Pillowcases

Children’s hospitals always seem to need more pillowcases.   The children who come in get a new pillowcase that is there very own to keep.   And if they leave and have to come back, they get to choose another pillowcase.    They need thousands every year.   The Sew Expo netted them 5000, since people were asked to bring a pillowcase for the hospital.   If I remember correctly, that was about a third of what they use annual.    The parents who stay at Ronald’s house are each given one as well.

So today, I spent the entire day selecting fabric and cutting it.   I have totally run out of children’s prints.    So there are a few adult ones on the frame.

P1020093

They are cut 27″ by wof of the main fabric, 9″ fabric for the band and a 2″ fabric for trim that goes between the band and the main fabric.    So each case takes a bit over 1 yard.     This is what the cut fabric for 100 cases looks like.   Tomorrow, I will take them down by color into piles.   Then as I can, I will press the fabric and sew it.   I could not afford to do this if I had to buy all this fabric at today’s prices.  I am so glad that I purchased fabric when I could get it at 1/2 – 3/4 off today’s prices.

I will have more  photos to show you when I actually start sewing.

Quilting day

First I want to correct an error 2 days ago.   Gallo Pinto in Costa Rica is black beans and rice.   Pinto beans are used in Mexico

 P1010893 blue blanket

After cleaning a bit outside and contending with Internet Explorer issues,  I finished the corners in this little quilt that had been patiently waiting.

 pink summer blanket

Next I finished the baby blanket that I worked on last week.   I only put flannel in the middle layer and after finishing, I wished that I had used fleece to make it usable a bit longer as it is quite light .    I used some of the sewing machine fancy stitches to quilt it on the diagonals.

P1010894 doll jeans

I hemmed 2 pair of doll jeans and make the casing for the waist.   Now I just need to measure the dolls and put in the elastic.     Some of these projects don’t take long, they just take “getting to them”.

P1010891 I spy

Then I couldn’t help it, I just had to start another project   Earlier this year, in anticipation of this project,  I had ordered a “layer cake” which is several cuts of   10″ square fabric.    There were 40 different prints in this package, but I needed nearly 90.   So I went through scraps, fat quarters, and my larger pieces, hunting for more pieces.   In an “I Spy” quilt, I like every print to be different to make it a bit more challenging.  This is what really took most of the afternoon.  The quilt is now cut out except for the backing and binding AND the cutting table is cleaned off.   There is a lot left to do and I will show you as I put it together.

Multitasking and Doll Hobo bag

The outside gardens have finally been fertilized.  I know I would have more success if I’d get things done in a more timely manner.   It seems other things keep getting in the way.   This is only the second time this year I’ve fertilized, so I’m hoping all the composted manure from last year that we put in the beds is still effective.   This fall we will put in a cover crop as the ground is heavy with clay and perhaps that will help break it up.

I love multitasking.    The clothes were being washed, the beans were cooking while I was finishing the strawberries.   Aw the wonder of  modern conveniences.

I was ready for a break so I made a hobo bag using this pattern  for the dolls.   The instructions are  good with photos to go with it.  They don’t take long so I’m planning on making more of these for Christmas gifts to gift with the dolls.   And to make it even better, the designer will send you the “money” you can print out and put inside.

The counters are clean, the dishes done and the floors are clean from the strawberry marathon.   Supper and relaxing time have arrived.

Quick fleece gift tutorial – scarf, blanket, hats

The Bible says, “the poor you have with you always”     I take this as a call to service.   For me summer is a great time to start on my charity gifts.   By the time cold weather arrives, I usually have an arsenal of small gifts, none of which took me much time.   I also have blankets and quilts, but they take a bit longer.

SCARF  (fleece blankets can be done the same except use 2 yards and just trim the margins off the sides and use a plate to make round corners.

Yesterday’s blanket backing was fleece and left me with scraps.    Buy a 1/4 yard  of fleece in colors for the recipient.   I suggest the dark or team colors for men.   This does not need to be prewashed as it does not shrink.

