Today’s Rodeo

IMG_4312

Sometimes, this place really and truly is a zoo.   Today, we had to give some of the sheep shots and others  got larger coats, which they need every 3 months.    We didn’t have enough coats the right size and so will order more and 4 still need to be sheared plus the alpacas.    And our ram has decided that at least one girl was missed and he should take care of her.

IMG_4310 IMG_4307 IMG_4303

But look at this heavenly wool.   It is a dream come true and hand spinners love it.  This and the enjoyment we have from watching the sheep make it so worth the little troubles.

IMG_4311

Before the rodeo, we had a couple strong helpers out here turning the garden beds, in which we hope to get the potatoes planted this week.   The garden is also getting vermiculite and possibly peat moss this year.   The weather report has sun through Saturday. which is good, as we are a bit behind.  We didn’t use most of these beds last year, so they had two years of growth on the weeds.  That was a huge mistake.   We should have at least covered the beds with mulch.

Cleaning

IMG_4289Do you remember these sweet potatoes that I put in water.   Today I was able to take the starts off them and put them in the water.   There are probably 12-15 starts in this jar

IMG_4290

Today, I mopped all the floors upstairs, then we went to our chiropractic appointment and to Whole Foods, where we wandered, looking for new products that didn’t have oil.   Now that is challenging.   We found some Engine 2 crackers and pizza crusts, but not much else.   However, since we were there and I am behind in starting seeds, we picked up some cauliflower, broccoli and other starts – about 1 in all.   Most started cups had about 4 starts in them if I am careful when I transplant.

Every so often, messes get to the point that I can no longer think.  Today, I was at that point.

IMG_4227

No more walking room, so they went on the cutting table and I mopped the studio floor as well.

IMG_4291

I can now walk through the room,

IMG_4292

However, I needed to take care of all these scraps in the boxes.

IMG_4293

Just as these weren’t all created in a day, they will not all get taken care of in a day.   I will leave the larger pieces by color, cut some of the smaller pieces into various squares and leave the strips for a strips quilt someday

Seed starting

IMG_4240

Finally, I’m getting around to starting seeds.  I am out of bell pepper and cauliflower seeds, so will get those this week.    But I did start a tray of marigolds and a try of alyssum plus cilantro, nasturtiums, heirloom tomatoes, endive, romaine, little gem lettuce, broccoli, celery water cress, red and white cabbage, beets, kale, cress, and Chinese cabbage.  Radishes and carrots need to be started in the ground in which they will grow.  Peas and potatoes are hoping to get into the outside garden on Friday.   As soon as the seedlings get about an inch high, they will be moved to give them more room.

IMG_4235We went to the feed store today to get a couple of these feeding troughs for the sheep.   We needed two troughs instead of the little dishes we had been using.   There are actually two in this photo with sheep surrounding each.   This is a much easier way to give them their grain.   Below are some photos of the babies.  They didn’t want to come in tonight – too fun in the sun.

An interesting day

IMG_4145Yesterday morning, I thought spring might be on the way.    Today, it definitely is not.

IMG_4146

IMG_4149

IMG_4220Here are 3 sheep photos.   This last one you can see one of the dogs with the big fluffy tail.   It appeared they rounded the sheep up and were counting them.    Of course, we don’t really know what was happening, except they touched noses, then the sheep wandered off to eat.

IMG_4222This has been a big project.  (I did hire help).  The boxes were moved a bit this winter and another trellis was built.   Then we had lost so much soil because over time as one pulls weeds or food out, a bit of soil comes out.    So we used 6 bales of peat moss, 18 bags of sand and 3.5 bales of perlite to fill all the boxes again.   This time the dirt is only on the bottom, so hopefully we won’t have the weed problem and the food will come out cleaner.   It’s the Mittleider method if you are interested.    So tomorrow, I absolutely  MUST start the veggies seeds so they can be transplanted and I also need to get this fertilized and thoroughly watered this week.  I’m a bit late, but the forecast is for freezing nights every night this week and rain through Wednesday.  Then if the forecast is correct we’ll get 3 days of sun or partial sun, then more rain.

We lost power for a couple hours today, so I did get a chance to sit and knit in front of the fireplace which was lovely.  The wind and rain were vicious.

More “churn dash” and a gardener

IMG_4127

The bottom row is put together, so I just need to put all the other red sashing and black cornerstones on and then make a border or two.

IMG_4125

Meanwhile on the farm, my sons convinced me to hire someone to help get the garden in and the hoop house ready to plant.   I feel so behind this year.   We brought 14 bales of peat moss and 21 bags of all purpose sand home today in 4 trips to Lowes.   Our boxes were getting depleted from weeding and produce.   Seems whatever you take out, takes a bit of dirt with it and after a few crops, one needs to replenish the beds.    We still need to do something to lighten up the soil on our hillside beds – haven’t thought that one through yet.  There will be a good number of potatoes out there plus garlic and squash and cruciferous plants, which need room.   And I still have not started my plants.   That must happen this week!

Socks and garden necessities

IMG_4105

Today, we decided that perhaps summer will come, so went to Lowe’s and purchased enough peat moss and sand to fill our hoop house boxes back to the top.   Over the years, as I’ve taken produce and weeds out, the quantity of the boxes has diminished.

