Happy Father’s Day

I hope all  fathers and men had a wonderful day.     You are an extremely important part of our world and we love you

P1010812 father's day

Our youngest daughter and her husband (dad to our grandcat) took us  to a Mexican dinner for the event

The Dad that lives here helped me water the garden and pick another 2 gallons of strawberries.    The string beans are now in.

Oh, and the most exciting thing that happened in the last 12 hours is that the fabric and notions end of the basement flooded giving us something to do until very late.    A fitting on the water softener failed.     Because this is not the first time, most things on the floor were in plastic totes.   And a couple cardboard boxes that became quite wet were lined with garbage bags.   Some fabric scraps are now being washed again and a huge load of towels is now out of the dryer.   All in all, I have a much cleaner floor in there, though it will take awhile before the water under the floor tiles evaporates.   I’m very thankful for heat in the floor.

Sister’s quilts

P1010806My sister gave me a box of these blocks plus this quilt top and another nearly finished.   They are beautiful, but she doesn’t want to sew more because she doesn’t think so.   I am inclined to take the outside border off, add more blocks to make it larger and keep it.   But that probably won’t happen.

P1010811

Look at her work.   It is really good.

P1010807

These are bibs she did.    Look at the stitching below.   They are turned exactly on the line and the sewing around the neck is quite precise.

The work is better than 90% of my work.   And not only is the work good.  The projects are finished.

P1010780I gave him the camera and sent him out to take photos and these are three of the views of her yard surroundings with which he returned.    He loves taking photos as you can see.

P1010797We returned via the Seattle Bremerton ferry

P1010803 starbucks - good

On our way home, we passed the International Starbucks home (which used to be the big Seattle Sears)

It is very interesting to take someone new to show your hometown.   You start seeing sites that are very familiar to you with different eyes.    This is one of many sites I frequently pass without giving it a second thought.

Ride the Ducks

IMG_0343

P1010759 science center

We had a most enjoyable day.  The weather was perfect as we walked past the Space Needle and the Science Center on our way over to the “Ride the Ducks

Ride the Ducks of Seattle

IMG_0342

The “ducks” are copies of the amphibious machines that were used in World War II.     If it weren’t that we were taking the children, I would have totally missed this marvelous guided tour.   It consisted of an hour through Seattle with the driver helping us all make fools of ourselves and laughing.   He took us through areas in Seattle to which  I had never been, giving us the history as  we  went.   He also took us through parts that have been very run down and unsafe, which have been totally remodeled.   I  remembered these run down areas from my childhood and was amazed at the transformation.

I lost my camera so didn’t take photos of the land areas. but into the water we went and I remembered the cell phone..   So here we go with the  photos I did take on lake Union.

I think he said there were 500 houseboats on this lake, nothing inexpensive, no matter how it looked.  And there were some very majestic boats moored there as well.   We had to stop and get an ice cream for  the hungry ones among us and I asked if anyone had turned in a camera.   It turned out that I left it lying there when I purchased the tickets.

P1010760 fist market

Then it was off to Pike Place Market and the flying fish.   It’s difficult to catch a flying fish, but as a fish is sold, the man on the left in front, throws it to the fellow between the signs (center left) who catches it in a paper.  So you don’t really get to see the fish land because he twists it in his hand so fast.   And as they fish is being thrown and wrapped for shipping, the fellows chant about the sale.    After that we purchased a few vegetables and some shell pasta for dinner.

P1010768 ole curiosity sh

Off to the Olde Curiosity Shop, also a relic from my childhood where my brother picked up a few postcards.    And with that, this tired crew went home.

Turn of the 20th century

P1010747 outback or hotel

Today was a genealogy/history field trip.   We went to Darrington, WA (state) where my grandparents farmed starting in 1925,   This is the view from the back door of the room I stayed in

P1010750 front of hotel

And this is from the front of the building.    The scenery is stunningly gorgeous and beautiful still as few people live in the area.   It is nestled in the Cascades and for that reason gets more than its share of rain and cool weather.

P1010756 valley

We were able to visit the fields that my grandparents farmed as well as we were invited into the house that sits there now.   It is 4 times the size of the original house, which they remodeled as they added onto it.   There are people still living in the area today whose parents were friends of my relatives and their names were know.   I think it helped to have my 90 year old second cousin along as she was raised there and she remembered the names and who lived where.   It was all very interesting.

The farmer who lives there today purchased not only my  grandfather’s farm, but grandpa’s brother’s farm as well and now has 700 acres which they farm as a family.   Both his 25 year old daughter and his 27  old son and their partners share in the farming.   They raise hay and 250 head of beef cattle.   It is such a pleasure to see young people still interested in saving the farms.

