Grocery day

IMG_1246I’m quite sure that groceries are going up, up, and more up, which is why I really want to have a good garden with loads canned, frozen and otherwise stored.   We started at Costco and yes, I know that it is difficult to come out of there with just a few things.   However, with what we purchased there today,  I don’t think we need to visit the food part of the store for at least two months.   To follow that up, we went to Fred Meyer for the items that Costco didn’t have.   I have definitely learned that only one of a couple should go to the store, but I don’t know how to put that in practice, when he likes to go with me.   When the two of us go, it seems to me that we come out of there with three times as much as either would have purchased.   The only consolation was that most of it was long term items, some for the freezer and some like sunflower seeds that I use to make humus.  Some of it was for the big Super bowl game Sunday where several are getting together to enjoy the game.

After lunch I made zucchini patties for the freezer and for tomorrow.   Then I put the rice and lentils that I soaked this morning for flatbread into the blender with salt, onion and garlic powder until it was thick and smooth.   I saw this recipe this past week, but I really don’t remember where and since I couldn’t refer back to it, I baked it at 400 for 20 minutes on a silicone pad on a baking sheet, then flipped it for 5 more minutes.   If I had used two sheets, it would have made wonderful crackers.   Bill cut it into some small pieces for dipping and some larger pieces to eat with meals.  This is a great and easy recipe for gluten-free menus.

Then to add some humor to my day, the geese wanted to be herded into the night enclosure.   So I put the rest of the birds in and went after the geese.   They came to the door which I then opened and the latest three ducks ran out.   OK, ducks are out and geese are in.  I managed to corned one duck and got it back in and the other two ran off to the pond.   So I went into the house.   About 1/2 hour later at sundown, I went outside and these two were giving me the what for because they were locked out.   So I went down there and told them that’s what happens at night, they better stay in next time.  They were very happy to get back in.   One  just enjoys the animals even with their quirks.

Sewing/craft show

Mary and I attended the sewing/craft show today.  This year there were a lot of fabrics, patterns, machines, and notions for sale.   There was also the required embroidery designs and a bit of thread.  Here is Mary shopping.

IMG_0802

It seems that each year there are fewer vendors and fewer things in which we are interested.   We each bought tweezers and that was all.    I’m not sure if that is because there are fewer things of interest, higher prices, or because we have what we need.   I took photos of a couple of booths just to prove that we were there this year, though we may not repeat this.   Our time would have been better spent making items and using some of what we have instead of out gathering more ideas and tempting ourselves with more product.

We did see these rather nifty little beads that swell up and are very pretty in vases.   They come in colors and are so pretty.  They hold a good measure of water so you can actually grow some houseplants in them.

Then it was off to pick up my co-op order.   If several of us order together we get better prices.  Today I had ordered apples and cauliflower.   DH would like some applesauce since he finished the last of what we had.   Perhaps next week, I can work it in.

And the last project was capturing 20 chickens to take to a friend’s house tomorrow morning.   They are spending the night in cages as it is far easier to catch them roosting than running around the yard,

Sew Fun October infomercial

Today’s Sew Fun leader, Lee Fleek, spent a fair amount of time on stenciling and stamping which I haven’t delved into as yet, so I don’t have much to report on that except,  if that is something you are interested in, there are a number of new products on the market.  Here a couple items she showed.   This book she liked and below that is a really cute table setting she put on some fabric as well as a portfolio she made.

They  were designed to be used with or without mylar and can be used in so many ways.

From this CD which has all the designs to make this quilt,

she made this stunning quilt.  She said it was the first quilt she completed and the instructions were so good, that it was easy to do.   It is all programmed in the pattern.

Fiskers has produced some new shears for cutting very thick fabrics and another for cutting heavy items like metals.

Shoes and canning

I did sew this morning, but nothing really to show yet.

The doctor ordered new shoes, so that was the first order of business when the stores opened.   New Balance, they are.

Then it was off to the hardware store and Costco.    When I can get the camera to take color again, I’ll show you the new garden boots and shoes.     Costco was more expensive trip.   They have really changed things around since we were there three weeks ago and now near the entrance, have an organic section with many gluten-free selections.   In case you missed them there, they are also in the regular section.   We were like kids in a candy store.

Then home to face a mass of tomatoes.   Fortunately there are still about 5 gallons that are not ripe enough to process.    But I did make and process 22 pints of salsa.   Since we use about a pint a week, I’ll get some more green peppers and onions and do about that many more.   The rest of this years tomatoes will just be sauce and canned as is.  I do write the products and date on the lid so we have some idea of age and product.

Really seeing

Many times I am so busy running, or doing whatever I think needs doing, that I don’t stop and really see what is right in front of my eyes.    Take this familiar little dandelion.  It is not so simple, but rather complex. Aren’t they beautiful and the same color as the daffodils.   When I look in the pasture, the mass of yellow looks so bright and happy.

P1010207 double dand

This morning,  I took a good look at them.   I never realized they have a wonderful little circle in the middle as they are blooming.   It’s gone when they are in full bloom, which is when I usually look at them.

P1010208 open dand

And I noticed a lot of rhododendrons starting to bloom.   My bleeding hearts are really opening up and the Daphne in front is starting to open.

The winter plants on the right are still in bloom.   It really does look as though spring is here.    I even went and peeked under the straw where I was sure the peas did not make it (only planted 4 feet of them).   There are a few venturing out of the ground, so will plant more on Sunday.

Today, I retrieved my sewing machine from the “machine hospital”.   Then checked out a new yarn store that I have been wanting to visit.   Lunch out and a few groceries completed the trip.    It’s really difficult to stay in with weather as beautiful as it has been today.

Finished Blue quilt & shopping

P1000714 quilt showing fleece backingI bound the quilt this morning.   I used fleece on the back and omitted a batting.   It is wonderfully cuddly for a new baby.

P1000715 wonder mat

Then it was off to Costco to which I only go about 3-4 times a year because it always does me in financially.  But I was told they had these “Miracle Mats”  for sale and since I purchased some at the state fair two years ago and they really DO trap the dirt at doors, I was wanting some more.   These mats not only trap the dirt, but are very easy to care for as well.  They also have a non slip surface on the back and can be used inside and outside.   Our Great Pyrenees have tested them for us.  Who can resist when they are 30% cheaper at Costco.  So 2 runners and 3 squares came home with me.

P1000718 Helleborus

In addition to the party food for the Superbowl – we are in Seahawks territory, I bought the dogs treats for the next 3-4 months.  And look at the beautiful flowers – new to me.    These Helleborus, “Cinnamon Snow” are winter blooming and shade loving.   What more could I ask for?  We have lots of shade on the north side of the house which is often a plant problem area.

After it was rung up, all I could say was how did that get so high so fast.   His answer:   The rugs! which I knew, but didn’t want to acknowledge.  So that is the story of why I make few trips to Costco.

Fiber Feeding

P1000517 feed

A good deal of time can be spent acquiring good food so that the fiber coming off the animals has quality.    We use organically grown feeds when our pasture is not adequate which is about 4.5  months of the year.   Our pasture starts returning in March.

Half of this feed is for chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys (no, I don’t use them for fiber, but hey, they are excellent at bug control.  And did you know that ducks are also great at worm control. The alpacas goat and sheep get the other half.   Then Sunday I’ll get the feed for the angora rabbits.
