Seed starting

IMG_4240

Finally, I’m getting around to starting seeds.  I am out of bell pepper and cauliflower seeds, so will get those this week.    But I did start a tray of marigolds and a try of alyssum plus cilantro, nasturtiums, heirloom tomatoes, endive, romaine, little gem lettuce, broccoli, celery water cress, red and white cabbage, beets, kale, cress, and Chinese cabbage.  Radishes and carrots need to be started in the ground in which they will grow.  Peas and potatoes are hoping to get into the outside garden on Friday.   As soon as the seedlings get about an inch high, they will be moved to give them more room.

IMG_4235We went to the feed store today to get a couple of these feeding troughs for the sheep.   We needed two troughs instead of the little dishes we had been using.   There are actually two in this photo with sheep surrounding each.   This is a much easier way to give them their grain.   Below are some photos of the babies.  They didn’t want to come in tonight – too fun in the sun.

An interesting day

IMG_4145Yesterday morning, I thought spring might be on the way.    Today, it definitely is not.

IMG_4149

IMG_4220Here are 3 sheep photos.   This last one you can see one of the dogs with the big fluffy tail.   It appeared they rounded the sheep up and were counting them.    Of course, we don’t really know what was happening, except they touched noses, then the sheep wandered off to eat.

IMG_4222This has been a big project.  (I did hire help).  The boxes were moved a bit this winter and another trellis was built.   Then we had lost so much soil because over time as one pulls weeds or food out, a bit of soil comes out.    So we used 6 bales of peat moss, 18 bags of sand and 3.5 bales of perlite to fill all the boxes again.   This time the dirt is only on the bottom, so hopefully we won’t have the weed problem and the food will come out cleaner.   It’s the Mittleider method if you are interested.    So tomorrow, I absolutely  MUST start the veggies seeds so they can be transplanted and I also need to get this fertilized and thoroughly watered this week.  I’m a bit late, but the forecast is for freezing nights every night this week and rain through Wednesday.  Then if the forecast is correct we’ll get 3 days of sun or partial sun, then more rain.

We lost power for a couple hours today, so I did get a chance to sit and knit in front of the fireplace which was lovely.  The wind and rain were vicious.

Just tired

IMG_4135After gym this morning, I came home and unloaded 12 bags of sand at 50# each.  No, I did not lift and carry each of them, but used the wheel barrow to get them where I needed them.   When the muscles aren’t enough, one has to get inventive.

IMG_4136Then there were these 4 bags of peat moss which each weigh about 50#.

IMG_4137Then I had 10 yards of playground chips delivered because the ground was so muddy that we were sinking in it, somewhat like quick sand.   We have hard pan about 18″ down and this is a low spot, so water has no where to go.

IMG_4140While I was having my gym training this morning, I mentioned to my trainer that I had ordered all these chips and did she have extra time.   She did and came when I called to tell her the chips had arrived.   Without her speedy help, this area would only be about 1/4 done.

IMG_4143We also put it down the length on the left side.   We used about 7 of the 10 yards and have a bit left for when this gets worked in and muddy and have to add more.   We covered it with a tarp.

Then the sheep arrived and that was a bit of fun as they didn’t want to get out of the trailer.   It was  all new to them.   Finally, they were encouraged to get out and we put all the animals in for the night.   No sheep pictures as I was so tired by then that I totally didn’t think about it.     I will get some this week

We came in , had a light supper and each had a loooong  soak in the tub.    Our muscles aren’t used to that much physical work.

I am so glad it’s time for Sabbath.    It will be a joy to rest.

Spinning and making raisins

IMG_4006

The hot wire has now been extended.   Maybe that will keep Beau on the side he is supposed to be on.   He so loves us and thinks he needs to guard us, which would be okay, if he didn’t follow the car out the gate.

IMG_4029The raisins were miserable to get off the screens.

IMG_4031

However we now have another 20 cups of raisins made from our own grapes.

IMG_4034

I tired of doing the same spinning, so am now doing some small pieces of various colors, then will go back to the sweater yarn.   I have also decided I need to spin another piece of wool to add to the sweater yarn so it will be 3 ply.

Tired Thursday?

I am so ready to have this be the end of the week so I can have a Sabbath Day’s rest.   One more day.

Today we spent much energy and time toting the rest of last years hay over to the sheep pen and spreading it out so they could stay out of the mud.   I don’t remember having this much mud before.   We have fewer sheep and more mud.   I guess it’s all that rain.

My sister did a marvelous job on all these Sunbonnet’s.   She had the first one all put together and the second one, I finished with the sewing time I had today.