The small town is a destination place – not a place on the way to somewhere else.   And the economy has been hard on it.   We found the one small motet, a couple small coffee kiosks, but no place to eat.  Oh, and a small IGA grocery store.    I wonder how much longer it will stay small with the beautiful landscape it has

P1010751river

We visited this beautiful area nearby where the park service has moved this house.

And here is a canoe alongside the house so you can see the mode of travel on the river.

I will leave you with another photo of the area and be back with a different trip tomorrow.

New babies

P1010701roosters on guard

Bantams  at the age of 4 months already trying out their crowing sounds.   It is rather funny listening to them learning the crow.

P1010702 new baby

A still wet baby arrived and the mothers are co-parents.   They shared setting duties and now the baby will be under one for awhile and then the other.   There are 3 more eggs, so maybe each mom will get her own baby.  Can you see the bantam mom in the back and the baby nearer to her?   The eggs were from large chickens.

P1010746 first baby arti

The other baby is an artichoke.   I don’t know if it will grow larger or when the time to pick is so will wait and watch.  I’m sorry, somehow I hit the gray setting on the camera.

The weeds grew so fast when the warm weather came, that we hired two fellows from the high school (couldn’t get them before school year ended).   So they spent 7 hours here today with half of that cleaning out the chicken house and the other weed eating the weeds between the garden boxes.   I’ll get a photo of that when the sun is shining.   We zonked out today.

Melons, cukes and worms

P1010693 melons, cukes

This photos was difficult to get as there are just too many weeds behind them – a problem which hopefully will be solved tomorrow.   I have hired two 17-year-old young men to help me get things back under control.   I had to wait until their school year was finished for them to work, but somehow the weeds did not get this message.   These melons sat in the greenhouse too long as they are now in bloom, but I mulched them heavily as I planted them and am hoping for the  best.    I also planted some tiny lettuce starts and tomorrow must get the kale starts planted.   Oh, and I did finally tuck some zucchini seeds in the ground.   l want to get beet and carrot seeds, planted,  but my grandson and my  brother’s granddaughter will be here starting Wednesday and I’m thinking that will be fun for them.

P1010697 worms in bin

Can you see the worms?    I’m excited to have a worm bin going once again.   Last time I left it in the greenhouse and the day was too hot for them.   So now a couple years later, I’m starting over.  I’d like to just let them go in the ground in the greenhouse, but the chickens get in there occasionally and I’m fearful for the lives of the worms.

Aurofil #6 and “The Harbinger” book review

P1010677 june block

I love the Aurofil BOM with Pat Sloan.   Each block is simple and yet put together with the same colors, I’ll have a nice Christmas quilt.

P1010678 aurofill

I spent today relaxing and reading the “Harbinger – the ancient mystery that holds the secret of America’s future” by Jonathan Cahn   It was difficult to put down.   He puts his facts in the form of a novel.   He shows comparisons between ancient Israel and today’s America with facts to back it up.   Israel and America were both very blessed and both started  with God at the helm.  Then both turned from Him.  God gave the Israelites warnings as to what would happen if they continued in rebellion.  Are we receiving messages as well and ignoring them?   Some of our top government people used words from Isaiah that foretold of Israel’s destruction if they didn’t turn back to God.   But they apparently didn’t read the whole passage as they  used them as words of hope instead of warning  after 9/11 and the events which have followed.   It amazed me  times were so specific – even to the dates of the stock market and bank collapses.   After reading this book, I am definitely inspired to go back and read ancient Israel’s history as recorded in the Bible.   There may be more in there with double meanings.

Strawberries n Bees

P1010685 strawberries

Strawberries!.   This is one of the reasons we garden.  There is nothing like very fresh strawberries (and other fresh foods).   These are picked, rinsed, stemmed, sliced and eaten over zucchini bread asap.   We aren’t yet growing enough to keep us throughout the winter.   So in 2 weeks, I’ll be buying a hundred pounds from the local farm and freezing them.  That will be a long working day to get them in the freezer.  When it’s ugly outside, summer fruits remind us there will be another summer with better weather.

P1010683

P1010684 bees

This is another of “our” crops.   Actually we let the bees do the work.   I painted some new boxes for them today.   Here, I’m checking to see if the bees need another box yet and the answer is no.    Notice I’m not holding them too close.    I found the hive to the right in the photo no longer has bees in it.   I don’t know what happened, but did take the box apart.    I will check the bees again next week  as I see the blackberries are in full bloom and that is their primary crop.

Some corn and string beans went into the ground as well today.   You will get to see a photo when they show their little faces.

Have you ever broken a VitaMix?    I use it so often that the bearings came out of it yesterday.   I love that machine.    So today I called the company and will have a new blade assembly in about a week.   They were so very pleasant and helpful on the phone.  He assured me that is a rare occurrence, but was happy that I am using it so much.   And I am happy that I have two jars, so that I can continue making smoothies and other foods while the new one is in route.

I
