Spool soufflé quilt start

Beau enjoyed riding out to the meat market to get bones for the dogs this morning, then he “helped” me do some cleaning on one of the stalls.

Because I tired of the other quilt, I started this Spool Souffle quilt.  I had it partly cut out, so cut out the background today andsewed the background onto the sides.   And guess what!.  The top and bottom of the spools have 144 lovely triangles that I get to draw diagonals on.   Not happening today and tomorrow I have gym and cleaning the house.    Maybe I should start another quilt – no, maybe I should finish something started.

Just for fun, my brother sent this site for me to add to my blog so you could be entertained.  It is a knit village – very interesting.

2017 Recap and 2018 goals

2017 Recap:

Finished 3 pair of the 12 pair of socks that I kitted, ready to go.

Finished 29 quilts, 10 of which were ready for the quilting.   The other 19 were in early stages or not started.

I

I also made 2 bags and 2 pillows plus embroidered 4 sets of towels.   I embroidered a Hatched in Africa set each month for their challenge, two of which were jeans.

There were bowl cozies and pea pods.

Then there were the baby lambs and additional sheep and puppy.  I don’t want to forget there was a garden with canning and freezing.

Plus the hospital stays.   It appears to have been a very busy year.  But there were things I did not finish or even start, so they can become goals for the next year.

2018 goals:

I’m expecting much more “out of sewing area” activities.  My sister-in-law has Alzheimer’s and is near the end.  There will be many more lambs plus sheep activities including at least one fair where I will be showing them.  We are moving the garden to a more level spot this spring.  DH is needing more attention.  And there is a big wedding in California in April.   I have fewer flimsies, so most quilts still need much work.

Quilts to do:         Goal is 200 yards usage

  1. Mystery quilt:  Merry Mayhem  –  NY day mystery

  2. Mystery quilt:  “Scrappy friends” – NY day mystery

  3. Bonnie Hunter “On Ringo Lake”  – finished clue #1

  4. Daffodil flimsy – to quilt

  5. Roses flimsy – to quilt

  6. Teddy Bear picnic – to quilt

  7. Celebrate  flimsy – to quilt

  8. Bear paw quilt – large,  cut out

  9. All aboard – not started twin bed size

  10. Fish quilt – not started applique – large wall or lap quilt

  11. Tulip quilt – flimsy – needs quilting

  12. Sunbonnet Sue #4, have sue blocks, needs setting and quilting

  13. Bonnie Hunter 2012, needs to be finished for King size, quilted, etc.

  14. Baby Hono – I want to make a child size turtle quilt

  15. Finish all the paper piecing blocks and finish the wall hanging with them.

Socks:  I’ll keep working on my last year’s kits, since I only finished 1/4 of them.

Other goals:

  1. Learn Electric quilt

  2. Learn cutting machine

  3. Make 10 Alzheimer’s activity mats

  4. Try 2 new recipes a month

  5. Gym 2x week

  6. Make garden plan with plans for starting, fert, etc.

  7. Make hoop house plans as above

Obviously, I will come across items during the year that I will tuck into my weeks.

End of October projects

It has been a good month, a very good month.

I finished the end of October projects by getting these socks done and

embroidering these guest towels with cute little Hatched in Africa ladybugs.   They were a free download several years ago and I needed something quick and easy to gift.

I did get 19 of the 28 items done that I had on a list for the month plus much more work outside that wasn’t on the list.   So I’m a happy person.    The items that didn’t get finished will go onto the next month’s list.  I finished a quilt and some embroidery that was gifted.  I took care of paper messes and finished some wall hangings and I took a short vacation – all in one month.

Today was beautiful and I spent it using muscles that I didn’t even know existed.   But hay is coming this week and I needed to have areas cleaned for it.  Hopefully I will finish that tomorrow.   What is left, I need help doing.

Home again!

We are home again! and I won’t bore you with tons of photos, but maybe just a couple will be okay.

We missed her mother in this photo as she was in the kitchen serving more food.  I think daughter, Jen, took this photo.

There was so much food everywhere.   Her family (direct from Armenia) was delighted to meet us and fixed us a dinner feast.  Then the next night they put on this marvelous engagement party.   They prepared an incredible amount of various foods, as celebrating with food is extremely important.   And of course we had to try Armenia food (which was delicious) as well as American food prepared just for us.

Yes, I dropped those two stitches, but decided just to leave them until tomorrow when I was better rested.  Sometimes doing something when tired just makes a bigger mess.  But I wanted to show you that I really did some knitting on my travels.   And when rested, this will be an easy fix.

