Life on a sunny day

IMG_1226We had a beautiful sunny day, and look at the bees.  After being holed up for 3 months, it must feel wonderful to stretch those wings in 60 degree weather.  Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for rain, so they will be back inside.   It is only January and they won’t have many chances to clean house before March/April sunny days when they will be out looking for nectar.  The dandelions are the early ones here.  The are quite prolific in early spring.

Meanwhile the moles have been busy pushing up dirt

IMG_1232

Not only did the bees take advantage of the sun, so did we, with a bit of outdoor cleaning.   It is so damp here during the winter that most everything outside turns green.  This is the top of the chest freezer where I keep dog food.   It sits under a deck, but still was quite green on top.  Even our entrance cement gets moss.   So we did a bit of cleaning.

IMG_1229

See that shiny part in the middle – perhaps I should have taken the photo before I put in the new light.   Can you explain to me why the designer had to make it so difficult to change a light bulb in the refrigerator?   Fortunately, I knew where the manual was, but it said “remove the screws” which at least told me that the cover didn’t slip up in there in some way.    This one has 3 screws that have to be removed with a hex nut driver.   How many of us women have those in our artillery?   I did have a light bulb replacement.  However, I tried several tools before I called the husband for back up.   Obviously, making it easy to replace this light bulb was not their priority.

And no photo with this but since tomorrow is our 52nd anniversary, and Chipotles was having a special, we decided to go there tonight instead of wait.  The special was if you tried their tofu special, you got a coupon for another burrito within the next month free.   I was anxious to try the tofu as I love tofu.  But they ran out before we got there.  We had veggie burritos and they gave us the coupon to come back as well.  I think we’ll try for lunch next time, then they shouldn’t be out.

Sun = work

We started our day outside by catching these now full grown ducks (at least by size).   Then we put them in this pen so the dogs and other animals could come get acquainted throughout the day.

IMG_1206

Chore #2 was to finish the pruning and tying the grapes.  There is a short row and a lengthy row.   I need to buy more grape plants to finish the second row.

IMG_1208

Chore #3 was to get the raspberries done.  They are now 2/3 finished.IMG_1209

Here the chickens are coming in for the night and want to make sure there is a bit of a handout.   The sheep and alpacas have already had their treats.

IMG_1204

By then the day (which started outside at 11) was over and the fellows wanted to collect their dues and go home.  And once again I am reminded why supervisors get paid more.    It’s hard work managing people.

Yard work

Today was foggy instead of sunny and our forecast for the next two days could mimic today.   I’ll be very happy with that as the temperature is in the lower 50s, which is more comfortable than the Midwest and east coast are having currently.     This photo is of the front of the house after the work was done yesterday.   We will wait until it’s warm enough to get some color spots in there.

The photo on the left is the large pile of bark that was delivered yesterday and on the right is what is left after a full day’s work.   I am so very happy that this young man is not yet back to work so he can help us.

He put a lot of bark in the sheep sleeping quarters and a good share in the chicken/goose/duck area.  (ducks and geese are not allowed into the coop, but are locked up for the night on the side of the coop)

Then he started working on the apple trees.   It will be terrific this summer to have them so well mulched that we don’t have to worry about weeds and water.   (It was getting dark, but you can still see where he is working.  He will probably finish moving the pile of bark Friday and then I’ll wait until another streak of good weather to order more.

I wasn’t need to supervise quite as much today, so tried 5 new recipes.   This meansI won’t be spending as much time in the kitchen for the next week.

A rainy day: perfect time to organize

Well, at least the craft stuff was pulled out in an effort to find what I knew I had somewhere.   I looked in the correct box, but didn’t see those bells way in the back.   They are now found and used and I will sort through and label the rest of the items before returning to the shelves.  That should keep me busy for a while, especially since there are some small Christmas items to finish first.

Look  at how the ducks have grown.

A promise and new life

Today was a perfect day to be outside gardening here in the PNW.   The sun peaked now and then, the temperature was about 50 with no wind.    With all these daffodils and a few tulips to plant, it was time to get going.   So I worked a spot in front of our 3 rhododendron bushes which is also right next to the asphalt driveway.   It is a spot that only has color when the rhodies are in bloom.   This year the plan is to plant nastursuims as soon  as the soil is warm enough.

IMG_1024

The railroad tie is about 8′ long and the dark spot is where I plant.   It was such heavy clay that I could only dig far enough down to barely cover the daffodil bulb   Yes I know they and the tulips according to the package are supposed to be 6″ deep.  But I didn’t have that much soil, so after I finished getting all 25 of the bulbs in the ground, we put a couple of bags of topsoil over the them.  I would really like a color spot there.

In looking for the shovel (which I ended up not using), I went down to where Bill was adding chips to the muddy area by the chicken coop.   When I called him, the little lost duck answered me.   It took a bit, but we were finally able to catch him and reunite him/her with the siblings.     What a relief!

