Double star duo plus Christmas

img_0119sThis ufo has seen some activity this week.  I worked on it a bit Christmas and then again today.   So far these pieces are done

img_0120dimg_0121a

img_0130sWith as many pieces as it has, I was happy to get this far.

img_0131as

Then since DH wasn’t up to going to the party yesterday, surprise!  the party came to us.  There were 5 of them who came bearing  gifts and a party atmosphere.    We enjoyed this unexpected treat.   Above is an essential oil diffuser that changes colors and lasts 8 hours.   We will use this quite a bit as we have several oils.  There were a variety of other gifts (that didn’t fit in the same photo)

img_0132sNot pictured: DH got 2 cribbage boards, a tiny one for travel and one for home.  So we had to stop there and try them out.  (much fun)   Plus he received books and other items.  In this photo the center pieces is a plate from Israel, on the right is a pair of massive rubber gloves to protect one when using the fireplace or oven (how did they know).  In the back are some plates for hors d’oeuvers.  The orange pieces in the back are fingerless mitts made from recycled sweaters.   In the forefront left is a cute little purse and behind it a DNA test form telling us the kit is coming.  The blue Doxie is actually a cute little pen.    All items were totally unexpected and appreciated.    Now it is on to preparing for the New Year which is so close.  I need to finish my planning calendar so I can get more done.

Productive day in the studio

img_0119This photo is to show you how many pieces there are in this 32″ square wall quilt.   The  inside star area should measure about 24″ square before the borders.   Little Bits “Double star Duo is a paper pieced pattern by Cindi Edgerton with a print date of 2003 on the instructions.   So that may be how long it has been floating around here.   It is possible I purchased this to learn paper piecing.   Truly, I don’t remember even having it until I found it in the box last week.

img_0120

img_0121

img_0124I had started cutting a few of the pieces out before it became a ufo and today finished cutting the ones for these sections.  I saved the section with the most pieces for next sewing episode because I wanted to see some progress.   So next time, I’ll cut the pieces for that and sew them together.   It would be lovely to finish the top and get it to a hanger to wait for the quilting machine repair.

img_0123

img_0122

These are the tissue patterns for these pieces.   The one on the left I still have to cut and sew.   I would not even want to attempt these tiny pieces without these patterns, however with the tissue patterns, it has been a fun and easy project.  I’ll make the borders big enough this will be a nice 36″ baby quilt.     It has been a good, productive day in the sewing room.

Honu quilt is hanging!

img_0102a

The Honu quilt is now hanging in the family room!   Yes.  it is up on the wall.   I sewed eyes on the turtles and it really made a huge difference in how cute it is.   I thought it cute before, but this is even better.   Thanks Lisa, for insisting on the eyes.img_0103a

Then I opened the little quilt package from Sanibel beach that I found in one of the boxes.    I’m not sure what happened.  It is supposed to become 7 x 8, but when following their directions it is 10 x 12″ which is fine by me.

img_0113aThis technique is interesting because they want you to bunch, pleat, whatever to get the white fabric to look like sand, very uneven, with bumps etc.   Now I get to hand sew all the little fish, shells and whatever else is in the package.   Oh, yes and sew the binding to the back.

It’s been a busy day, catching up on animal chores, trying to find homes for various items around here that somehow show up.  And we spent some time figuring out how to put the new attachments on the quilting machine.   I’ve had the attachments for 3 months, but until today, did not take the time to read through the instructions.   And the new pieces were not that easy to attach.

Remember last week when I said I made a list of every project in the boxes and had photos to go with so I could immediately know what is in them?  Well, that was last week, and when I finish this, I’ll go hunting, because I do not know to where those papers ran.

Boxes hiding in plain sight

img_0028sThese are the boxes hiding in plain sight – right under the serger table and there is also one under the sewing machine table.  I put projects that I’m going to do in the immediate future in these boxes.   The only problem is they don’t get looked through, hence, the project doesn’t get finished.

Box 1 contained

  1. This valentine heart that I was going to make for my mil, but she didn’t live long enough.img_0030s

  2. Seattle streets quilt started, but not much is done.img_0031s

  3. A dressy shirt with net sleeves.   That won’t happen anytime soon, and wasn’t started, nor was fabric pulled for it.  So I put the magazine back on the book shelf.

  4. A bag with several tiny quilt patterns which go together and make one larger piece.   Fabric and patterns are there.img_0035simg_0039s

5.   32″ square “double stars duo quilt which appears cut out.

img_0034wimg_0038x6

6.  Fabric and pattern for a Lone star quiltimg_0040ss

  1. 7. Extra fabric and pattern for a small wall hanging “Baby Honu”img_0041x

Box 2

This box contained Ziplocs of fabric scraps from quilts made and mostly donated, so no need to keep them separate.  They went into the scrap box which is also overflowing and needs attention. There was one Ziploc I kept separate because I don’t understand how it came to be.  There are many green triangles cut out – obviously for something.   So that box has been eliminated.  I’m saving Box 3 for tomorrow.

