A day out

IMG_2802

Today. Mary and I decided to have a day out.   We first went to Sew Fun at Quality Sewing and the photo above is of some of the items Lana Jones made to entice us to buy books and other items.   She is truly an artist and we enjoyed her tips and hints.   And to our surprise, we were each given a DVD of hints, embroidery patterns and other items for coming to the meeting.

Then it was off to Trader Joe’s for a very few items, followed by lunch at Panera’s.   Our next stop was Costco where we stocked up on dog treats and off to the post office to turn in the orange slip and pick up a package.  After that we went to Wal-Mart  where I bought a pre-quilted panel for a baby boy and she purchased flannel for various projects for the 5 babies that will soon be entering her world.    After that we were tired enough to come home and rest.

Laundry and hats

IMG_2708

Would you believe that a bolt of fleece, which is 8 yards, produces 136 of these little hats and YES, they are done.   That completes the fleece hats for this year.   They don’t collect them officially until September, but they are DONE

No photos, but also several loads of laundry were done and some tidying up,   Anytime I start feeling like I don’t want to do housework or laundry, I remember how many don’t have it to do.   That makes me realize it is a blessing to be able to do these mundane chores.

Did anyone make yesterday’s cookie recipe?

Tiny purple hats

IMG_2705

This is just a simple little quilt case.   I used about a yard of fabric, sewed side and bottom and made a casing around the top in case she wants to close it.  I added a used color grabber and 2 fresh ones, for her to use the first time she washes the quilt.   The used one is for her to see how much color they will attract.

IMG_2704

These little hats don’t take long per hat, so I was able to get another third done today.  I’m  interested to hear if any one of you is now making any type of little purple hats for the hospitals.

Know when to say no

IMG_2388

I spent a considerable amount to time dealing with the people who wanted the dog collars as well as working on the collars.   This morning, I cut all of them out – it took 90 minutes to cut the fabric, lining, and interior of all of them – 15 collars and 12 leashes.    Then I started sewing the leashes as they were fairly easy.   The machine was not cooperative as  it really needs to be serviced.    I gave up and called these people to tell them what the situation was.   Then I “kitted up” each collar with the accessories so that whoever when from here had part of the work done.    I am so glad I stopped when I did for the following reasons.

  •  There was no way that I could make a collar in 10 minutes as they expected,

.  I didn’t have the time to keep them informed on a daily basis.

The fabric had at some time come in contact with a smoker.

I  didn’t need ulcers over something I was doing to help someone.

Yes, they were unhappy their collars weren’t finished today and didn’t even bother with thanking us for the two finished.  But they did ask that when my machine was fixed, would I do collars and embroidery then.     I just told them, I couldn’t make promises for the future and we went our way feeling it was a good decision.

We stopped at the tomato place and picked up two more peppers and two more tomatoes.  Then we purchased some sheep feed and came home.

For the first time our new mommy brought her babies up from where she keeps them at night to introduce them to the rest of the flock.  She has been missing and we feared the coyotes had eaten her.   But the last 3 days she has had these little fellows on the pond.   If you look carefully, the one in the middle has 2 heads, making a total of 4  babies.    Spring is such fun!

Dog Collar and ear infection

dog collar

As promised, here is the Martingale dog collar we made yesterday.

A week and a half ago, I went to the doctor because my ear was popping as if I were in an airplane.   It was decided the ear had wax build up and she should remove it.   She sent a nurse in to do a wash, except that was not successful.   The nurse then decided she needed implements.   She came back with what looked like a dental pick and a tweezers.   Neither was successful so I was sent home with ear drops to use for 2 weeks.   After a week, my ear hurt enough to send me to urgent care when I got up.  They took the wax out carefully and told me that my ear was inflamed and gave me antibiotic to put in it.    What I learned from this was that I should have objected when the first nurse came with tools that didn’t belong in the ear.   That would have same me from the infection.   So BEWARE.

As well as helping daughter find an apartment, I’ve done a bit of knitting.

Yeah – it’s Friday!

IMG_2359

This lap quilt is only 40 x 44 because that is the size of left over batting that I had.   I just love it when something gets totally used.

IMG_2361

This afternoon Mary came over and we worked on getting this ancient industrial Singer sewing machine in working order.    We needed it to sew very heavy thread.   After a couple of hours of us talking kindly and messing with knobs – even downloaded an instruction manual, it now works beautifully.   We now have a dog collar finished of which I forgot to take a photo.   I also learned that I need to buy special oil as it has an oil tray, needles and a zipper foot.   So Monday I’ll drive up to Renton and acquire those items.

Remember the red fluff I showed awhile back?   It is slowly becoming yarn.

And we finally found a few minutes to start removing the maple tree forest that finds our berry and grape area just the perfect place to grow.

Globetrotting quilt on frame and an Izzy bag

IMG_2078

This is now all set up to quilt.    It is not started because I was blessed with a young woman who is interested in apprenticing with animal care and yard work.   We spent quite awhile together looking around at what we do here etc.    It is pure pleasure to find someone else who enjoys and wants to learn about the things that you are interested in.   I may just adopt her (lol)

And though I cannot show you the photos as they aren’t copy and paste, some of you may really enjoy these sites about Izzy MEIMassb.   She is a fantastic designer and teacher.   She goes into such detail that you can make the same beautiful items she shows.  I absolutely must make the bag soon.

Small Tissue holder – tutorial

IMG_1635This can be made to fit either sizes of the tissues now available.

IMG_1588

Start with three pieces of fabric, either 6 x 6 or 6 x 7.   You will need a back, middle, and front.   The thickness of the middle will depend on whether you want to do a bit of embroidery or machine quilting on it.   And if that is the case, I would make it an inch or two larger in each direction.  But the one I made is just simple, so I used a piece of sheet inside.

IMG_1598

On the 6″ sides, I put a piece of bias tape to enclose the edges.

IMG_1599

Then I folded it in half, found the center

IMG_1601

and folded each side into the center.   I used pins, but one could just press it.

IMG_1602

Using a half inch seam, sew, across the end, backstitching at each end and over the bias tape.

IMG_1604

Trim the edge beneath the bias tape and turn to the right side. Be sure to poke the corners out.IMG_1606If you prefer not to add the bias tape, you can layer them, outside face up, backside face down, and put the inside on top.   Sew down the 6″ side and turn to right, between the inside and outside pieces.  Top stitch 1/2″ from seam

IMG_1610

Then follow the other instructions.IMG_1635

I love this dress, so it is staying here for my doll who now will no longer have to be either without clothes or in a nightie.

A new nightie

IMG_1520

I haven’t made doll clothes for three months.   It’s time to think ahead.   So today I made this little nightgown.

I’m thinking tomorrow I should start going through the scrap box and cut some into squares since it is now over flowing onto the floor.
