Sewing and knitting

IMG_3832I’m testing a quilt that will be published in April.  It has a lot of applique and I’m learning to use my Scan N Cut with this.  But last night I ran out of this backing which is tacky on both sides and makes my life easier, so went over to my favorite store.   Guess what?  It was 30% off and I had a gift card as well.   I love deals like this!

IMG_3833

I spent some time on these and am down to the toes, so hoping I can finish this week.   This week and next also have a lot of appointments filling the days.

Time for scraps and discarding

IMG_3823

Time to use scraps again.   However do they multiply so rapidly.   There are probably enough scraps to make 20 lap quilts, so this is my start.  I still need another 4-6 rows, but I ran out of energy.   I’m just hoping these stay on the board until I get back to sewing them together.

IMG_3822

The other part of the day, I spent cleaning this area.   If it doesn’t all fit, then it is time to toss.   So some magazines and some yarn is moving out in addition to all the items that were moved to the area they belonged and the papers, catalogues, etc that I tossed.  Mother’s old sewing cabinet holds my spinning items and the two baskets on the right of the bookcase hold sock and other yarn that I plan to use in the near future.

Black and white blocks

IMG_3801

It’s finished!  It’s  27″ square, so a nice small table size.IMG_3800I placed on the back a block with the extra fabrics.  It is a pocket, and if I decide to pass it on, the particulars can be written on the black.IMG_3804You can kind of see the red on this block to get an idea how it was quilted.

Groceries – week 1 and more

I thought it might be interesting to actually track what we purchase each week this year and if it isn’t where we want it, then we can modify our purchasing habits next year.   I’m not sure if I should include eating out or not.  Maybe and then I’ll also know how much we splurge.

IMG_3790 This was Tuesday’s purchase since our Vitamix is not back from being repaired. $5.00

IMG_3797

Wednesday is senior day at the local grocery store, giving us 7% off the bill, so I obliged them.   Cauliflower was on sale – oh happy day!    I purchased 4 heads, plus the other groceries here.  $105.64

IMG_3812 Today is Azure co-op day.   $76.26.  The 2 gallons of honey I so much need did not come in on this order.   But there is more red cabbage, some turmeric and sunchokes that I will plant and some sweet potatoes.   Oh, and yes, frozen pizzas for when I just can’t cook.

We did eat out once this week at our favorite Mexican place  “Rio Blanco”   $26.00

Week 1:   26.00 eating out and  186.90 groceries.  That seems high to me, but let’s see happens the rest of the month.

CRASH:   DH decided to go to the store before bed – do I need to count his treats as well.   I suppose I should, but that added another 42.51, which would bring the total to $229.41 plus eating out

I did get some bread baked this morning which is half gone already.   And I’ve been working on a quilt that I’m testing but can’t show until they publish it in July.

Tumbling blocks and weekly organization

IMG_3788

I worked on these tumbling blocks today.   It is small – only 27″ square.  Since I wanted to quilt straight lines,  I could do it sitting at my domestic machine.   When I started it I wanted to do something in black and white.  The quilting is red, but can’t be seen unless up close and not at all on the photo.   I still have some hand work to do on it, so maybe I can get a better photo.

Prairie Moon is doing an organizing challenge this year, with which I’m going to try to keep up.  We get a week to accomplish each task.

“it’s time for our first task of 2016 — are you ready? We’re going to:  Deal with paper clutter”

If you double click on the red, you can read about it and join us.

Palette usage 2016

IMG_3782

This morning we received a light dusting of snow.   What a great excuse to sit and look out the window and knit.

IMG_3785I worked on these socks off and on throughout the day (it is rain now) and have progressed up to the heel, which makes me happy.

I am following Judy’s yardage stash reduction reports again this year.  My net usage last year was 241.22 yards.  This year the goal is 300 yards.   But I promise not to punish myself if I don’t reach it.  One must reach high to gain ground.   The expectations for finishes in January are low since I only count yardage once the quilt is complete.  At the top of this page, you will find a button to get to the page where the yardage use is recorded.   In that way, you don’t have to read it if it is boring to you.    This is only Jan 3 and I have neither bought or used fabric up to now.

I’d love to hear what some of the your goals are.   Mine are high, because I do have a lot of yardage and my children are threatening if there is a lot left when I go, that they will just bring in a dumpster.  But many of you do not have as much as resides here, so your goals will be much more modest.   Please comment and let us know what they are

Happy New Year 2016

IMG_3751

“A Knitter’s Gifts” by Denise at “Just Quiltin” has been resurrected.   I had planned to put fancy borders on it, but it is large enough without all the extra work.   It’s wanting to get  done so it can cuddle instead of being in a pile.

IMG_3752Today I did some finishing work and put small borders on it and now it will have to wait until I can stand on my leg long enough to get it quilted.   This should get done about the end of this month.   The surgery and having to use a walker is hampering me a wee bit.

IMG_3753

Some of the day was also spent looking at different projects for this year – as if I don’t have enough.   One of the things I want to do is go through books I have and make quilts out of them.  I will start with this book which is a Fons and Porter book sometime this month.

IMG_3754

This is the one I did 13 years ago from this book.   I made it in flannel and loved it so much I made it twice – both gifts.

“UpWords with Max Lucado”

I absolutely love these weekly messages. and today’s message     needs to be shared as it is a perfect message for this new year.   We all get bogged down thinking less of ourselves than God does.

“Unnoticed? Neglected? Ignored? Not even close—to how God sees you! If you’re feeling unnoticed and under-appreciated, take a look at how God sees you as recorded in 1 Peter 2:9: “You are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession.” Or how about this description from Isaiah 61:10:  “He has covered me with clothes of salvation and wrapped me with a coat of goodness, like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding, like a bride dressed in jewels.”

When your self-esteem sags—remember what you’re worth! Remember that you were bought with a price, not with something that ruins like gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ, the pure and perfect lamb. Remember that! Meditate on it! Focus on it! Allow God’s love to change the way you look at—you!”

Again, may you be blessed a wonderful 2016

For sewing the plan is 2 doll dresses per month, plus we need placemats for 10 months and I like a set of 4. My goal is to make them one month ahead of need.  So I will start these in February   I  plan to make a couple “Bendy Bags” and “run around  bags” as well as a bolts worth (about 130) of purple baby hats for the hospital.  Then there is a request for the microwave bowl holder for gifts.

I am doing the yahoo groups knit along wash cloth which is monthly.   They offer 2, but I’ll be happy to get one done each month.   I also have enough yarn to do at least 10 pair of socks.  If I can squeak them in here, I’d like to do a couple crocheted baby blankets as well.

So these are my 2016 craft goals.    What are yours?   I’d love to hear them.

QS Christmas party

Quality Sew Fun had their annual  Christmas party today and it was wonderful to get out of the house for awhile.  Basically they had a brunch and lots of questions that you received a ticket for having the right answer.   The tickets were in a drawing – no several drawings as they had many gifts.    It’s always nice to see faces you are familiar with even if one doesn’t know the name that attaches to it.    Then it was time for “show n tell” where we were able to “show off” what we’ve done.   Their were not as many participants as usual and what were there were difficult to photograph.   I took a giraffe quilt, which got the appropriate oohs, and ahhhs.

IMG_3665

Then DH, Mary, and I came home to relax and Mary and I made these two hats.    It was a fun and exhausting day and now the leg is up and resting.

Flower baskets are finished

IMG_3625

It has been a busy day, with a trip to Costco thrown in.   But I did get this quilt bound and am happy with the way it turned out.  Below is the back.