P1010605

Since the piece was 66″ long and 8+ inches wide on each side, I cut those sides off.

P1010606

Then trimmed them to be 8″

P1010607

Then fringed each end by laying a ruler across the end where I want the fringe to stop and cutting every 1/2″ up to that point.  I do not measure, just eyeball it.  (If the fringed pieces are pulled they will curl).   The fringe is optional.

P1010608

With little time and money you have a quick gift or charity project.   We make these for street people along with fleece hats and in purple for the hospital “shaking babies” program.

 HATS

Average Head Sizes from Martha Stewart

Newborn (6 months and younger)   Circumference: 14 to 17 inches Crown: 8 to 10 inches

Infant (6 to 12 months)    Circumference: 16 to 19 inches Crown: 11 to 12 inches

Child (12 months to 3 years)    Circumference: 18 to 20 inches Crown: 11 to 12 inches

Child (3 years and older)   Circumference: 20 to 22 inches Crown: 13 to 14 inches

Adult Woman   Circumference: 21 to 23 1/2 inches Crown: 13 to 15 inches

Adult Man    Circumference: 22 to 24 1/2 inches Crown: 14 to 16 inches

Using the infant size above I cut 2 hats with the 11 x 16″ measurements

P1010611

Then sewed the long sides together with a 1/4″ seam to make a tube.

P1010612

Sew a seam across the top of the hat

Sew the two points together using a strong thread (for a beginner, this is better done with a needle and thread)

P1010613

Bare heads lose a lot of body heat, so I have not stitched the bottom of the hat.   One can turn it up once or twice or even leave it full length.   For a child, it can be used for a longer time.

P1010614

Today, we have put away 2 scarves and 2 hats for gifts.

P1010615

And because we paid for all the scraps, I want to use them.   So using a bit of satin binding left over from another project and the last usable piece of this fleece, which is 10 x 11.5, I sewed the binding on for the baby to take along when they leave the house (esp in case she is a thumb sucker).   In this way, mom can pin the piece to baby’s clothes and baby has her comfort piece.

P1010616 baby blanket scraps

In case you are concerned about the selvages cut off,   they will become plant ties.

Craftsy

Have you been to Craftsy, yet?   They have a multitude of classes on different topics.  They even have some mini-classes that are free so you can try their classes and see if you like them.    Look here for the list of freebies http://www.craftsy.com/classes/free?_ct=sbqii-wqbbuho-ikrdql&_ctp=free.

I have taken the pizza making one and just now enrolled in the one on knife skills.   I have also signed up for several that have been on sale and still have not finished all those classes, but am working on them.

Once you sign up for one of their classes, you can take it as many times as you want until you master the subject they are teaching.     I’m delighted with these classes as sometimes it takes me seeing something new a few times before I really retain it.     Class subject are on food, gardening, painting, drawing, sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.   I know I missed some, but I think you would enjoy having a look.

April Sew Fun

It seems that the Sew Fun days are coming closer together – but I guess it’s really just that my days are full enough they pass quickly.    Today we were shown some Anita Goodesign products made up

P1010351 anita gooddesign plant markers

Here are some seed packets one might enjoy In the house.

P1010354 anita g silverware holder

And what a great way to have the silverware and napkins ready for each person at a picnic!

The teacher showed us an eyeglass case and then a beautiful baby quilt with Anita Goodesign Nursery rhyme designs.   What was really lovely about this quilt was the rhymes were actually part of the picture.   It made an unusual and beautiful baby quilt.

P1010356 anita g nursery rhymes

The switch was then made to talking about spring clothing of which I don’t have photos.   She had a few Nancy Zieman patterns and told us these patterns had excellent illustrations and are very easy to construct.   She also had some  simple gifts from “Sew Knits with confidence” by Nancy Zieman that were simple with a seam or two and looked quite attractive.

Lemonade is here.

