  Today, he took more x-rays and did some manipulation.   Tomorrow, I go back after we see the effects of today’s work.   Unfortunately it is an hour away in good traffic time.    So today’s trip took the whole day.

Since DH went with me, we decided to celebrate our 53rd anniversary by going to lunch at this new-to-us restaurant in Bellevue.   We found good food and good prices.