IMG_1023

It is only December and already these iris bulbs have started sending up shoots.  They have been in the cold ground, so I’m surprised they are in such a rush   It is fun to watch the new life arrive.  They must want spring as much as I do.

Ducks and a promise of Spring

Remember the baby ducks, Huey, Dewey and Louie?

ducks at 2 weeks nov21 2014

We put them in the pasture last Sunday, thinking they would team up with the other ducks.   So I introduced them to the dogs, telling the dogs, “these are mama’s and I want you to take care of them” .    That could have gone a lot better if the ducks hadn’t decided to make a run for it as soon as the introduction was completed.    Running is fun and a game which Lacey still enjoys.   Even that might have ended quickly except the alpacas got in on the chasing game (have you ever seen anything so funny as an alpaca chasing a young duck) and suddenly the ducks were under cover in the bushes and I had no idea where they were.   Obviously they were scared and weren’t coming out just because I called.     I gave up, came back into the house and soon, there was one little duck at the back door.  I let him in, caught him and then took him out to the greenhouse   I also caught a bantam and put her out there with it so it wasn’t too lonely.     Since we had not seen any sign of them since the initial release, we sadly thought the coyotes would find them before we did.

Imagine our delighted surprise when the night before last, one of the wandering ducks showed up here near the front door   He allowed us to catch him and we put him with the other duck.  They are so happy to be back together.

This morning, the third duck was sighted, but ran before we could get it    Hopefully, soon it will hear the other two ducks and come up here.   What amazed me was that even though they were way down in the pasture, they knew the house was home and came here.

This morning we planted tulips and hyacinths –  some in the 3 planters on the back deck and some in pots.   I’m hoping this will work, but I haven’t tried it before.   When the plants in the pots peek out, I plan to bring them in the house to enjoy.  (I still have 100 daffodil bulbs to get in the ground during the next lull in the rain.)

The afternoon was spent shopping and fixing my quilting machine which somehow managed to get thread wrapped around an important wheel.   Yes, Liz, you warned me.   Thank you.

We ended our day with a light, delicious supper of strawberries and cashew cream, which was very satisfying..

Socks revisited

I am still working on these socks slowly.   I am planning to get them done before the end of the year.

And the ducks are still under their red lights, but growing so fast.   They do NOT like their photo taken.  Tomorrow they are moving to a larger tub.

New ducklings on the block

ducks at 2 weeks nov21 2014Today’s addition to the family.    The woman who had these has to find homes for nearly all her animals and was having trouble finding someone who knew how to raise ducklings this small and who would not eat them as adults.    You know who was chosen.      So these darling, messy little ones, who will be 2 weeks tomorrow,  have come here to live.  Now I’m praying for an early spring so they can go out with the other ducks and enjoy grass and the pond.

Chicken freezer camp

Yes, there are a number of photos, but unless you request them, I’ll spare you .  I took the 20 chickens over to a friend’s place this morning and five were traded for 5 extra roosters that he had.   He wanted to keep the younger hens for layers.  The others were processed and are now in the dog’s freezer.  You might be interested in the fact that he pulled fully formed eggs with shells out of some  of the layers and behind this egg were 4 yolks in descending size waiting to have shells and be laid.

DSC00159 yolks

I bought some feed for the animals and came home.   We put all that away and headed off to get the last of the dog bones from the wild venison that will be available unless we find a new source.   I was pleased to get it as the dogs can spend a lot of time chewing bones instead of destroying other things.

We got home about dark and put the bones in the freezer.   It’s been a long cold day and we are very much enjoying the Sabbath rest.

Sewing/craft show

Mary and I attended the sewing/craft show today.  This year there were a lot of fabrics, patterns, machines, and notions for sale.   There was also the required embroidery designs and a bit of thread.  Here is Mary shopping.

IMG_0802

It seems that each year there are fewer vendors and fewer things in which we are interested.   We each bought tweezers and that was all.    I’m not sure if that is because there are fewer things of interest, higher prices, or because we have what we need.   I took photos of a couple of booths just to prove that we were there this year, though we may not repeat this.   Our time would have been better spent making items and using some of what we have instead of out gathering more ideas and tempting ourselves with more product.

IMG_0801

We did see these rather nifty little beads that swell up and are very pretty in vases.   They come in colors and are so pretty.  They hold a good measure of water so you can actually grow some houseplants in them.

IMG_0808

Then it was off to pick up my co-op order.   If several of us order together we get better prices.  Today I had ordered apples and cauliflower.   DH would like some applesauce since he finished the last of what we had.   Perhaps next week, I can work it in.

IMG_0812

And the last project was capturing 20 chickens to take to a friend’s house tomorrow morning.   They are spending the night in cages as it is far easier to catch them roosting than running around the yard,
