No running, jumping, or ladders

IMG_3960

Today was the last visit to the doctor who repaired my ankle (at least until he sees something he doesn’t like on an annual x-ray)    It’s marvelous the inventions that are now available to us to help us live a more normal life.  My instructions  are no running, no jumping, and stay off ladders.  Other than that, have a normal life.    That is good news and he is also happy with my 10,000 daily steps.

We came home hungry and nothing was prepared,, so I pulled out a jar of canned potatoes, added seasonings and milk and put in VitaMix for a short time.   We heated that and Bill claims it was good enough to market.  Of course I didn’t think to take a photo until it was mostly gone.

Busy, but not accomplished

Some days are just too long for the energy I have and too short for what I want to achieve.  This was one of those.   After walking half an hour this morning (I’m doing 10,000 steps a day now), I  rested my legs by spinning on my electric spinner.    Then it was time to go to the medical appointment to try to avoid knee surgery.

IMG_4016

Lunch already!   Ok, we decided since we were close to a Whole Foods, we’d pick up some bread we especially like and put some in the freezer.   Since they only had 2 loaves left, we didn’t fill the freezer.   However, we decided to eat there, which won’t happen again soon.

IMG_4017

Home again and another half hour of walking which gave me about 3000 steps.   Then it was time for a webinar on replacing zippers –  continuing education which I enjoy.  After that it was time to feed and put the animals to bed.   A few more steps to complete my day and oh, yes, another batch of grapes on the dehydrator that weren’t drained enough made the smoke detector tattle on me again.    This time I was right there and saw what happened.   So this was a day, plenty happened, but nothing gained in the studio or in the garden.  And tomorrow I start over again with the steps and the gym which I am grateful I can do.

Exercise, spinning and gardening

I started the day with exercise and then a knee treatment.

IMG_3710  By 1 PM, I was ready for a rest.   I spun another 30 inches of roving (I tore the roving into 30″ lengths – just 28 more of this particular one to do at one a day).   When the roving is spun, I’ll ply it and look for a sweater pattern

Then to the greenhouse where I thought there might be some potatoes from last year that we missed.

IMG_3967

This is what we found – about 1/3 bucket of potatoes and one single leek.   Enough for a couple meals.   There were a number of tiny potatoes, so we left them to grow new plants.  I need to get someone to dig the beds outside as I have about 50 potatoes with 6-8″ long sprouts that need to be planted.  Maybe what I need is a whole week of sun without appointments.

I looked  again at working up these two kits and decided they need to go in a very back spot.   The designer gave all the patterns and fabrics, but not much in instructions.  And applique is not my favorite thing to do. Maybe when I get old………..I can drag them out again.

Meanwhile, I think tomorrow, I’ll go sign some legal documents, and by then it might be warm enough to go play in the dirt and I can get a few of these potatoes into the ground.   And I need to buy peas and get them started soon.

Cooking and Cleaning

IMG_3961 IMG_3962 IMG_3963I was looking for something else, but this is what I found.  Somehow, they were put in a tub and the tub was put on a shelf and though I knew I had them, I didn’t know where.  I don’t even remember how old they are.   The giraffe is the only one open so far and the pattern date is 2002, although, it probably was  purchased in a later year. They are kits,  so the fabric is with them.   They are reasonably small – the giraffes are 25 x 23, the owls are 36 x 42 – and the elephants 25 x 33    I may just make each of them into a baby quilt.   The instructions are a bit scarce and the giraffe pattern is only of the three giraffes, but they include fabric to make legs, hooves, and faces.   Too bad, they didn’t create the pattern that way.  These will be next on my list, if only to get them done and out of a box.  I can at least get them to the flimsy state, which is where I seem to be stopping this year.  Maybe that’s a good thing as I’m supposed to be able to see better after the April cataract surgery.

The rest of my day was spent at the gym, making a lasagna, washing clothes, and cleaning house.   Yes, I cleaned the house, but not the studio.   It’s nearly time for a deep spring cleaning and since I no longer climb step stools, I have a younger friend that will help me at that point.   Do you take everything out of your cupboards and closets, and clean and do all the woodwork as well?   I like to get that all done at one time.  Then I feel I can garden and enjoy the summer without that hanging over my head.  And this weekend, I will try to start the tomatoes, greens and peppers.  No promises though.

Sock progress

IMG_3956

The heel is done and now I’m on the home stretch.

IMG_3953

After the doctor, we stopped at Whole Foods and each had a veggie burrito.   They really fill the shells up.   I have tried filling them like that and end up with a mess that doesn’t all fit.

