Time to pay the piper

IMG_3873

It’s so easy to look back and see what the better path would have been.   So today, I paid for yesterday by sitting.   It just shouldn’t take so long to get back to par after a surgery.  Above are 3 sweet potatoes that I am hoping will send out runners I can plant.   If I wait until the seed houses have them in April, it will be too late to plant them in this area (Seattle).   So they are sitting on little toothpick legs and I am hoping for the bestIMG_3876Another wash cloth designed by Janet Nogle.  We were given about 9 rows a day and I was behind.   Janet finished the pattern yesterday.   However, sitting today gave me opportunity to catch up.IMG_3878I started these socks on #4 needles, but they are tight.  I need to buy some #5 needles and redo them.IMG_3869IMG_3850These are photos of this week’s groceries $32.89 and 34.95.    Plus we got a gallon of honey from the co-op for 50.50 which made 118.34 for this week.  We also ate out last week  $23. which I didn’t record and again this week $24.   So for this month groceries have been 305.24 and eating out has been $73.00.  And it’s going to get a lot worse since I’m needing lots of food for an open house for DH’s birthday next week end.

Hoop house activity

IMG_3450

Because I twisted my knee this summer and was unable to use it for a couple months, the gardens became wild.  This is how the 4 x 32 foot tomato/bean/pea row looked.

IMG_3489

And this is how it looks now.   We will put ground cloth on it until we want to plant in the early spring.

Winterizing the greenhouse

IMG_3447

Yes, except for the tree in the middle, the rest is weeds that grew due to my not getting out there when they were little.   September and most of October, they spent trying to see how much they could take over.   Now, I’ve been out there, moving them to the compost pile.   Does it count that I’ve started now?   I want to get the boxes weeded and covered so they’ll be ready to go in the spring, since I didn’t get winter crops in.

Now it’s time to get some strawberry jam made.   DH tells me he is out.

Rain, then sun and some knitting

IMG_3330

This is what rain can look like, though rarely does in this area.   Usually it is more of a drizzle, but yesterday, the rain gave all it had.

Since the sun was shinning today, we walked, then went to the feed store and purchased another 11 bags of grain (50# each) which should last a long time with just 4 sheep and a few ducks, etc.    Before we unloaded it into the garbage cans, we cleaned out the feed room.   There is a hot water tank under the counter and it makes the perfect mouse nesting place. nice and warm in the winter.   Now that is all cleaned out and there is quite a bit of mouse “candy” in there.   I don’t think they’ll eat all of that, but if they do, there is still half a package.   Next, we unloaded all the grain into the metal garbage pails and had lunch.

IMG_3333

After lunch, we worked awhile pulling out the rest of the vines, such as tomato, cucumber, and melon.   We felt we deserved a rest and knitting, so we are taking the rest of the day a bit slower.

Beets and cookies

IMG_3300

After my Wednesday time at the gym, I came home, made cookies and lunch.   Then I picked the rest of the beets in the garden.

IMG_3301

They are now cooked, but I ran out of energy to put them in the jars and actually can them, so that will happen tomorrow.

IMG_3303

The cookies I made were 1 cup of oatmeal to 1 very ripe banana.   Mash them together.  You may add nuts or chocolate chips, if you like, but don’t need to.   Bake 325 for 15 minutes.   They are terrific to have on hand after a workout or for that matter any other time.

I did get the fabric washed and dried for the sashing and the back of the patchwork quilt, but cutting will wait for another day after all the blocks are done.  Its seems I always plan to get more done than I do.

Back to quilting

IMG_3297

The quilts I had made earlier have been delivered to some of the people living at the Okanogan campground tent city for families who were burned out and had no where to go.    I understand that the Wenatchee group gave 80 and Spokane another 60.    However many more are needed and will be given to these people as soon as they are completed.   So I have started on my next set of quilts.       It seems patchwork is always welcome, so this is the one I started today.  I think I may want 30 of these blocks as they will measure 10″ finished.