The blocks quilt, a promise kept

img_0062I promised this little blocks quilt last night, that today was its finishing day  I kept my promise and it is finished including the hanging sleeve on the back.  I think it will get to hang either in the living room until I make something else I want to hang there.

img_0027sDH and I have been reading and watching videos that were recommended to us for his symptoms.   We decided to try the juice fasting program for 21 days first to see if we would get any results (we are both doing it).   This was our third day and so far, other than less thinking about what to fix, I haven’t noticed any difference.  But that really isn’t very long, so we will keep at it.   But the carrots in the garden are going at a fast rate.  I may have to buy some for the last week and I had a LOT of carrots in the garden.  I used a quarter of the pumpkin in the morning drink as well.   Who would have thought to eat raw pumpkin other than the sheep.   I will keep you informed if this makes us feel any different.

Tomorrow doesn’t come often

img_0026sTomorrow doesn’t often come, but for this little quilt which has been folded up in a bag for years and then hanging on the board for weeks, tomorrow came.  I quilted and trimmed it today.   Tomorrow, I’ll look and see if I can find any of the fabrics left from this and bind it.    And while I’m at it tomorrow, I will be doing more straightening in the sewing room.

img_0025a

This was a class project and small – only 29″ x 33″ – and since it will be a wall quilt, it doesn’t need a lot of quilting, so I kept it very simple.   Tomorrow, little quilt is your day to be bound washed, and hung.

Baby Honu is almost finished

img_0017s

Baby Honu is finished and ready to hang! – well almost, as it still needs beaded eyes and to be washed.   This pattern is by Lisa Boyer, who gave me just a bit of a push yesterday, saying she hoped I’d  finish it – no pressure.   I purchased it as a kit on Kauai when we were there one rainy day, as it was really difficult to drive by the quilt store and not go in, especially when they have a “husband bench” out front.

img_0019s

I used a very simple pattern to quilt this as I wanted the turtles to shine and also, I had a hard time quilting what looked like waves.

img_0020s

img_0016s

There is now a hanging sleeve and a label on the back.   I did not know Lisa reads my blog and was as surprised to hear from her yesterday as she was to see this quilt on the blog.   She has graciously allowed me to show you her quilts that she made while making the pattern.  Thank you, Lisa.   And of course now, I must make a table runner as that is also very cute.  She said she made a baby blanket of which she doesn’t have a photo.  These are just such cute turtles!  Please go look at her site and see other cute patterns (www.lisaboyer.com)

Hono quilt?

img_0013

This “Hono”, meaning turtle, quilt was started many years ago, after a Hawaiian trip.   I purchased the kit there, came home and made it up right away.   Because I didn’t know much about the actual quilting at that time, I sewed all those little stuffed turtles on, then had to take them all back off again so it could be quilted.   So it has hung for all this time waiting and waiting.    “Hono” needs to be done and hung so we can enjoy it and remember the fantastic times we had in Hawaii.   So I put it on the quilting machine, but didn’t like the quilting, then picked the quilting back out.   It is now quilted with a pattern I can live with, and the little turtles have been sewn back on.   It still needs a binding, label, hanging sleeve and little bead eyes for the turtle.   It has taken several years to get this far, but it is closer to being done than it was a month ago.    This is one of those projects that “done is better than perfect”

The list (I really should have hibernated) isn’t finished yet.   Today the (5) electric entrance gate is not functioning.   And the (6) GeekSquad has had control of my computer for the last 4 hours as the printer wasn’t working and since they started a defrag, it could be the rest of tonight.   Maybe this is a new game of “12 days of Christmas”.   If so, we’re halfway through the list.  So shall I get up tomorrow or hibernate?

Rain – canning – internet buying

img_5704mAll this rain has given me time to work in the kitchen.   Between last night (cooked beans) and today, I have cooked and canned 4 dozen pints of beans.   It is wonderful to be able to just open a can of beans and heat them or not to add to a meal.   I still want to can another 3 dozen pints of beans and energy permitting, some potatoes.  Potato soup is so tasty when it’s cold outside.  I could do more if I had another pressure cooker, but then I’d have more to store.   It takes about half an hour to heat up, 75 minutes to process and another half hour to remove the pressure, so there is a lot of time in each kettle full.   And most of the time, we are very close by so that we can keep the temperature and pressure where it should be.

img_5706d

Today, I also rescued from the refrigerator a number of red and orange peppers which I cut up and froze.   And yes, I pushed the date just a bit on both items.   It is nearly the 12th month!  And I like to know when I processed them so I can use the older items first.

I also had a bit of time, so I removed all the stitches from the quilt that I felt needed to be removed.   I’m very happy that is not a huge quilt.  Now to start again on the quilting.

img_5705nThis package arrived – wonder how that happened.  There are now 27 wash clothes waiting to be made.  Or maybe these will turn into something else.  This is the problem with internet.   It is too easy to spend money.   No, it wasn’t necessary, but the price was right and I can use it for small, easy projects.   I did manage to ignore most of the weekend ads.   However, I ran out of empty pint jars and went to buy some, when what to my wondering eyes, one of my enabling friends posted that Target was having a sale on Ball jars.    I did order what I needed and will pick them up at the store tomorrow.   I also need some ink for my printer, but that is not on sale this weekend.  Therefore, I have not purchased that, yet.   So really I have done very good at ignoring all those temptations that have been flowing into my email box.   The ads will be coming in for awhile yet, so I still have to be careful.    How about you?   What tempted you that you yielded to?