IMG_3955

On the way home, we stopped in Renton

IMG_3957

as I needed a pair of size 5 needles to do these socks and I was limping along with one way to short and one waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.  I like a 24″ length to do the socks.  I’m not sure about this pattern, so am trying to follow their directions.

Time to pay the piper

IMG_3873

It’s so easy to look back and see what the better path would have been.   So today, I paid for yesterday by sitting.   It just shouldn’t take so long to get back to par after a surgery.  Above are 3 sweet potatoes that I am hoping will send out runners I can plant.   If I wait until the seed houses have them in April, it will be too late to plant them in this area (Seattle).   So they are sitting on little toothpick legs and I am hoping for the bestIMG_3876Another wash cloth designed by Janet Nogle.  We were given about 9 rows a day and I was behind.   Janet finished the pattern yesterday.   However, sitting today gave me opportunity to catch up.IMG_3878I started these socks on #4 needles, but they are tight.  I need to buy some #5 needles and redo them.IMG_3869IMG_3850These are photos of this week’s groceries $32.89 and 34.95.    Plus we got a gallon of honey from the co-op for 50.50 which made 118.34 for this week.  We also ate out last week  $23. which I didn’t record and again this week $24.   So for this month groceries have been 305.24 and eating out has been $73.00.  And it’s going to get a lot worse since I’m needing lots of food for an open house for DH’s birthday next week end.

Groceries – week 1 and more

I thought it might be interesting to actually track what we purchase each week this year and if it isn’t where we want it, then we can modify our purchasing habits next year.   I’m not sure if I should include eating out or not.  Maybe and then I’ll also know how much we splurge.

IMG_3790 This was Tuesday’s purchase since our Vitamix is not back from being repaired. $5.00

IMG_3797

Wednesday is senior day at the local grocery store, giving us 7% off the bill, so I obliged them.   Cauliflower was on sale – oh happy day!    I purchased 4 heads, plus the other groceries here.  $105.64

IMG_3812 Today is Azure co-op day.   $76.26.  The 2 gallons of honey I so much need did not come in on this order.   But there is more red cabbage, some turmeric and sunchokes that I will plant and some sweet potatoes.   Oh, and yes, frozen pizzas for when I just can’t cook.

We did eat out once this week at our favorite Mexican place  “Rio Blanco”   $26.00

Week 1:   26.00 eating out and  186.90 groceries.  That seems high to me, but let’s see happens the rest of the month.

CRASH:   DH decided to go to the store before bed – do I need to count his treats as well.   I suppose I should, but that added another 42.51, which would bring the total to $229.41 plus eating out

I did get some bread baked this morning which is half gone already.   And I’ve been working on a quilt that I’m testing but can’t show until they publish it in July.

Countdown

IMG_3632

I spent the morning making soups.   We now have enough soup in the refrigerator to have soup once every day throughout December.   There are also patties and vegetables hiding in there.   DH does know how to cook potatoes, so I think we’re good for food.

IMG_3634

Then a wee trip to Office Depot produced a large calendar and a daily book, plus some pencils and a few Christmas cards

IMG_3633

And this had to come out of storage.  So now I’m ready.

Green socks update

IMG_3510

I have finished the heel and have picked up the stitches for the instep,, so can now put these away for working on without the brain in gear and can start another pair.

IMG_3509

These are another 15 jars of strawberry jam that will be used as gifts.   We like the good sized pieces of strawberry in it that you see floating.   We stir them together when we open the jar.

Purple socks

IMG_3483

The socks are finished.   Not perfect, but finished.   I wasn’t thrilled with this yarn after I started the socks.   I’m hoping they will soften after I wash them.   But they are DONE!   This is a busy month, so I’m not sure if I’ll start another pair right away.

IMG_3485

After we drove an hour each way to get some venison scraps and bones for the dogs, we came home to put it away, but will have to wait until morning for it to thaw just enough to separate it so we can freeze it in reasonable packages.

So we made 5 dozen banana/oatmeal cookies.   1 banana + 1 cup oats plus chocolate chips today.  Bill likes these especially after a workout.

IMG_3486

We needed more strawberry jam to have enough for the winter.   And it is one more thing I won’t have to worry about if we lose power.   So this kettle of strawberries turned into 16 cups more of jam.  It is low sugar and so tasty.

We are also trying to deal with time change.   I don’t understand why, but it seems to affect how we feel – more tired.   Maybe because the sun is going down at an earlier hour on our watches.
