A day of cooking

IMG_2968

This morning, I grated potatoes that had been boiled yesterday, added seasonings, then put them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet.   At 400, I baked them for 20 minutes, flipped them, and did a bit over 10 minutes on the other side.   Delicious and no oil!.

I FOUND the recipe for the zucchini patties that DH likes so much.   It is in this cookbook by Barbara Watson.

IMG_2973   I made 2 batches of triple the recipe which made 6 dozen patties.   We should be good with zucchini patties the winter.  I don’t know what I’ll do with another big zucchini.  I may have to discover more recipes.IMG_2975  I did not have enough bread or bread crumbs to make the second batch, so used oats instead.   The patties are very good, but not as delicate as the ones with bread crumbs.   At least now I know that if we have to remove wheat again, we can still have these burgers.

Another dress and time

IMG_2966

She is so happy to have this new dress.  It has been in the process for awhile.  Today while waiting on the phone (3 hours session) with Carbonite, getting all my info back, I was able to finish it.    I have a box of shoes somewhere, but need to look for it.

Does it bother you that other people seem to value their time much more than yours?   I agreed to sign for the coop delivery for someone camping this week.  Two people were each supposed to pick theirs up at a designated time.   One did and the other came nearly 2 hours late.  Her excuse was she woke up late because she was canning peaches until 2 a.m.   It didn’t appear to bother her in the least that I was waiting there all that time for her to pick up her items.

Zucchini and shopping

IMG_2954

Not one, but two of these monsters were hidden in the garden.

IMG_2963

Since DH likes zucchini bread, I made 6 large loaves tonight after supper.   There is still enough grated zucchini for several batches of his favorite zuke patties, but I can’t find the recipe.   I know that it uses tofu and I’m thinking oats, but perhaps it was wheat because I haven’t made it since he was put on a gluten-free diet.   This summer he decided he was tired of that and didn’t think it made a difference, so went back to eating wheat.   Now I just need to find that recipe so I can make them and freeze a lot of them.

I started the day at the gym after breakfast, then came home, a quick clothing change and off to both of the Costco stores.   One is for merchants for resale and the other is the normal type of Costco.  It’s interesting how ideas and habits are passed down.   I know that we have stores available all winter long, but Mother came from a Dakota wheat farm, where that wasn’t the case.   They ate during the winter what they put up in the summer.  In turn she canned and put up most of what we ate during the winter.

Now, even though I don’t grow all our food, I still seem to be driven to have enough food on hand to get through the winter and in this case that means water as well, since when we lose power, we lose water.   Even then, in the winter,  I do go to the store for fresh salad items and other things I’d like, but could get along without.   So it was off to the Costco stores for about 3 hours of browsing and some buying.  (Don’t you love to look and see what new items are there).  There will be another trip or two before bad weather hits.  Then home to make dinner.

Too short

IMG_2955

Quilting was very challenging today.   Perhaps if I quilted a quilt every day, I might actually get good enough at this to enjoy it.   Today there were several challenges.   But the worst was that I did not measure correctly for the backing.   Fortunately, I have more fabric and I’m only doing one block at a time instead of moving across the entire row with one stitching.   Can you see that I am about a foot short – what’s up with that?   Because of how this is being quilted, I took it off the machine and will sew the additional fabric on before continuing.

IMG_2956

Here is the block I’m currently quilting and then I will go back and do the ones in between.

IMG_2957

So now, it looks like this with which I am happy.    Because a friend is coming over tomorrow that wants a quilt done, I decided to just quit early and get the floor swept and a couple smaller projects done, so we can use the cutting table.

IMG_2954

I have been bemoaning  the zucchini were so slow and DH wants zucchini bread.   Look what was very well hidden.   With this there will be several loaves in the freezer.

Market bag

IMG_2951

The market bag is finished and  very sturdy.   It will be a great gift for someone who likes to carry heavy items as it is a shoulder bag.   The top is white so no color will rub off on the garment being worn.   I used Lion Brand “Thick & Quick”   100% cotton and an “L” hook.   The pattern is on their website as well as on some of the balls of yarn.

