Color and sparkle

P1000676 shopping for dec

After all the Christmas decorations have been packed, January has seemed a bit colorless, so a trip to the dollar store was needed.   Just the bit of red Valentine decorations give the table a bit of sparkle and I’m ready for March as well.    There is even a big tulip for the next month.  But I think it will need company, so mid March I’ll go see what other spring “pretties” they have.   It really doesn’t take much to brighten a room.

P1000671 dump trip

The sun was shining and the weather in the 40s so time to get some outside chores taken care of.   How do you like my farm wagon?   DH doesn’t want a truck, so this is my “truck”.  This is the second garbage load (no home pickup)  which was not as full as the first.    Then there was the recycling trip.   The car DID get a workout today.  It’s great to have that task done for a few months.

The rabbits all got their worming and trimmings.   They are good to go for another month except for one who needs a full cut.

Under water in paper

P1000651 Kati at the parkAfter a lovely afternoon walk in the park today with our youngest daughter and her husband, we came back home to reality this evening.

P1000666 piles of mailDo you have piles like this of mail that must be addressed?

P1000667 piles of magazinesOr a magazine pile like this including seed catalogs that you want to look at?

P1000668 February calendarIn January, I thought I would just make a list of what I wanted to accomplish this month.   It didn’t work for me.  I wasted time because it seemed like there was still plenty of month left.   Here I am now on the last week and know that I could have done more if I had scheduled it.

For me what works best is taking  a calendar page like this and detail which days I plan to do which items, which is what I’ve done in years past.     No, I don’t get it all done everyday, because I always think that I can do more than I can.  However, I do get the important things done as well as a lot more that I want to do and I do not stress if something doesn’t get done, I just add it to another month.   So tomorrow, I will sit down and make out a menu for the following month as well as fill out this February page of projects I’d like to get done.  Both the menu and the items to do can be altered, but at least I have a guide that keeps me on track.

Sweatshirt to jacket basic tutorial

P1000632 afternoon sunThe sun was attempting to come through the fog as I sit down to write this.   The shadows are rather interesting.

REMODEL: supplies needed:   a sweatshirt and 1″ matching grograin ribbon twice the length of the front of the shirt

P1000628 price tag

 P1000630 grograin ribbon

This is a very basic sweatshirt remodel.   I often wear an open sweatshirt as a jacket and when I find them a pullover like this for $3.oo,  I am sure to buy some.

P1000622 finding center frontThe first thing to do is find the center front.   Pin the shoulders together and then the bottom side seam.   Make sure the underarm seams match as well.   Take and fold it so the center front is nearest you and pin up the front.

P1000623 marking cf with pins

Open the shirt  and draw a chalk line using a ruler between the pins,  after the pins are removed, connect the line.P1000625 cf cjhalk line

At the sewing machine, sew about 1/8th inch down each side of the line.   This is your cutting line and the stitching reinforces the shirt so it doesn’t ravel.   P1000629 cutting openPut something between the front and back of the shirt so it doesn’t accidentally get cut all the way through.   Cut through the chalk line.P1000633 dbl check ribbonMeasure the grograin ribbon leaving a half an inch both top and bottom to turn under.   P1000635 starting the endSew the grograin ribbon to the front side of the shirt with a 1/4″ seam.  Turn the top 1/2″ and the bottom 1/2″ up toward you so it will be inside when you turn the ribbon Do this to both sides.   You may need stiletto or orange stick to get it started as it is rather thick.P1000639 extra tab

P1000642 sewing the ribbon 2

Turn this to the inside of the shirt.  Roll the shirt under so the shirt fabric is on the roll.   From the back side, sew 1/4″ from the open side of the ribbon, top to bottom.

P1000645 finished front.

Now you have a very plain jacket and another time we will go into how you might want to decorate it with embroidery, applique, lace, ribbons, different necklines, etc.  There are Just so many ways to have fun with this shirt.   You can many and they will all look different.

Have fun playing with different ideas.

Basket quilt blocks

P1000619 basket blocks finished I did get 3 more blocks finished two days ago, two yesterday.  and finished the last two today.     These last two were definitely more time-consuming.    I see the 4th block still needs a handle, which will be hand appliqued on.
What to do with all the space between the blocks.   I could make other blocks to fit there,  or I could put solid squares in there and fill it with quilting.     For now I think I’ll leave it on the board as it is and see if it will tell me what it wants.     There are other tasks waiting their turn while I think.

Suggestions as to what might look good are welcome.

JANUARY sew-fun

 P1000616 Sue Piehler - teacher

Today I thought it would be fun to share with you a bit of the Sew Fun club.   Sue was the presenter and made several of the items shown.    There were many more items, this is just a sample of what we enjoyed.

P1000618 Modern Blossoms bookThe blue and white quilt is from the book “Designs Modern Blossoms, which has embroidery designs as well as patterns.  They are exceptionally easy to make with variations that make it your own.

P1000615 baby fiesta quiltP1000614 Oh Baby squares quilt

Two quilts from the book “Oh Baby”.   They are both bright and cheerful as well as easy to make.

P1000613 3 fellows on a pillowThese fellows on the “Winter Bench Pillow” are just plain cute.   The pattern has instructions to make the long pillow and the designer is making seasonal patterns so that one can use it all year long.

P1000617 robe from and Sew to Bed

The last pattern I took a photo of to show you is from the book “And Sew to Bed” which has pajamas, robes, cosmetic bags and other items.    The pattern robe and PJ patterns are for children and adults.   The book also has several other patterns for nighties.

Thinking of what you might like to see and then sharing it with you was fun.   Would you also be interested in some of the recipes we use on a plant based diet?

Chicken antics

P1000601 fountain

P1000604 eggs behind fountainI thought you  might enjoy seeing what the chickens are up to.  Most of the chickens use the boxes in the hen house, but since the chickens are free to roam, some have decided the front porch, behind the mini waterfall is a great hiding place.   I don’t know if they will be happy here when we have the pump replaced.  But for now, it looks like they are happy.

Greenhouse Issues

 P1000585 greenhouse rip

January was very windy and cold.   The left front ripped off the greenhouse and our son-in-law, Zach,  helped put up temporary plastic.   A couple of weeks later, the right front  ripped off.

P1000587 greenhouse front open

It has now been properly repaired.   Apparently, the front had not been built to have the air flow between the two layers of plastic.

P1000608 finished coldframe

We live in NW Washington state, so we have never needed heat in the winter to keep plants from freezing and  have some foods like celery and greens in there throughout the winter.   Unfortunately my banana trees and some other plants did not endure the freezing weather.   Some of the winter hardy food is still good.

It is so much warmer inside during the day, that in another month, I can start the early plants out there.

Design wall Monday 1-20-14

My quilting ufos are in various stages.   The two quilts I finished this year, were finished tops which needed to be quilted and bound.  The one I pulled out today was mostly cut out at least a couple years ago.  Fortunately it wa s all packaged together with remaining fabric and pattern notes.

P1000598 baskets on design wall

There will be 9 blocks and then I need to decide how to put them together which could take as long as making them.   When the top is finished, it will probably go back to ufo status until I decide how to quilt it.