IMG_4108

I also decided on another sock project.   Somehow my hands feel lonely without yarn in them.   Mostly, I’ve been spinning, but it is time for knitting again.    There is no particular pattern as I just knit 6, purl 2 on 64 stitches.  And since I didn’t easily find where they match, (still haven’t), I’m just making them “cousin” socks.   I’ll be wearing them, so it doesn’t really matter.

Spinning

IMG_4053This is hours upon hours upon hours of work though it doesn’t appear that way.   It is 2 plies of dog hair  -about 60% and 2 of sheep wool.   I’m not sure what I’ll make yet, but the yardage estimate is  285 yards if 4 ply.

Then I tool the flyer on my Hansen’s electric spinner apart and cleaned it thoroughly.   It is now ready to work again.

The frogs are in full chorus now – they started day before yesterday.   I love leaving the door open at night and listening to them.   However, that means it is time to start the early garden and I’m just not ready for that yet.   I need the earth to dry out some first.   I could work in the hoop house, but that takes energy as well.

A little gardening, a little canning, a little shopping

IMG_4018

I froze grapes in gallon bags last fall because I just didn’t have time or energy to make grapes then.  Also, I find the raisins easier to dehydrate once the grapes have been frozen and thawed.   So this morning I canned 6 pints of grape juice from the thawed raisins.

IMG_4019

After coming home from gym, I sold my first spinning wheel to a man who has taken one lesson on the same type of wheel.   It’s a good wheel and he should enjoy it.

After lunch, I went out and worked on one side in the greenhouse.   It’s amazing, even baby carrot seeds dropped last fall have started growing.   There were these carrots left in over winter.   They are a  bit short as I need to dig down farther to give them more good growing soil and less hardpan.  Not only were carrots starting to grow, but the weeds had a great start.   Tomorrow, I will put down the preplant nutrients and water well.   This weekend, I’ll start sow some cool weather crops and hopefully get some tomatoes and pepper seeds started in the house.   (Need more hours)

IMG_4023

We retrieved the sewing machine that had to be serviced and made a stop at Costco, which is rarely cheap.  We had $55.00 in  rebates off this, so that helped ay for the extra dog treats.   We should be good for another year of treats now.

I certainly don’t want to forget that Beau wants to be a house dog, and therefore has been climbing the fence.   That would be okay if we could trust him not to leave when the gate opens.   We can’t so he has to stay behind the fence.  He weighs about 120#, but fortunately walks well on a lead.  So, in the dark and driving rain, we ushered him into the quarters he shares with the sheep at night.  Now I wish you all  a good, restful night, knowing that tomorrow will have new challenges.

Exercise, spinning and gardening

I started the day with exercise and then a knee treatment.

IMG_3710  By 1 PM, I was ready for a rest.   I spun another 30 inches of roving (I tore the roving into 30″ lengths – just 28 more of this particular one to do at one a day).   When the roving is spun, I’ll ply it and look for a sweater pattern

Then to the greenhouse where I thought there might be some potatoes from last year that we missed.

IMG_3969

IMG_3967

This is what we found – about 1/3 bucket of potatoes and one single leek.   Enough for a couple meals.   There were a number of tiny potatoes, so we left them to grow new plants.  I need to get someone to dig the beds outside as I have about 50 potatoes with 6-8″ long sprouts that need to be planted.  Maybe what I need is a whole week of sun without appointments.

IMG_3962IMG_3961

I looked  again at working up these two kits and decided they need to go in a very back spot.   The designer gave all the patterns and fabrics, but not much in instructions.  And applique is not my favorite thing to do. Maybe when I get old………..I can drag them out again.

Meanwhile, I think tomorrow, I’ll go sign some legal documents, and by then it might be warm enough to go play in the dirt and I can get a few of these potatoes into the ground.   And I need to buy peas and get them started soon.

Cooking and Cleaning

IMG_3961 IMG_3962 IMG_3963I was looking for something else, but this is what I found.  Somehow, they were put in a tub and the tub was put on a shelf and though I knew I had them, I didn’t know where.  I don’t even remember how old they are.   The giraffe is the only one open so far and the pattern date is 2002, although, it probably was  purchased in a later year. They are kits,  so the fabric is with them.   They are reasonably small – the giraffes are 25 x 23, the owls are 36 x 42 – and the elephants 25 x 33    I may just make each of them into a baby quilt.   The instructions are a bit scarce and the giraffe pattern is only of the three giraffes, but they include fabric to make legs, hooves, and faces.   Too bad, they didn’t create the pattern that way.  These will be next on my list, if only to get them done and out of a box.  I can at least get them to the flimsy state, which is where I seem to be stopping this year.  Maybe that’s a good thing as I’m supposed to be able to see better after the April cataract surgery.

The rest of my day was spent at the gym, making a lasagna, washing clothes, and cleaning house.   Yes, I cleaned the house, but not the studio.   It’s nearly time for a deep spring cleaning and since I no longer climb step stools, I have a younger friend that will help me at that point.   Do you take everything out of your cupboards and closets, and clean and do all the woodwork as well?   I like to get that all done at one time.  Then I feel I can garden and enjoy the summer without that hanging over my head.  And this weekend, I will try to start the tomatoes, greens and peppers.  No promises though.