IMG_4026

The sashing is all cut out for two more and there are 35 little girls left, so I think I’ll do another one like these two and then put a solid corner on the last one – but wait – that means I need 16 girls and there are only  15.   I wonder if she has any of these fabrics left -though I doubt it.   Any thoughts on how I can make 15 work out?   If I added another girl from my fabrics, it wouldn’t match any of the fabrics she used.     Tomorrow, I really need to get back to the quilting, as I now have 5 quilts hanging on the board with one on the machine and 4 more hanging in the closet ready to be quilted.

A little gardening, a little canning, a little shopping

IMG_4018

I froze grapes in gallon bags last fall because I just didn’t have time or energy to make grapes then.  Also, I find the raisins easier to dehydrate once the grapes have been frozen and thawed.   So this morning I canned 6 pints of grape juice from the thawed raisins.

IMG_4019

After coming home from gym, I sold my first spinning wheel to a man who has taken one lesson on the same type of wheel.   It’s a good wheel and he should enjoy it.

After lunch, I went out and worked on one side in the greenhouse.   It’s amazing, even baby carrot seeds dropped last fall have started growing.   There were these carrots left in over winter.   They are a  bit short as I need to dig down farther to give them more good growing soil and less hardpan.  Not only were carrots starting to grow, but the weeds had a great start.   Tomorrow, I will put down the preplant nutrients and water well.   This weekend, I’ll start sow some cool weather crops and hopefully get some tomatoes and pepper seeds started in the house.   (Need more hours)

IMG_4023

We retrieved the sewing machine that had to be serviced and made a stop at Costco, which is rarely cheap.  We had $55.00 in  rebates off this, so that helped ay for the extra dog treats.   We should be good for another year of treats now.

I certainly don’t want to forget that Beau wants to be a house dog, and therefore has been climbing the fence.   That would be okay if we could trust him not to leave when the gate opens.   We can’t so he has to stay behind the fence.  He weighs about 120#, but fortunately walks well on a lead.  So, in the dark and driving rain, we ushered him into the quarters he shares with the sheep at night.  Now I wish you all  a good, restful night, knowing that tomorrow will have new challenges.

Goodbye Roo and the ophthalmologist

IMG_3779

Isn’t he just beautiful.   IMG_3776My 2 year old bantam rooster went to live with some folks who had 9 hens and no roo.   I shall miss him, but DH is insisting we don’t need a bunch of chicks who will grow up to be more hens and roosters.    I guess he’s right, but I shall miss this quiet little gem who spent nights at the front door.   And that is another reason he has changed homes.   He had a small harem that would not stay in the field with the other chickens.   They wanted to stay up at the house with him.  The mess was a bit much.

It’s been a tough animal time.   Before surgery, I had to sell the 3 alpacas and 6 sheep to get the numbers down to where my non-farming DH was willing to take on those chores.  As soon as I am back to normal, that will change. I have sheep lined up, but am not sure if I will get more alpacas, simply because I’ve had a difficult time finding   someone to shear them.

The Dr. visit this morning simply confirmed what my mind knew, but was trying to deny and that is this year will be the year I will most likely need cataract surgery.   The end of this month will be the visit to the surgeon.    I’ve known for 3-4 years that I was borderline, but hoped the improved diet would change that for the better.   It hasn’t so far.

The last hat

IMG_3677

The hats are done, and I need to get some more yarn to finish the scarves.

Yesterday our daughter and son-in-law were here.   He walked our fence line and found trees across the fence on opposite sides.  We were blessed in that our dogs and sheep stayed here.   And today we had a fellow out doing some repair.  Since he can only work on it on Sundays, it won’t be finished for another week or two, but we have a smaller pasture that all can be in while we wait.

But wait!   That wasn’t enough.  We discovered the freezer we keep our dog meat in died..   So tomorrow, phoning to find a new freezer will be high on my list.   Unfortunately because we didn’t have warning, we didn’t have time to shop.   So I’m first going to talk to the used appliance people here and if nothing there, it will have to be a big box store.    The fun doesn’t end.

Another Giraffe

IMG_3487 The people giving out the quilts in Eastern Washington have requested some baby and children quilts and since I have this quilt in progress for a friend, I started another.   This one is now ready to stitch down.   All the pieces are now cut out, so once I have this sewn down, the top will go very fast.

The rest of the day was spent retrieving our dog, Lacey from the vet after her spay.  We want her happy and healthy.

Busy, busy, busy

IMG_3277

What is this life if, full of care

We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare. (W.H. Davies)

Sometimes I feel this quote describes me.    I feel driven to do all that I can.  I’ve been too busy to really enjoy my animals and I miss that.      So I’m going to try to slow down a bit and enjoy more time with the sheep, the hoop house garden and family.  The quilts and other items are needed, but others are also making them and together we do make a difference.
