Charity time

IMG_2621

I just realized it is nearly July and I must start now to get done the projects I want to finish for charity.    Besides I needed diversion from the quilt making.  So I pulled out this purple bolt, I purchased the day after Thanksgiving and started cutting the little purple hats for the hospital’s “purple hat” program.  There are 8 yards on a bolt which when cut 8.5″ high and 15″ wide will give 136 little hats.   All the 8.5″ strips are cut, and I have started cutting the 15″ widths.

Seahawks progress

IMG_2616

Still trying to decide if I want a 12 in the middle and or Seahawk’s logo.  This is just put together in rows and not yet pressed, so I can still make minor adjustments if necessary.  Lest you think I dreamed this up, let me give you the pattern information.  It is “Score” by Julie Luoma.  I have linked to it with the word score.  It would be a terrific quilt with any team.  And if you watch Joann’s you can often get the 60″ team fabric on sale.

In addition to this, it was photo day for the alpacas.   We are downsizing the animals at least for the rest of this year.

Replacing a worn part on a sock

IMG_2604A very tired worn pair of socks that I still enjoy wearing.   I decided they are worth salvaging,

IMG_2605

So I carefully cut the toe off and picked up the stitches, which have been semi felted with all the use.  They are now ready to re knit the toe.

IMG_2606

Then I went to look for the rest of the yarn.   It may be that the toe, gets put back on with a solid color.

IMG_2607

I called the Doctors office this morning for an appointment to check this replacement ankle that I have and they had an appointment in 2.5 hours.   Since it takes an hour and a half sometimes to get there, we quickly had lunch and left.

 IMG_2608

This was the view from our exam room.   Yes, I have to have the ankle replaced sometime before the end of the year, which means, I better make a list of what I need to get done before then and a list of what I want to have ready to use afterwards, like fiber for spinning and knitting yarns with patterns.   He says that I can’t place weight on the foot for 3 months, but with a wheel chair and a walker, I’ll get around.

Seahawks!

IMG_2601Early, I watered  everything except the strawberries, garlic and potatoes (DH does those in the evening.   Then we went to the farmer’s market, where we bought 2 more half flats of strawberries, some celery, yellow zucchini and tomatoes.  I do enjoy the farmer’s market, but so far this year, I have only found one farmer that is not using treated seeds.   I don’t need that insecticide in my body.

After lunch, I did some proof reading for my brother’s new book which will go to the printer this week.

IMG_2602

Yes, I know I haven’t finished either the table runner or the quilt, but I was anxious to get started on this new quilt .   Besides, my studio is cool, so afternoons are a wonderful time to be there.  I now have 50 of these triangle squares done.  I like doing parts of the quilt ahead, so when I come to that area, I can just sew them in place.

New red yarn

  IMG_2328

Remember this pile of fluffy red fiber?   It was bits and pieces of several different fibers carded with a main fiber.   So it has some angora, various types of wool and various colors.  I don’t know what else since I purchased it.  I’ve been spinning it – a bit at a time.

IMG_2354

First step was these singles plus more not shown.

IMG_2599

Then this 3 plied yarn.

IMG_2600

And now I have 250 plus yards of soft yarn which I hope will be sufficient for a scarf.

Table runner flimsy

IMG_2579

These tiny, fragrant flowers are blooming on a plant start that I got from mother years ago.   Do any of you know what it is?

IMG_2588

Instead of wiping down all the cabinets, I took a break to finish this picnic table runner flimsy.   I will tidy up all the extra threads and it goes into my quilting stack.

IMG_2582

This is Beau, hard at work.   He tells Lacey what the problem is with his various barks and she knows to chase down the invader or ignore him.   She is down there with the sheep.

Green baby blanket

IMG_2569

Finished at 30″ square, just waiting for the right baby.   I used most of a pound of Caron’s baby yarn.

Today was a cleaning day.  All the floors on the main floor are clean and tomorrow will be woodwork.   It would be so nice if these things would just stay clean.  But even if there weren’t people and pets living here, there would be dust.    I am thankful that I have these to clean, some don’t.

Table runner progress

IMG_2580 Progress is being made and next week, the plan is to finish the checkerboard around this table runner, put plain red borders around that and maybe,  maybe, even quilt it. I think I’ll put the quilt like this on hold for now, because I have another quilt that must get done by the end of the month.

Sloooooooow day

Today was slow.   We finished cleaning the last 20# of strawberries.   I took my daughter grocery shopping as she just moved into a new place.    She wanted to go to several places, which took more time.    I came home and we had a large salad for lunch and then rested for awhile.  We don’t have air conditioning and I think the heat slows us down.

IMG_2566

When it cooled off, we fertilized the tomatoes and what other plants are still alive in the hoop house.   It hasn’t done well, which I think is partly because we have had temperature issues and partly because with my knee issue, it has been semi-neglected.   I am just really happy we have a Sunday market that I can purchase products to fill in the gaps.  The tomatoes, however, are happy and have lots of little green tomatoes on them.   We should have a good crop.  The potatoes have died back, so I should go looking underground and see what is there.   We only planted about 20 feet for an early harvest.   The rest we planted outside and I am hoping they are doing better.

When one can’t get it all done, it’s best to just be thankful for what one can do.  There’s always next year, right?

STRAWBERRIES

IMG_2561

We bought 100# of strawberries this morning –  that’s 20 of these half flats and yes we’re a bit nuts.  However, it is Bill’s favorite fruit, so we like to have the good, local, organic ones available.

IMG_2562

This is a very large bowl and held 50# of the washed berries.

IMG_2563

Berries are stemmed and cut, ready for freezer bags.

IMG_2565

This is the last 20#     After 6 hours of processing berries, we ran out of steam.   There is still jam and syrup to make, but we may just put these in freezer bags tomorrow and do the jam when it’s cooler.    And by next summer, we will have forgotten how tiring the job was and do it again.   These berries are so much tastier than store berries.
