A pinwheel baby quilt ++

Some days have more interesting things than others and today was a good one.   First I thought you might like to see what we use as insecticide.   These are the baby Bantams you saw two months ago.

Another beautiful iris has opened.

The first broccoli of the season from our garden.   The one was absolutely delicious for lunch and I may have been a little over exuberant on the other and picked it a bit too soon.   But I’m sure it will also be delicious.

I was asked to make a quilt top for a baby girl arriving in July.   When I asked what color, I got no response.  Since she will be flooded with pink, I decided on something a bit different.   What do you think?

For backing, I’ve picked out this fleece.   They are now mounted on the quilting machine.   My thinking was that they will be able to use it with the next baby, even if it is a boy.  Any guesses how long it takes to get back to this project?

I saved the bad news until last.   The coyote came to visit when the dogs were in the house because the neighbor thinks they are noisy at night (coyotes live in his yard)     We now have only two geese left.

Garden and a new block

It’s rather difficult to show you dirt and expect you to see what I’ve planted.    I did get red onion bulbs in which I hope do better than they usually do for me.    Then I planted what may be cauliflower (or broccoli)   I didn’t write it down and at this state the plants don’t look a lot different.   I planted a few of those I had started.  There are more to go in shortly.   Then beet seeds and garlic is at the end of that row.    So one side of one row finished.   And the rains started, which means I go inside.

In the greenhouse I tied up more tomatoes with a few more to go and planted these cute little celery starts which do very good here.

Too soon, it was time to put the animals in and make dinner.   I had enough time to cut these out for the next three blocks on the “Knitter’s Gifts” BOM

Aurofil quilt

Another really fun quilt with each block designed by a different quilter.   Pat Sloan has gathered these designers together and compiled the blocks into a fun, easy Block of the Month.   I decided on a Christmas theme for this one.

And here are the blocks so far.

We’re planning on rain this weekend, so the unfinished garden will just have to wait.   The beds are mostly weeded now and the tomatoes and onion sets have been planted.

BOM from Pat Sloan – Globetrotting

The weather was stunning again today so we put the sunshade over the greenhouse to keep life living and not cooking.   Interesting how work done outside doesn’t show so much, unless it isn’t done and needs to be.   We did get the tomatoes that were set out Sunday fertilized and watered.   They look so happy.   When they grow a bit and get ready to be staked/tied,  I’ll take another photo of them up closer.

I worked for a bit on a the Pat Sloan Globetrotting May BOM.   This photo has all the blocks so far.  May’s block is the one on the right.

Debbie Mumm’s bom

This has been a fun quilt.   In fact so fun, that I got ahead of the game.   Here is the block we are supposed to make.

P1010434 Debbie Mumm May stars of honor

I did make the 4 copies of this block and then because she gave us the picture of  quilt top before we started  and had us cut out all the pieces, I just couldn’t wait to put the alternating blocks together.   So there are blocks missing that will be the July/August block, but you can see where we’re going with this one.

Tell it to the Stars update

Rainy again today – such lovely weather to work on my blocks for the BOM projects.   And that’s exactly what I did.

Judy’s “Tell it to the Stars’ blocks were calling my name.   We do two of the same new block each month.    It is advanced beginner level.  We will find out how they all fit together at the end of the year.   But for now here is May’s block.

P1010432

And here are all the blocks we have done so far

P1010433

I also notice it is May 8 and I have not yet tallied what I finished on my April “to do” list, nor have I put down what is to be done in May.   So I will work on that list for tomorrow.   I enjoy the quilting but have spent more time than I like to think about walking.   I averaged 10,000 steps a day this past week which my fitbit thinks is 4.25 miles/day.    It gets to the point, I can walk in a zombie state.   But walk I will!    So tomorrow I will plan the rest of the month so that I will actually get something done.

On my design wall

The March block of “On grandpa’s pond” was lots of fun.   I enjoyed watching it come to life.     However, I’m really thinking next year, I will collect all the months for a BOM and do it when they are all in.   I like to know how they are all going to fit together before I start and I like any errors in the pattern to be corrected before I begin as well.

P1010425 ducks

Here is how it attaches to the other blocks.  It is still pretty narrow, so without a doubt, there will be more blocks on either side of the fish.

P1010425 ducks added (2)

Tomorrow I will do April’s block and will be caught up on this BOM, I think.   But the sun is supposed to shine, in which case I’ll be outside planting.

Feb blocks for “On Grandpa’s Pond

February’s blocks were a bit more interesting with the “castle”.  I decided I liked the look better with the zigzag around each piece in the color of the piece, so that’s what I’ve done.

P1010407 Feb blocks

And here I’ve placed it beside the January blocks.  It appears the quilt will be building upwards month by month.

Another finish

On our short walk in the park, we noticed these trees.   Is this natural, or were they bent that way?

P1010395 bent trees at park

The second bee box is on each hive.   All those spots on the white are bees, though a bit difficult to see.   It is amazing how wearing the bee suit takes the fear out of working with the bees.  Even though they are swarming all over, knowing I’m not going to be stung gives me confidence.

P1010399 large hive

And yes,  that is me in the bee suit.

P1010400 signed

Do you see the signature embroidered in the binding at the bottom of the photo?

P1010402 bound, signed and finished

The koala quilt is finished – signed and bound!    I gave it a bit of a push to be able to count if in April’s finishes.

Craftsy

Have you been to Craftsy, yet?   They have a multitude of classes on different topics.  They even have some mini-classes that are free so you can try their classes and see if you like them.    Look here for the list of freebies http://www.craftsy.com/classes/free?_ct=sbqii-wqbbuho-ikrdql&_ctp=free.

I have taken the pizza making one and just now enrolled in the one on knife skills.   I have also signed up for several that have been on sale and still have not finished all those classes, but am working on them.

Once you sign up for one of their classes, you can take it as many times as you want until you master the subject they are teaching.     I’m delighted with these classes as sometimes it takes me seeing something new a few times before I really retain it.     Class subject are on food, gardening, painting, drawing, sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.   I know I missed some, but I think you would enjoy having a look.
