Latest squares quilt finished and a run-about

IMG_4428

This quilt is 54 inches square and finished.   It is now in the laundry room waiting to be washed and then will be put in the charity pile.    It seems there are so many requests end of summer that I like to get ahead.

And the dentist and the ophthalmologist are now behind me.   Yes, I get to go back and have a couple small fillings in June, but the eyes are no longer swollen and the eyesight is 20/30 in one eye and reading distance in the other.   So now I’m a happy camper.

And just to have a bit of fun, these two decided to go investigate the neighborhood today.  They got about 1/2 mile away when a neighbor called.  They love the game “catch me if you can”.   But fortunately that doesn’t last too long, and they are ready to get into the car and come home.

Yoga and another quilt

Today we went to the senior yoga class at the nearby gym.  It was supposed to be easy and some of it was.   There were also many of the balance stretches that weren’t so easy for us.   So we decided we will go each Monday until they are easy.  Then we hurried home, had lunch and went to the chiropractor in Bellevue – think 60 minutes each way.

IMG_4419

Even so with good time management today, this quilt is now quilted.   It still needs trimming and a binding, which I can’t find.  That is the strangest thing, because I would think that orange would be easily seen, especially since I used it very recently.

A wintry day and a quilt

IMG_4418

IMG_4417

Now we don’t have Texas type hail, but we had a lot of our little hail today.   In fact, it happened twice, which is the first time I can remember that happening.   You can see the tiny little icicles on both the chair and on the deck behind it.   Just little tiny ice pieces, but it went on and on.   It was enough like winter that I spent some time in the studio, quilting.

This quilt is now quilted.  It still needs trimming, a label and binding.  I am delighted to have it off the machine.  By the end of the week, it should be finished.

IMG_4414

I then started this quilt.  The back is sewn and the quilt is mounted.  However, there was a programming error and I ended up removing all the stitching that I put in.  What takes 10 minutes to put in, will take two hours to remove.   It was very helpful that DH was willing to read some of James Harriot as I picked stitches out.   That was an excellent place to quit for the day.

Knitted gifts is FINISHED

IMG_4367

This quilt measures 64 x 81 and was a block a month by Denise from “just quilting” website.  For the batting I used a fabric often used on mattress  tops in this quilt.  It makes it very heavy and should be very warm for the winter.   I’m donating it to fire victims this next summer (there always are summer fires).

IMG_4369

I decided the best way to quilt this was just to put snowflakes randomly over the top, and they are difficult to see on camera.

Four patches

`IMG_4345

They don’t look like much at this point, but there are 3 seams in each piece and they take time to do.  I have about this many more pulled out to stitch and the drawer will look like this and will fit again.

IMG_4346

Meanwhile the sheep have been having a wonderful time grazing the weeds.

IMG_4343Sheep are interesting in that they take a bite of this and then of something else.   It’s rather like if you eat a bite of carrots, then a bite of potato and continue around the plate.

More unsewing than sewing

IMG_4331

I started to quilt this flimsy because I thought the machine problem was solved.   It is not, the thread refuses to stay between the discs and therefore the horrible mess on the underside..   15 minutes to put it in and two hours (with interruptions) to take it out.  So after removing the stitches, it was  on to better things.

The garden items that are in the ground, plus the blueberries, raspberries, grapes and apple trees all received their dose of fertilizer since it is supposed to rain tonight and then not again until next Tuesday a week away.    Now that they have been fertilized, the rain can water it all in.    I also did the plants in the hoop house and watered that in.   My this all takes a lot of time.   Oh, yes, I also had to get more peat moss as we are trying to improve the soil on the hill.

IMG_4332

I pulled this out today, hoping to get to sew, but such was not the case.    It is a very cute Martha Pullen design for the 18″ dolls and will refresh my heirloom skills.   I intend to take it methodically (read that as slowly), so I don’t have to unsew any of it.      I have the fabric, trims, buttons and elastic and I’m ready to go, when there is some me time.

Circus block #1

IMG_4329This is the first block of 9 monthly installments of Critters at the Circus published by Quilt Magazine.   They are really cute blocks which use mostly scraps.   I will show them to you each month as I complete the applique stitching on each.

IMG_4328

And the applique on the “fish” is completed.   It is now hanging in the “to be quilted” closet, which is way too full.

The sun is still shinning and I found someone to dig and clean out the vegetable beds.   We now have a few peas and potatoes planted and 100 onion bulbs.   The garlic was put in last fall.  So I won’t be putting too much more outside until we are past the frosts.  By then the beds should be ready to plant.

Northwest sunshine

IMG_4324

Another gloriously, beautiful day spent mostly outside.   I mean, when one finally gets the sun, how could one stay inside?   More potatoes have been planted.   These had very long sprouts on them, because it took so long to get enough sun to plant.

IMG_4323

And more work planting starts and soaking the peas.   This may be what I do for the next two weeks.  The sweet potato starts are next to go in the ground. – hopefully Friday.   And it’s already time to start squash and pumpkins.   How does one keep up and do anything else?

IMG_4325

After dark, bit by bit, this is getting  appliqued down.  I just have the black of the eyes to do and then pull off all the paper from the back.

New mattress!

IMG_4297Today the mattresses arrived!   And the weather cooperated with sunshine.   These news beds are so high, yet there is less room under the bed.   Interesting.

IMG_4299

And here is the mattress for the guest room.   I guest it is time to unpack the furniture to make it a welcome room.

IMG_4300

IMG_4301

This box holds a few more bags of pieces, but since the quilts are not yet quilted, I’m not ready to cut the remainder into squares and applique pieces.   If feels like much was accomplished and the floor is still clean.  I can either start new quilts, or tackle all those squares and make more quilts with them.   Such a decision!

I’m praying that each of you who celebrate Easter have a safe and enjoyable family time, remembering the reason for the occasion.

Cleaning

IMG_4289Do you remember these sweet potatoes that I put in water.   Today I was able to take the starts off them and put them in the water.   There are probably 12-15 starts in this jar

IMG_4290

Today, I mopped all the floors upstairs, then we went to our chiropractic appointment and to Whole Foods, where we wandered, looking for new products that didn’t have oil.   Now that is challenging.   We found some Engine 2 crackers and pizza crusts, but not much else.   However, since we were there and I am behind in starting seeds, we picked up some cauliflower, broccoli and other starts – about 1 in all.   Most started cups had about 4 starts in them if I am careful when I transplant.

Every so often, messes get to the point that I can no longer think.  Today, I was at that point.

IMG_4227

No more walking room, so they went on the cutting table and I mopped the studio floor as well.

IMG_4291

I can now walk through the room,

IMG_4292

However, I needed to take care of all these scraps in the boxes.

IMG_4293

Just as these weren’t all created in a day, they will not all get taken care of in a day.   I will leave the larger pieces by color, cut some of the smaller pieces into various squares and leave the strips for a strips quilt someday