IMG_2950

And the best thing today was the computer came home.   It did not need a new hard drive, but did have malware and some other “stuff” that needed to be removed.   I am so happy to have it home and because I didn’t have to get a new hard drive, I didn’t have to spend the entire day putting everything back on.

Lamb sitting and Spinning blue

IMG_2947

I’d like to introduce you to Juliette, a little French lamb.  She will be spending a couple weeks here or until her shepherdess can take her back to her own pasture, which thankfully was missed by the fires, but has tons of smoke.

The lovely blue roving has been spun and the next step will be to ply it.  Since I don’t have a project in mind, I’m not sure if I’ll go ahead and ply it now so it will be ready when needed or just put it away now until I need it.  Isn’t that how ufos are created?

IMG_2946

My prayer is for the firefighters in Eastern Washington and elsewhere that they will be kept safe during these trying times.   The last news I heard was they may have lost 5100 homes, but can’t go into the area and see for sure.   Winds were bad there yesterday.  Today was calmer.   Firefighters from Australia and New Zealand are joining in the fight as well as the National Guard.

Friday report

I have not finished any knitting this week, so my numbers have not changed.

Nor do I have anything to show for my day.   We spent 4.5 hours driving each way to a funeral for my uncle today – yes, I’m glad we did.  But It did make for a full  day.    I’m so glad tomorrow is a new day.   And just maybe we will be having a little sheep visiting us from the area that is on fire.    I hear she needs a temporary home.

The other piece of news that I have (without a photo) is that my Dr. is on extended emergency medical leave and I have to change to a different doctor to get my replacement ankle replaced.   The earliest appointment I could get was end of September, which means the surgery probably won’t happen until the end of the year.   The good is that I have time to get more sewing done before I get put off my feet for healing.   I’ll bet I can make my goal of 200 yards of fabric used this year.   And I can put together more things to do from a sitting position.    The garden will just have to wait.

Closet cleanout

IMG_2932 It’s difficult to take a good photo of the area under the stairs that I use as a storage closet.   But I certainly did get a lot of items stored in there.   And since I did most of it about 10-12 years ago, I didn’t know for sure what was there.   So Mary came over and we took everything out – EVERYTHING!  We spent the day going through mostly fibers, but some other things.   made a big stack for “freecycle”, another for Goodwill, a third for trash, another to work on in the immediate future and the last is fibers that I will do eventually, but there is no real rush . IMG_2933 The wool, I took samples of and put in a notebook along with a number on the tote, the alpaca, mohair, and angora are noted as such. IMG_2934 Though it’s difficult to tell from photos, this is now organized.   I know what is in each tote, and

 IMG_2936

this is part of what is going to freecycle.    There was also a stack like this of items going to a nursing home, trash and Goodwill

IMG_2937

And I found the missing dremmel and table.     And we uncovered an extra spinning wheel, which I will sell.    So the totes with organized fibers and all the totes with decorations for each of the holidays now are in that closet.  And stacked so I can easily get to the one I want.    I am so happy to have this done.

A finished fox flimsy

IMG_2931

This fox flimsy is now in one piece despite the fact that we spent too much of the day shopping for bathroom counter top, groceries and signing up at the gym.   It is infant size and  I think some baby boy will look adorable wrapped in this.   Oops, amazing what one sees in a photo.   Tomorrow, I will put the eye on that I missed.

PEACHES and a gift

IMG_2923

I  love good, fresh, sweet Red Haven peaches.   We brought home

40# yesterday and today after eating some and putting some in the refrigerator to eat fresh,

IMG_2928

I canned 40 pints.   As we open each jar during the winter, it will help to bring back summer memories.    Peckham pears will probably be the last of this summers canning.

IMG_2929

I received a surprise package in the mail.   Well, first it was surprise email asking for my address.   I don’t remember entering anything, but that’s okay, I’m very happy to receive these 4 balls of cotton yarn for dishcloths.   They are all new to me and oh, so soft.

IMG_2930

And she included pretty stitch markers – something I didn’t have.    It was fun opening these and will be fun using them.   Janet runs the yahoo monthly dishcloth group and maybe selects from members to send out such wonderful gifts.
