Microwave bowl cozy

Our first microwave bowl holder is holding up well, but can only service one person at a time.    So it was time to make another holder.

IMG_4279Using the free pattern by “aquiltedpassion“, I cut two 10” squares from my cotton fabric (or for reversible, use 2 different pieces) and 2 pieces of cotton batting  a bit smaller.   This must be the Warm and Natural batting made for microwave use.   JoAnn’s carries it as do other stores.  Also use cotton thread as you do NOT want a microwave fire.

IMG_4280

Then sew the 4 darts in each piece and trim to 1/4″

IMG_4283

Trim corners and snip at the darts to help turn  Place the two bowls right side together and sew leaving a 3″ opening to turn.

IMG_4287Next topstitch around which also closes the opening through which you turned this.

And you have a fast and easy cozy for you bowl, which you can put into the microwave to hold your bowl while heating and then take to the table to eat the food.   They also make wonderful gifts.  They sell for 7.95 up on Ebay or Etsy.

Here is a video if that makes it easier for you to follow.

Frustration

I spent several hours over the last few days trying to get my quilting machine threaded to sew a good stitch and at this point, I think it needs service.    So with this frustration, I pulled out some of these squares.

IMG_4274

Remember all the 2.5 inch squares I cut out some time ago.  I’m not sure yet, how it will look, but it helped soothe the nerves to sew squares together.    I still have many scraps to cut into squares.   So eventually there will be more squares and they will turn into a quilt.

A little more

IMG_4228I found this trying to hide under some other items, so decided to finish it to the flimsy stage.   Even the borders were in the scrap pile since I had cut them for another quilt and changed my mind.   I think sometimes ufos get to be ufos when they are forgotten simply because something gets laid of top of them and they aren’t seen – like this one.

These are the pile of fabrics

and the pile of scraps left from this the latest quilt making episodes.  Sooner or later, I’ll have to take time to deal with them.  The rest of today was spent with appointments and on the road.

Here a little, there a little

IMG_4224The borders still need to be attached and at this point, all the pieces are just stuck down.   I still need to sew around each of these pieces and there are many of them.    But the story of my life these days, seems to be a bit of this and a bit of that until it is finished.    For several days, I was able to just put a few pieces on each day and the same thing is happening with knitting the socks.   I am mostly using time between appointments or when waiting for someone.    I told DH this morning that I need 4-5 consecutive hours to get the quilting machine going again.   Maybe soon.   Meanwhile, I will live with bits and pieces as things do get done that way.

Under the sea

IMG_4133

My sewing studio has learned to reproduce.    I have no idea from where this kit came.   It appears that somewhere in my distant past, I must have purchased it, but when and why, I have no idea.   It turned up in a box of projects I want to make someday.    When it will get finished is a question, but it has been started and so will be a project in the making this week.   I’m not ready to call it a ufo.

IMG_4132It starts with having to overlap two fabrics a bit and then cut a wavy line where they meet.   Take the two fabrics and now put right sides together.   Some of mine were a bit to wavy and more difficult to match the edges and stitch.   There are 5 more fish to add to the scene.

I’m still debating on whether yesterday’s project is finished or not.   I’m thinking of taking the border off and making it 3″, which would make the pillow top 17″ and then would fit a 16″ pillow form.   No decision yet, but these ideas hit me in the middle of the night when I’m sleeping.

Churn dash completed!

;IMG_4128The red and yellow are from my library of fabrics.   All the churn dash blocks are from some squares gifted me.    I was so happy to put them to good use.   And I am delighted this is now a completed flimsy.   I used the GO Churn Dash die to cut them.  That was really fast.   Now if I hadn’t had such a cough when I put them together, they would have taken half the time since I would have connected the right pieces together the first time.    But life has its up and downs.   Now I’m all better, and I probably should make another.

More “churn dash” and a gardener

IMG_4127

The bottom row is put together, so I just need to put all the other red sashing and black cornerstones on and then make a border or two.

IMG_4125

Meanwhile on the farm, my sons convinced me to hire someone to help get the garden in and the hoop house ready to plant.   I feel so behind this year.   We brought 14 bales of peat moss and 21 bags of all purpose sand home today in 4 trips to Lowes.   Our boxes were getting depleted from weeding and produce.   Seems whatever you take out, takes a bit of dirt with it and after a few crops, one needs to replenish the beds.    We still need to do something to lighten up the soil on our hillside beds – haven’t thought that one through yet.  There will be a good number of potatoes out there plus garlic and squash and cruciferous plants, which need room.   And I still have not started my plants.   That must happen this week!

Slow churn dashes

IMG_4115

I really like the way the golden red gives the quilt more life.  The cornerstones will either be darker green or black.

When one only gets a little time here and there in the sewing room, it certainly takes much longer to get a flimsy done.    But I’m hoping Sunday to be able to finish it.   Of course, having said that, something else will need doing, right?

Churn Dash

IMG_4104The quilt is sporting a few more blocks tonight.   Several were done and redone because when you aren’t up to par, neither is your brain.  Soon, though, all will be back to normal.

Spring? and Churn dash/Hole in Barn

IMG_4055[1]

and yes when the rain is this hard, it is this dark during the day

IMG_4083

Today, I saw daffodils starting to bloom and some of the early cherry trees, but it is so cold, windy and rainy, I wonder if it really is spring.   But then if March is to come in like a lion, she is doing what she should.

IMG_4100

There are now 9 of these “Hole in the Barn Door” also known as “church dash”, Shoo Fly and a number of other names.   http://www.quilting-in-america.com/churn-dash.html     I’m not sure how many there will be as I’m just using some fabric given me.   I made 4 that I have now unsewn because they didn’t fit with these blocks.  So will use a different fabric with each of them.
