An incredible woman

This article is from  “MaryJamesFarm” a  magazine to which I just subscribed.    This magazine is for the woman with a Farm girl mind whether or not she actually lives on a farm or in a city apartment.  This issue has a variety of topics from cooking pasta and baking mini tarts to tool tips, other crafting and even beginning beekeeping.  There is a lot of variety.   I highly recommend you at least take a look at it.  This article is in the Feb-Mar 2014 issue.

Happy Valentine’s Day

The house was nearly ready for company tomorrow and the meal was ready to be heated etc. so I had about half an hour to  work on an embroidery project.

P1000828

OOPS!   One careless moment later cost me 5 hours of time as the machine needle broke trying to go through my finger, leaving a threaded eye in my finger.  It took the orthopedic hand specialist over 2 hours to get it out.

Therefore, I don’t have a new project to show you.    But I’ll find ways to work around it!  There will be new projects this coming week.   And I’m happy to report that so far this month, I’ve kept up with my walking goals.

Doll dress #1

P1000826 fairy outfit

My friend, Mary made this dress for me along with three others for my brother’s granddaughters.

P1000827 christmas dress.

Here is the dress I finished today.  It is the first “in the hoop” dress I’ve done.   I learned a lot from making this dress.   For one thing,  I will make the arm size a bit larger as these dolls have their fingers spread so it actually takes more room to get over their hands than their arms.

I purchased a couple of sale dolls for which to make clothes.   A doll with some outfits will make a very happy girl at Christmas.  And if I start now, it could get done.

Getting behind

P1000815 Blue sky

What an absolutely gorgeous day!    One would never guess that we had 3 1/2″ of snow on Sunday.   Today the ground is nearly dry.   It was a great day to have good weather,  as I had to restring some hot wire and will need to find about 900 feet to finish the job.

P1000819 hot wire

Here is the power box already in place, but not hooked up to power. and a look at the wire I’m putting back up.   Things happen over the years.   How or where it went, I don’t know, but all the plastic wire seems to have vanished.

P1000817 Beau

Here is Beau who actually stays home and on the job.    Lacey is determined to spend time guarding the entire neighborhood instead of staying home and guarding her own family of animals.  And I am determined to thwart her efforts.   It’s a real tug of war.

P1000820 doll dress start

The grocery shopping did happen today (before Lacey escaped).   However, very little sewing happened.     I did start one doll dress, which I plan to finish tomorrow.  Tax work scheduled for today was postponed for a few days.   Maybe next week as I’m not real excited about doing it.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who gets sidetracked, and not always of my own doing.

Basket quilt top done

Between retrieving an escapee dog and trying to tame the Quicken program so I can get taxes done,  I managed to get a bit sewn.

P1000813 basket fin top

The borders are on and the top is finished ready to be quilted.  The red across the top will be the binding which I think gives it a more finished look than having the binding match the outside border.  Also you may notice the missing basket handle has been added.  Such an easy thing, so why did I keep putting it off?

Tomorrow after grocery shopping, maybe, just maybe, a doll dress will get created.

Basket quilt update 2/10/14

P1000798 basket quilt top before borders

Little by little, the quilt top is coming together.   The inside is finished now, except for the one basket handle.   After that,  it will get borders, and be put in the quilting pile.

Suprise snow!

P1000793 at the river

Yesterday we had a delightful walk by the river.

 P1000794 snow Feb 9

But look what we woke up to this morning.   We were expecting snow flurries, just not 3 1/2 inches of snow.  February is our the most unpredictable month and usually the coldest.   2 years ago, it was a huge ice storm, so this isn’t bad at all.    It has started to melt, but the promised rain has not yet arrived.    If we get it during the night, the streets will be slushy tomorrow, but not icy.

I had planned to start the lettuce and cruciferous plants.   Maybe next Sunday, or maybe not.

February Decorations

I love the happy colors used for most holiday decorations.   And the month of February with Valentine’s day has such bright and happy colors.

P1000776 heart quilt over fireplace

This pattern for this small quilt is from Accuquilt and goes together very quickly. because I used fusible on my fabric before cutting it out.   Then I just ironed the hearts on.  If you would like to use it as a baby quilt, it would be good to  zigzag around the edges of the hearts to withstand all the laundering.

P1000780 In the hoop mini pillows by GiGi

These little pillows, from Charming Station again are fast, easy and have no calories!

P1000779 placemats

And don’t forget the table.   Placemats are always an easy way to put color in a room.  And they are easy enough to design your own.

Finished jacket

P1000787 woke up to feb 7

This is what I woke up to this morning – just a light dusting of snow over the ice.   Isn’t it pretty? (as long as I can stay inside).

P1000785 finished sweat shirt jacket

Done and ready to wear.

P1000790 buttons inside jacket

Notice on this photo that I sewed the two buttons inside near the bottom of the jacket.  The card came with 8 buttons.  I used 6 on the jacket and because I sometimes lose a button, it is handy to have a replacement instead of having to replace all the buttons.  So I add one or two of the same buttons on the inside for just in case.

Basket Quilt update

P1000619 basket blocks finished

These baskets begged for something more than just plain sashing.

P1000781 strips on basket quilt

So I made a strip of three fabrics, sandwiching the red between two yellow pieces for the sashing.

P1000783 stirps and 9 patches for basket quilt

This called for 9 patch cornerstones.

P1000784 progress on basket quilt

I like the way it’s coming together and hope to get the top finished next week.   Along with sewing the sashing and cornerstones, I have some setting triangles to add.

Stay tuned for the sweatshirt finish tomorrow – the buttonholes are done, just the buttons to go!  Have any of you started your sweatshirt makeover yet.   If you have and would like, I’ll post photos of them here.