Vacation time

Leaving Seattle and some rain for

for somewhat sunnier skies in California, where we are veggin out.

or maybe not completely.   They came back from Costco and said “make this all fit in the refrigerator”   It is food for tomorrow night’s engagement party.

I have started a pair of socks.   I brought enough yarn to make two pair, but it seems I haven’t been knitting a lot.

Coats and shoes

Look how pretty those white coats show up.  Give them two weeks and they will no longer be white until washed again.

Today the coats that we took off yesterday were washed and marked with the size ready for wear next time. And we went shoe and boot shopping.   This is all we came home with.   Is it really necessary to have all those psychedelic colors on street shoes?   It was difficult to find comfortable shoes that were “plain”.   I utterly failed on the boots as I need something very “farm” practical that zips up.   Another day, I’ll look again.

I was going to make red socks, but since we’ll be doing some travel, I decided on something happy that would have an easy to remember pattern.   So this is what I have chosen.  I haven’t started them – only selected the pattern and yarn.   I made this yarn up last year in another pattern.  I absolutely love the way it wears and washes and dries in the regular wash.

We received word that an acquaintance in Santa Rose, CA was burned out yesterday in the “out of control” fires.   They had to leave with what was on their backs.  Two of their married children in the area, also lost their homes and everything inside.   Fires are so devastating because so many tangible memories are turned to ashes.  We are very thankful that all members of the families were able to get out safely.

Errands and food prep

Errands and food prep took my day.   As soon as my helpers got here this morning, I had them unload the 4’x6′ stall mats that I had purchased.  These are made from recycled tires and are they heavy!   Each weighs close to 100 pounds.  We put them down in the stalls which the former owner decided needed concrete.   It keeps the moisture and cold from coming up through the concrete.  That way our babies will stay a bit warmer when they are very young.

As soon as they were unloaded, I drove off to the feed store for a dozen bags of grain.   Home again and unloaded.  I took a brief half hour to make and serve lunch and went back to get the other stall mats.   That was a lot of driving around.

These little shell socks are finished.  I love them.   Plus this yarn is so good about being tossed in the washer and dryer.

I made a batch of tomato sauce (including processing) with the tomatoes and zucchini in the garden.  The string beans are cut and ready to cook.   There aren’t enough to run a canning batch, so I’ll just partially cook them and put them in the freezer.  There was a pound and a half of blueberries and another huge bowl of cucumbers wanting to turn into pickles, so tomorrow – maybe.   I have been sharing the zucchini and cucumbers as much as I can.  I really do love all the fresh food from the garden, but I think I just plant too many after a long winter.

The geese love their fresh drinking water.   Remember how small they were this spring.

End of July Garden and sock progress

This week, the garden has to catch up.   Our  youngest and her DH came over and I turned them loose in the hoop house.  So I will not have to deal with zucchini or cucumbers unless these missed some.   And that is okay with me.   It appears there are enough tomatoes to keep me making paste and sauce all week and there are still cucumbers and zucchini in the refrigerator.   So my plan this week is to catch up with using the produce.   And we have planted more lettuce this weekend.   The weather is promising 90-102 degree temperatures.   So we probably won’t be moving much mid to late in the day.   But we will be doing a lot of watering.

This morning (forgot to take photo)   I picked 9# of blueberries.   5# will fill a gallon Ziploc bag FULL.   I’m not as fast as I’d like to be as that took 2 hours.   My mind and body are not on the same page.   My mind has not connected with the fact that my body thinks it is older than 50.  So it often times runs way ahead of what the body is willing to do.  Next year maybe the blueberries will be higher on the plants and there won’t be so many at ground level.

Sock Progress has been slow, however, this afternoon I sat and knitted for a bit and turned the heel corner.  I like this particular pattern which is a 7 stitch repeat.  It is “Little Shell Socks” at http://www.knitting-and.com/knitlistgifts/2000/little-shell-socks.htmMy goal is to finish them before the end of August, maybe while enjoying the sun.

surveillance cameras

Surveillance cameras were on our shopping expedition today.   We looked at several, but did not make a decision.   We still need to figure out if our modem will reach to the barn which is about 150 feet away.   The barn is where we need the cameras.  Reading the pros and cons of people who have purchased them is educational as I am learning about things I would not have thought to ask.    If any of you has a system that works outside, I’d love to hear about it.

I’ve also been having “fun” with my wireless mouse.   It doesn’t want to work anymore.   After getting spoiled with it, the plug in mouse feels awkward.   I’m going to have to look for a solution to this as well

I did get some knitting done, but not much.