Since our computers are all different, I’m not sure how this will show on your computer, but I thought perhaps you’d like to see how really gray our skies can be.   This was at noon today.   It was so gray, it looked more like near dark.  It made for a  great sewing day after shopping chores were done.

P1010107

Remember the jeans that ended up getting cut off because the pattern caused me grief and I abandoned that idea?

P1010108

I opened the side seam a bit more.   As you can see, it needs enough room to open flat under the machine.

P1010109

Here is the lemonade from that lemon.     They are now long shorts, well just over the knee and will be wonderful for gardening.   I love it when something good happens unexpectedly.  I just have to do the final hemming.

P1010110

And there is a pair for the doll as well, which will go to a child.

As some of you have been reading, there is a neighborhood about an hour  plus from here which slid down the hill.   About half the people who lived there are missing, some found dead, etc.   Everything they had is gone.  I’m hoping there is a girl there who will find comfort in this doll and some clothes.   If not, then there is always a need at Christmas.   I’ll be doing a lot more of this type sewing and if you aren’t already doing things to put aside for someone else, I’d encourage you to start.    Skill level doesn’t matter, caring enough to do something does.    If you don’t enjoy making clothes, how about doll blankets, quilts, etc.   Or how about putting an extra toy in with your purchases from time to time.    Little by little, we don’t see the money go, but it makes a huge difference to the recipient.

Pants for AG doll

Last night I read in Guideposts that “Failure is never a person, it’s only an event”.   As long as we try something, whether it works as planned or not and we learn something from it, we have not failed.   Edison found a lot of ways that a light bulb would not work before he found one that did.    That was my working principle today.

I pulled the tights pattern out of the envelope instead of the pant pattern, without realizing that it contained both.    I then proceeded to embroider the fabric that I cut off my jeans last week.    First side went really well, on the second side, I forgot to reverse the pattern.    No big deal for a doll.

P1010096 Ag pants off doll

I have a several worn pair of jeans here with which to play and try out various ideas.    So I cut out another pair and managed to embroider them upside down – still no big deal, because this pattern looks good upside down as well and it’s for a doll.

P1010095 emb on pants

I finally got them like I want them and now have extra for the dolls I’ll be gifting at Christmas, which means now I need to make some tops to go with these.

P1010097 AG doll pants

And they fit because these are the super stretchy jeans.    I have not sewn up the other pairs yet.    Tomorrow, I’m hoping to get my pants, that this fabric was cut from, embroidered.

I am happy that I persevered and made various mistakes here before I start mine.    I know what mistakes can be made if I get in a hurry and don’t double check.    And on the positive side, I have doll pants made  ahead for Christmas.

Many times things go just as I plan, but other times, I need to remember, that the plan failed, not me.  I shall continue to learn.

A Friend and fencing

Yeah the fence man came and started electrifying the fence.     This is great as the dogs will have more freedom and we will know where they are.   Assuming they don’t get out of the small paddock, the rest of the fence will be worked on next week.

P1010089 greem jacket with prarie pts.

Mary, my friend, came over today and we worked some unfinished projects together.    It’s fun every once in awhile to be able to do things together.   She is so funny, she calls herself the “finisher”   It seems that whenever she comes, I have several unfinished projects and she just takes over and gets them done.  Everyone needs a friend like Mary.   We finished a second doll dress, she mended a coat, and she put a zipper in the sweatshirt instead of the buttons I was going to put in as the buttonholer was refusing to work correctly.

Lemons or lemonade?

Remember the jeans I was embroidering on Sunday.   Today, I tried again and the machine shifted twice throwing the pattern off and making a mess of what I was trying to do.   The pattern takes 2 hr. 20 min for a sew out, and next time I will use a simpler pattern.  The jeans weren’t worth the added hours it would take to remove the bad embroidery as they were only $15 at Costco and that  wasn’t enough money to let ruin my day.    So what to do?

I took them off the machine to the cutting board and will have a new pair of shorts for summer instead of a long pair now.    And I have the other leg to use for making a pair of doll jeans.

Life is short and lemonade sweet