IMG_3295

IMG_3294In addition to that the summer is over and it is getting colder and darker.   Today we took the shade cloth off the greenhouse and picked most of what was in it.  There are still some squash, celery, and beets.

Grapes, grapes and more grapes

IMG_3195

However, first I want to update you.  A friend and I went to a new to us church  yesterday and learned about the Hebrew New Year, Rosh Hashana, which was very interesting.  IMG_3196

At this Messianic Jewish church, they had a lovely “Ark of the Covenant” replica as well as an amazing Torah Scroll that survived the Holocaust.

IMG_3200

I  took the granola off the dehydrator this morning after breakfast, did a small amount of spinning.

IMG_3207

Then I decided to pick grapes.    I was surprised at the amount that were out there.   With what I picked on Friday, we had over 6 of these 4 gallon buckets of grapes.   This is the first year that we have had much of a harvest.   Last year, the chickens got them and then again this year, the chickens were busy with keeping the bugs out of the grapes and then reaping the reward.   Still there were more than enough for us.    So we have been cleaning and freezing and dehydrating grapes today – and maybe tomorrow as well.

More food prep

IMG_3188

I’m so glad that it is Friday and tomorrow is a day of rest.   God knew we would need one day a week to keep from wearing ourselves out.  Today, after gym, I went out and picked more grapes.   I will probably finish picking them on Sunday.   Maybe I’ll freeze them on trays so it will be easy to just take out what we want to use.   It will be so nice to have them in the freezer and we can just add them to our winter fruit salads.

IMG_3192

and here is another 14 quarts of potatoes canned.

IMG_3193

The pears look like they would like to wait several more days, which is okay with me.

IMG_3194

So I baked another 6 loaves of zucchini bread.  There is more zucchini shredded, but I’m debating whether to just freeze it that way or make up more patties.

My wish for each of you is one restful day and one productive day this weekend.   Enjoy your families.

Does this sound like your life.

Get up groggily, get breakfast on the table and then eat mine.   Still tired, but not enough to go back to bed, so sit down and spin wool for a bit.  After I catch my breath,IMG_3173

grate the two huge zucchini with plans to make bread, brownies, and patties for the freezer.

IMG_3175

It grated into 3+ gallons of zucchini.   I refrigerated that for later use.   Next I get out the jars and other canning supplies to can the potatoes.

IMG_3176About then DH would like to eat at his favorite local Mexican restaurant.   I had a large tostada with beans, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole.  We get back just in time for a conference call I agreed to attend.   Oops, lasted nearly 2 hours instead of one, and then another 1/2 hour phone call.   Wow it’s 3.30 and I haven’t accomplished much yet.

IMG_3182

14 quarts of potatoes..   The plan is to do another 14 quarts tomorrow plus the zucchini products.

IMG_3185

While I was waiting for the pressure canner to heat up, I went out to check the grapes which are small this year, but that’s probably because we didn’t know how to prune them   I am thrilled and delighted with the sweetness.   They are so wonderful.   I filled the bowl I took with me and will finish picking them tomorrow.

So I get to the end of my day and there were more things I wanted to get done than got done.  In fact, I feel as if I am swimming backwards.    If I could get going a bit sooner in the morning and not have phone conferences……………but then tomorrow  there is gym, then a drive out to get a loom someone wants to find a home for which I’m sure will consume 3 hours, then to finish picking the grapes and canning the potatoes.    There is no time in this schedule for housecleaning and gardening and so the garden suffers a lot and we won’t talk about the house.     Oh, and there are still carrots and beets,  to get done in the near future and applesauce after that.

Fox and raspberries

IMG_2961  I have about a quart that I picked tonight and maybe I ate that many while picking.   These will go into the freezer for winter eating.

IMG_2960My friend had car troubles so didn’t come to do her quilting today.   So I quilted the little foxes and will bind tomorrow (I hope).   I’m thinking these will be fun for someone who has lost their home to the fires.   I have a few other child quilts that I will also give.   The quilt that was too short yesterday is long enough today, but has not found  back to being loaded on the machine.
